Fliptroopa,
I agree with you that the spirit of the game is pulling characters from all corners of the Nintendo universe together (and now to a lesser extent the gaming universe), and serving up both nostalgia and a history lesson in addition to the gameplay, but that is exactly why I'm concerned with people saying so-and-so is likely to be cut. I think most of the characters in the game right now deserve to be there, as they ARE parts of Nintendo history. And to say that G&W or Sheik- the two characters I saw mentioned as possible or probable cuts- aren't unique or suitable for the game, but merely popular, I think is just plain wrong.
You seem to take issue with me saying that the game is about fan service, but maybe you underestimate just how much "fan service" and "the spirit of the game" line up. In SSB, the only character who wouldn't have been a fan pick was Ness, in Melee they added G&W and Ice Climbers (plus Roy, who I would say was the only one who WAS outside of the spirit of the game, and more in the spirit of marketing the new FE.) Pit, Meta-Knight and Wario were probably 3 of the 5 most suggested characters for Brawl (along with Diddy Kong and Sonic), and here they are. They are certainly in the spirit of the game.
I still hope they include someone like Balloon Fighter and then totally throw us for a loop with someone like Wild Gunman, neither of whom would top most fan's lists, but are certainly unique, suitable, and historical enough for the game. But the majority of the characters who are going to have the requisite nostalgia and history are going to be the major star-power characters, and those are the characters who top most-wanted lists. Why do you think the game is so damn popular?

Sorry if I tend to be a little argumentative; thats the nature of the internet I suppose. I want to mention that I've been viewing this site for a couple years probably, and occasionally lurking in the forums as well, and I can say that it is by FAR the most complete site of its kind out there. Kudos to FryGuy.

I just have to say, if they remove Game and Watch, I'll be the very first to shed a tear.
he might not be a useful character, but I'll be damned if he isn't DELIGHTFUL.

amazingeee, I totally see what you're saying, and frankly, I think our two arguments can compliment one another. I was really trying to target that group of people who think that the roster will be completed with the entire cast of Zelda or what have you. I agree totally that characters like Pit, Wario, Sheik, etc. are not only popular but unique and colorful enough to keep the game alive as it was intended. But I also feel that characters like Tingle, Skull Kid, Shadow Mario, Boo, etc. etc. are not in the same vein, as they would break down as either clones or basically a waste of space. When Sakurai mentioned that he was taking only the unique and suitable ideas, I think what the translates as, for us, is we will be seeing the Links and the Marios, and into their games only so far is it isn't obnoxious, but then we get surprises, like Pit and Snake and the Ice Climbers. People asked for these characters, but if you look, they do not have the support that, for example, Wolf O'Donnell does. It's pretty amazing what people want and what actually gets in the game. Like you said, nobody would have asked for Ness except for the 3 people in the West who actually played Earthbound (its popularity in Japan not withstanding ). And so, yeah, I'm on the same page as you, I'd like to think. You can agree that you would be upset if they filled the roster with like 8 Zelda characters and only 2 old school, right? There needs to be a balance for it to work. And that was part of the argument against the clone characters, really. There's reasoning behind it, but wouldn't it be annoying if that scenario happened? You unlock everybody, and it's just a bunch of clones? I honestly don't think they will cut many characters, maybe only 1, but the clones will definitely be changed to be more original. Good to run into other Nintendo fans who think as deeply about the subject as I do! Welcome to the forums! ;D ;D

First thing about changing the clones. I doubt it will happen. Masahiro Sakurai has been asked by many ppl to not change any characters
As far as new characters I do think Ballon Fighter has a chance. Sakurai said he was going to put more classic characters in it and since Ballon Fighter was planned for I beleve he has a good chance.
I also think Tingle has a chance since there giving Japan a voice, and Japan loves Tingle. Im hoping Diddy Kong gets in as well. I think he might but Im not to sure. But man does the Donkey Kong franchise needs another represenative.
He says production is going well and Metaknight and Pit are atleast 50% done. Still, I fear we'll have to wait until holiday season of next year tyo get this game. If it comes out between March-July I'll be very happy; however, you cant rush perfection.

Update:OK,nevermind its different looking enough from the Champa flag...darn...I thought it could be a Golden Sun stage, and thus, charcaters=P

Doubt it was from Golden Sun. No place in that game looked like that.

The fact that they battle atop and then in the same castle makes me wonder if this game adds "destructable levels" ala Clayfighter or Dead or Alive, with multiple levels to them. For example, say you're fighting on Rainbow Ride. You smash the crap out of the other guy, and end up slamming him into the cabin doors of the ship. The action focuses now on the cabin, and you can enter and begin fighting inside instead of atop the ship. Cool, eh? Or a more imaginable example: you hit somebody into the side of the temple walls on Hyrule Temple, and you both fly through into the Hyrule Dungeon area I would enjoy one or two levels like that, definitely, but the whole game can't be like that

I'm not so sure about 8 player matches, as I think that would make things too frantic.

Gah. My computer can't display Japanese text, so I can't copy and paste a translation from Google. Anyone know how to update my PC so it can read Japanese symbols?
I think they should make the clones original. Maybe if there is that much support for the clones they could release a downloadable pack with them in it or something.
Here's an idea for an old character that could become a new character:
Wind Waker Link
B = Deku Leaf If in the air, Link pulls it out over his head and gently floats down to the ground, but if on the ground, shoots a gust of wind in the direction you're facing.
B^ = Ballad of Gales Link dissapears into a miniture tornado, and teleports a metre above.
Bv = Bomb Throws a bomb, that explodes faster and goes further than the original bomb.
