Way too many you say? Recall your idea of having the partys split up, and Tei's idea of having different parties based on their themes. Same principal here. The party constantly changes as you progress through the game. You actually won't have every single character at your disposal until the very end.
Another thing that pissed people off about NXC is that some characters were glued together even though they would've been better as one, and you didn't even have the ability to customize your own pairs. In my idea, the characters come in pre-made sub-parties, and at certain points in the game, you have the option to customize the whole army to your liking.
Storywise, I was pondering if there should maybe be parts where you don't play as The Hero, but any of the sub-groups fighting their own battles. There'd be a bunch of separate yet intertwined plotlines that eventually come to a head. Or perhaps, you'd only know what each group of characters is doing when you meet them and won't find out the whole thing until later on.

OK, sorry for the double post (again) but I've been pondering the character set-up (again) and have opted to cut a few characters and add in different ones. I took out Harry, Muddy, Ike, Olimar, and the Marvelous guys, and added Sky Skipper and Red (with Pikachu)
..and now for something completely different. Or maybe not. I've gotten to working on the different factions the characters will be split into. Here's how it works, the groups of characters, which vary from 2-5, join your party and leave you party at different points in the story. Whenever more than one group of characters is with you, you can customize the party's setup to your liking. So basically, the party constantly changes. There are also some characters that won't join your party permanently unless you fulfill specific requirements.
I decided on this to rectify yet another one of NXC's problems, which was a lot of characters, but not enough importance. You basically have all these characters, but some of them are stuck as two in one unit, and you can't make your own pairs. That limits the character's importance and the player's freedom. Not in my idea! (Unless you count the few instances where I was forced to make a 2-in-1 character due to lack of moveset potential.)
Faction 1 -Mario -Meta Knight
Faction 2 -Donkey Kong -Diddy Kong -Dixie Kong & Kiddy Kong
Faction 3 -Stanley -Sky Skipper -Foreman Spike
Faction 4 -Tamagon -Gokuu -Donbe & Hikari
Faction 5 -Bubbles -Balloon Fighter -Ice Climber -Mach Rider
Faction 6 -Takamaru -Pit -Prince Richard
Faction 7 -Luigi -Peach
Faction 8 -Little Mac -Sukapon
Faction 9 -Marth -Alm -Sigurd -Leaf -Roy
Faction 9 -Yoshi -Lip
Faction 10 -Wario -King DeDeDe
Faction 11 -Wild Gunman -Mr.Stevenson -Micheal Jones
Faction 12 -Link -Zelda
Faction 13 -Captain Falcon -Ness -Flint
Faction 14 -Fox McCloud -Falco Lombardi
Faction 15 -Mike Anderson -Hakkun
Faction 16 -Red & Pikachu -Pearl
Faction 17 -Ray-01 -Demieru -Starfy -Jill
Faction 18 -Andy -Sami -Max
Solitary Characters (Meaning they're not part of a faction) -Kirby -Samus -Mr.Game & Watch -The Hero -The Princess
Some of you might be wierded out by the teams I've come up with, but I assure you, it's all for the purpose of the story. Like Wario and KingDeDeDe deciding to team up to get whatever the Dark Alliance is after and split it 50-50, or Mario and Meta Knight...oops. I ain't gonna spoil it here. You'll have to wait for that...

In all honesty, some could be cut. Tamagon should get the boot due to the US/Europe thing. I know it's a dream, but still.

You took out Muddy!? Shame on you!

I actually decided to make Muddy a summon, along with other favorites such as Tingle. ;D
Oh, and for the record, the Tamagon thing has no basis. I have about 5-6 other characters up there that were confined to one region.
In other news, I'm still working on the plot. Here's what I've come up with so far, and I apologize if some parts sound like you've already heard them:
It all starts when our Hero is playing the Wii, when suddenly a Warp Zone opens up and sucks him in. He finds himself stranded in the Lylat System, then gets attacked by Star Wolf. Things get hectic until Fox and Falco arrive and help him. Star Wolf retreats, but Wolf lets the Hero off with some sort of warning. After the Hero realizes where he is, another Warp Zone opens up and out come Stanley, Sky Skipper and Foreman Spike. Apparently they came from another part of the universe and somehow ended up there.
Once everyone gets acquainted with one another, they decide to search for another Warp Zone to see if they can return everyone to where the Hero to where he belongs. At this point the party must go on a small journey through the Lylat System to find the Warp Zone.
That's all I have for now. It kinda serves as a sort of prologue.

Summons? This is a tactical RPG. No summons here. I really think you need to re think some of the ideas. Some of those characters are s os SO obscured they definatly don't need to be on the list and would only interest us.

Oops. Forgot that Strat RPGs don't have summons. My mistake.
As for the characters, would you mind telling me exactly which ones you think are too obscure?

I don't think obscure characters are a bad thing. After all, aren't Popo and Nana obscure characters?

I meant to say that myself, but I forgot. Thanks for backing me up. I'm kinda starting to reconsider the teams I made. Some of them are kinda hard to fit into a good-sounding story with the way I set them up. I'm also kicking myself for having so many two-characters factions.

59. The Hero (I was thinking of naming him Mark "Fry" Kelly, after our God the site's creator) Hey! That was my idea. Although, I just used his first name. At one point I did consider having two other original characters name Steven and Kelly. So...anyone have anything to say about what I've written so far?

Alright, but it should be noted that I keep visualizing the characters drawn in your style, Fry. It's very fitting for this situation.

Oops. Forgot that Strat RPGs don't have summons. My mistake. As for the characters, would you mind telling me exactly which ones you think are too obscure? Actually, you can summon in tactical RPGs. Are we talking like... FF Tactics? Because you could summon in those games and they worked basically like area targeting spells. The character would go through a cool animation, do their thing, and leave. If you're talking about having them enter the fray as a one-battle-only character, then I don't see how that's an issue either... EDIT: Oh yeah... HEY GUYS! I went on a hiatus because I, well, wasn't posting here much anymore, but I'll try and do more--don't worry

We missed you I was thinking up a bit more for my game. Only one big thing. Using Kirbychu's four action things, each character has four basic actions they can do(Mario:Hammer, Cape, Jump, Fireball). Well, poor old Kirby has only one. However, by copying enimies, he can learn new ones, and add an additional three. Also, I wanted to ask, besides Ness, which Earthbound character do you think would be best. I was think Flint myself.
