I noticed that they haven't used the "Revolution" name on any of the hardware today. OoooOooo... Maybe they will change the name to Gamewand or something... Oh Christ, I hope not.
Newguy, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Plain and simple - I like this a lot. FINALLY, we get something DIFFERENT. ;D
To level with you all, I must say that lately I have been getting slightly bored with the standard type of gameplay and control - it's good, but it is quickly becoming a thing of recycling old ideas, or just tweaking them slightly to make things appear new-ish. For a while I've been hoping that the new controller would be unlike ANYTHING else on the market - I never expected this!
This new controller could potentially redefine not only HOW I play games, but the TYPE of games I play - I think this has HUGE potential if executed correctly. It could emulate the feeling of playing games for the first time again! ;D

After thinking about this, I've realised something - everyone is saying this will be great for FPS, RTS and Point & Click adventure games especially... which is pretty much what they said about the DS, and we have, what, 1 of each of those genres on the DS now (or coming fairly soon)? What we have seen, however, aside from 'normal' games that don't or barely use the DS's functions (aside from Wi-Fi), are new styled games - drawing games (Yoshi Touch & Go, Kirby Canvas Curse) and games that really fit in a genre (Electroplankton and Nintendogs)... so, is that what we are going to see with the Rev? While creating new genres and series is all well and good, I'm not ready to give up my old ones yet. And while the "shell" helps to get rid of that worry, am I really going to need to shell out (get it?) for 4 of those as well in order to play some old-styled games?
I'm sure Nintendo have thought of all this, and I'm sure they will create games that I'll be able to play with people like my mother (hell, maybe even my dog), which I suppose is a 'revolution'.
Viva la Revolution!

I recommend you go and listen to Iwata's keynote speech in full (around 50 minutes long, mind). There he explains Nintendo's strategy in full, from Famicom Mini up to the Revolution itself. It seems he is deadly serious about not only adopting non-gamers and ex-gamers (expanding the market, which is what much of the talk is about), but making sure that todays gamers don't become the next generation of ex-gamers by not being catered for by Nintendo. He gives no real details on this, but he explains how all multiformat games will be playable using the Revolution controls, how existing genres are vital for keeping the current generation of gamers happy, but how making these current genres "feel" new is just as important as making brand new kinds of game. I am hoping New Mario (128), or whatever they are calling it at the moment, will be an action/platformer title in the vein of others. I hope Zelda will remain a dungeon-crawling action title. But I also hope Nintendo does create brand new games as well. As for the DS... take a look at Another Code. It's a PC style adventure game made using a mouselike input. It has a few FPS games already (Tom Clancy, Goldeneye, and First Hunt), and several platform games. But you just have to remember that the first year's software releases are usually experimental on all formats - with a few nifty surprises. In case you haven't noticed... I'm completely sold on the idea now as well

After posting that I realised how cool Kirby Canvas Curse would be on the Rev. Then I was pretty much sold. But in case I wasn't, I decided to emulate playing Mario Tennis with a sideways GCN controller and a TV remote.... and then I was definately sold. I probably looked like a tool, but it felt awesome - I wouldn't just be pushing A or B to make Mario swing his racket, I'll be angling my remote / baton / wand / pointer / free-hand controller in the right ways to do it. And thats just so awesome. Unfortunately I have a craptacular dial-up, so I can't listen to the speech - anywhere to read it? EDIT: Check this out: img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/mousedown/revo.swfMade me laugh, at least.

Heh, DiU and Flamedude... people out there work pretty damn quick when a major announcement is made. I've been reading through a number of discussion forums about the Revolution and I'm surprised how positive everyone is being about it. Well, maybe not everyone... but most people seem to start with the impression that it's just a one-handed remote control. Then they read about the motion sensor and the demo ideas provided and just about everyone gets a bit excited by the possibilities. The best step now would be for Nintendo to show off some games before the end of the year, so people can actually stop letting their minds run away with them. Hey, but perhaps they're just waiting for Microsoft and Sony to show off some ACTUAL screenshots of their next gen consoles... if the recent X-Box 360 screenshot is anything to go by then perhaps Nintendo have little to worry about in that area anyway. Come ooooon WarioWare: Revolution!!

