Well, I suppose it depends on how familiar one is with Japanese media culture. Marth's femminess never struck me because I'd been used to anime by the point Melee came out, and the thought of femmy-looking guys wasn't that hard to comprehend. For someone in elementary school, who hasn't really gotten to "absorb" anime, the distinction is harder to make.

To be honest, I don't know all that much about Japanese culture in itself. I only know anything because I went through a massive Japanophile phase in high school (as ashamed as I am to admit it).
