Honestly, for the people who were complaining about NSMBWii and NSMB2 earlier, I can't see why this game is suddenly great. It's not doing anything they didn't, as far as I can see.
I'm not saying that's a bad thing, I'm totally looking forward to this one. I just don't see why the people who hated the last two are suddenly excited by this one.

NSMBU has more efforts put into it compared to NSMB2, I guess. At least it has some of its music renewed and more details are put into the backgrounds. Small changes like these do reflect how much effort are being put into the game.

I'm not sure 'most' of us where pissed about this one at any point. Its a HD 2D Mario and means we get a new Mario game at launch for the first time in yonks. Who could hate? Idiots, maybe. Honestly I always expected HD 2D Mario to look more like this. An absolutely gorgeous game. This is nice. Looks like fun. Not bad. But I'm still waiting for the next EPIC Mario game. What's "EPIC"? This is EPIC! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm4HD-EgMQ8

I can't work out where the platforms are supposed to be, and that doesn't bode well for a precision platformer like Mario. Pretty, artsy stuff isn't always necessary, and in fact can sometimes be a hinderance. And yeah, Galaxy was epic, sure, but NSMBU was never trying to sell itself as the new Galaxy, was it? If Nintendo reveal a new Star Fox or something you fools want next week, I'm not going to complain that its not a new Mario Galaxy or some other actually good game, because its not supposed to be.

Honestly I always expected HD 2D Mario to look more like this. An absolutely gorgeous game. Honestly, I think what we're getting is a lot more gorgeous than that painting. This is gorgeous scenery. The painting is okay, but way too brown for my taste. Having a game look like that would kind of defeat the point of it being HD, too... Ain't a thing HD about that picture.

A better point of comparison would be to compare to other sidescrolling "2.5D" HD platformers. The closest I can think of would have to be Trine 2: Directors Cut (which is coming out for Wii U) (Would have embeded them, but the probably look better when seen enlarged on youtube). www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU4iahUtTgswww.youtube.com/watch?v=S7RU7FbriKULook at all the foreground objects, background objects (they even cast shodows) and the further stuff in the background detail. And even things like liquid motion effects of water and lava.

Wow look at that game! Now that is visually impressive. When will Mario have that kind of detail? Yeah I posted that picture not for level layout reasons but for detail reasons.
I want grass to look like grass, and not plastic. I want that giant tree in the background to look like wood, and not plastic. I want those rocks to look like rock, and not plastic.
Everything looks like plastic. Sorry, when you got HD Mario I want something beautiful.
This doesn't mean it's not going to be a great game... after all visuals have nothing to do with gameplay. But it would still be nice.

DiU is right on the money. Adding more characters and other artsy things doesn't always do more favors for a video game. And if you have too many of those, then it does get kinda difficult to put them all down as a game.
EDIT: Moved to the "Miyamoto on F-Zero" thread.

Jesus I was just talking about having better textures and details. What was THAT all about?

It wasn't directed at your post, just what he mentioned about gameplay.

Everything looks like plastic. Sorry, when you got HD Mario I want something beautiful. What the hell kind of plastic are you used to? The grass and leaves look like felt. So if I'm understanding you right here, essentially, you're wanting a Mario game where the textures are photorealistic? Where the grass, trees, rocks, etc. all look real? If that is what you're saying (and I can't really see an alternative) then I'm sorry to have to say this, but I hate you. And everything you stand for. The absolute very last thing that video games need right now is more of that shit.

Yeah Koopaul, it's not necessary for a series like Mario. The basic look of the environments as we see in NSMBU is what gives Mario platformers their charm.
You want photorealistic graphics from Nintendo? Then that's what fucking Pikmin is for! Duh!

I didn't say I wanted photo-realistic. Look at Galaxy for example, that's not photo-realistic and yet... well look at it: Look at that water, that wood, that grass. Why can't they have that in the NSMB games? That's all I ask. Is that so bad?

Second screen: This is inherently common with several game trailers compared to the final product.
Do you notice this with many early trailers? They are so well presented, stunning visuals and everything. But when it all comes down to the final product, all of that gets boilied down because of issues like disc space and the like.
This reminds me of Whispy Woods in one of Super Smash Bros. Melee's stages where early builds of the game had his leaves designed so realistically, but in the final game...

True, but my point still stands. Galaxy still has better details. That's a Mario game.
So what's so wrong about that?
