This is like choosing between Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros. IS the hit & run concept at his purest, every sprite of each stage is in the place it should be. Super Mario Bros. 3 IS the perfect expansion. More items, more stages, more worlds, all in balance.
However, I don't think I could've played SSB64 5 years as I did (and I keep doing) with Melee. More content = more time to spend unveiling the game = more fun. The average graphics made SSB64's physics and animations clunky. Melee's speed is right for me, but I can understand why people prefer SSB64, because is clearly more friendly. Melee takes a lot of time to master and to get used to the speed.
SSB64 was more like an experiment, minimalistic game. Melee was an epic, one of the most polished games with a sick attention to detail I've ever seen. And one of the best games ever. Everytime I play I keep improving and noticing new things.

More content = more time to spend unveiling the game = more fun. That reminds me of another reason I prefer Melee over the original. You can unlock almost everything there is to get in SSB64 in a sitting--Ness is about the hardest thing to get in the game, but after a few days' playing a smasher could unlock him no problem. Melee kept at least a handful of characters at more than an arms' length away--Mewtwo and Mr. Game & Watch specifically. You really had to work to unlock them and it took me and my friends upwards of a few weeks to get everyone and all the levels. That kind of longevity really made it fun.

I hope unlocking Mewtwo next time isn't as insane as it was before (unless he's a startup character).
Also, the pipes in Mushroom Kingdom were accessible in SSB. Why weren't they in SSBM? DX

They need to make the POW Block from that stage into a full-fledged item.

That would be me. The gameplay was good in SSB but the content in melee was cool.

SSB. I like the controls more, plus I dislike the fact that there are alot of japanese only characters. Infact I once knew a kid that had a crush on marth, due to the fact that we all thought he was a girl, because Marth had never been in an american fire emblem.

How can you have a crush on a fictional character without boobs and a somewhat masculine voice?

How can you have a crush on a fictional character without boobs and a somewhat masculine voice? We were in elementary school, and I didn't crush on him mind you. But we all thought he was female due to the fact that we were retarted and mistook the Muscle as breats, then we ignored the voice.

But that's a mancrush. He actually thought the male character in question was female, which bizarre since the character had no female qualities.

To be fair, Marth does look like a big girl. He's wearing a skirt, his name, face and hair are androgenous, and that hair is held up by what appears to be a girly hairband. ;D
Which is why, if you have your eye on a particular someone, you should always follow them around for a few weeks, watching their every move, until you're 100% sure there won't be any unpleasant surprises.... or until the police send you a restraining order!

Actually, I never thought of Marth as a girl. In fact, I never even saw anything THAT feminine about him.

Actually, I never thought of Marth as a girl. In fact, I never even saw anything THAT feminine about him. Well, I suppose it depends on how familiar one is with Japanese media culture. Marth's femminess never struck me because I'd been used to anime by the point Melee came out, and the thought of femmy-looking guys wasn't that hard to comprehend. For someone in elementary school, who hasn't really gotten to "absorb" anime, the distinction is harder to make.