About the screenshot thing: That's how SM64DS disappoints. It shows screenshots of, say, the 4 characters meeting Bowser in a room, which seems to be they'll be fighting Bowser. But here's the actual thing: There are no 4-player simultaneous play other than the crappy VS mode!!!
So basically I don't trust anything until the actual thing is out. Up until now, actually the only thing that I trust in will be: "Nintendo is working on a console codenamed Revolution" - but the shape, the controller, even the games aren't finalised, right?
(Actually I hope the controller will not be seperated in the final design (I hope to see the plugin tightly attached onto the controller, not as a seperate part) - that's somehow terrible.)

Right, so I am a massive massive massive Halo fan and over at the Bungie forums in the Random Trash Forum (aka The Flood) there have been a few discussions about the Rev controller.
Comments range from fairly made to downright infuriating;
"They really screwed up this time, their controller has to be the dumbest f**king controller I have ever seen in my entire life. That is going to be sooooooo ridiculously stupid. What are your thoughts?"
This makes my blood boil. The thing about narrowminded people is they cant see outside of their narrow perspective. The blinkers are on.
Other comments on Bungie are more optimistic. One particular thread in which users argue for and against the new controller was ultimately blown the hell up by Shishka, a Bungie (and hence Microsoft) employee. After he added a few comments it was clear he was getting pissed the fuck off by comments ending with;
"Well, the best argument I've seen AGAINST the Revolution in this thread so far has been "Nintendo will fail because movement is dorky."
So I'm fairly sure that people would have hated it regardless, most likely because they chose to hate it before they knew anything about it."
finally ending with a few pages later;
"That's so completely untrue that my jaw dropped.
Imagine a survival horror where, as you moved your right hand, the character moved to point their flashlight.
Imagine a first person game set in feudal Japan, where YOU controlled the movement of your character's katana. Cutting the air in particular symbols unleashes powerful attacks.
Imagine a side scroller like Abuse, where you control movement with the d-pad, but aim your weapon by the direction you move your controller.
Imagine a party game with a billion little mini games all related to movement and timing.
Frankly, the very IDEA of the controller has an absurd potential to it. You'd have to be fairly unimaginative to say "It's only good for one thing.""
At yet despite this comment by one of the creators of the game that spurred the forum where the discussion was taking place it didnt take long for blind stupidity to rear its head again.
Seriously, some people make me so mad i just want everyone to die.
Someone set us up the bomb!!

I'll admit, the promo video with people waving and leaping all over the place gives the impression that it's a bit stupid. But when you read how it picks up on the slightest wrist movements, making it no more excrutiating than moving a computer mouse, you realise you could really slob out with it... which is how videogames should be.

Let's get one thing straight, the 'revolutionary' revolution controller is nothing but a gloryfied remote control... I'd prefer an updated GC controller but it's ok I guess..BUT there's NO ANALOGUE STICK!! How am I supposed to play games with no analogue stick?! Having a stupid and primitive D-pad instead is taking a step back in time not forward.

And second there's TWO different attachments we know of that both have them. Move Zig! For great justice!

Hold on. You hold the remote control-like control like a remote control. So only one finger will do the playing? How are we going to play Smash bros.? Exclusives are great, but will there be any multi-platform games?
I'm sorry guys, but I'm disappointed with this control. I convinced myself to like that other design that was posted up a couple months back, that was confirmed to be fake, and I was even hyped up about it. But a control that is just like those "gaming controls" on airplanes just doesn't appeal to me. My hand is too big to play those airplane games. I do hope that this is not the final design, and that the control with the analogue stick is not connected by a wire.

If you look at the latest screenshots of the revolution the "REVOLUTION" logo has been replaced by the standard Nintendo logo. Also in the keynote speech that JAP FELLA referred to the new console as "codename Revolution" and not "Revolution" directly. Right. "Revolution" is still only a code name, which begs the question: Won't Revolution Europe have to change its name again once the official name is revealed? Oh, and back on topic, the Rev controller looks cool to me!
