FryGuy64, while you are painting, you might need to update this artwork of Muddy that you made, because he lacks his toe nails, he lacks his belly button, and his scarf isn't red, just like the official artwork of him: Seriously, you can't be picky like that. I'm not trying to copy the official artwork exactly. If anything I'm working from the sprites and then adding some personal touches. And that Muddy pic is years old now. It will be updated, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'll trace over the official art. Besides... I knew he had a belly button - but it's covered up by his paw. Stanley has an ass too, but I didn't need to draw it.

You Sure have accepted the Vectors in your drawings, and I love the results... Everything looks like extracted from a Nes instruction manual (a good one some of them were really crappy)

Well, I myself like to draw, though I'm not as good as you, FryGuy. I also have Ilustrator and Photoshop on my computer, but I don't where to start when it comes to using them. Any advice for a fellow artist?

Yes... find online artists whose style you like and save their work. Try to work out how they did something and try to replicate it. This website has good artwork, and they were lovely enough to include a brief tutorial on working with vectors in IllustratorBuy books and view websites with tutorials... find a good digital art magazine with tutorials. And then practice practice practice. The style I'm finding is working for me at the moment is to draw the character in pencil and scan that in. Then in Illustrator, trace around the outline of the drawing with the pen tool in a new layer. Set the opacity of your ink background at around 50% so you can see the sketch through it. Then start cutting holes in it using the shape toolbox. Then you add the colours in a new layer. Then add shadings in yet another layer. Who knows, I might find an even better way to do it. The way that tutorial up there does it worked for a while, but I find it hard to judge how thick I want some lines when I'm zoomed in close to the drawing. I also suggest you master the arrow tools. The white one is vitally important for making minor tweaks, but you have to find and select each point. To be honest... it's easier to ink.

Thanks FryGuy. I'll have to get on that as soon as I have time.

Love the first one (glad you're continuing this, I love your art style. Please bring back Professor Hector and his pick!), and while the second is good, something about it creeps me out...

It's the eyes. They're the eyes of a killer. I think I need to work on them again.
I have been coming up with concepts for various characters now. I've been "inking" Tamagon and Urban Champion, both coming along well.
The latest one that I'm happy with, of all people, is Mario. I didn't want to just copy his "plastic" look that has become his standard in games. So I made him look more like a fat plumber with a bushy tash. And it works without taking him too far away from his game look.
I still need to work on bits of Balloon Fighter, as I've kitted him out in something akin to extreme-sporting gear, and given him long, scruffy hair (helmet hair if you will). But something about his face bothers me. I think it's because I've given him a long face, but he has a round helmet. Maybe a more interesting helmet? I dunno. Work on him continues.
Professor Hector, funnily enough, is also causing me grief. I've got doodles of him all over the place, but nothing is working out. I might have to do something more radical with him.
I'm sure I've been working on others, but I've taken a little break from my doodles for now. Got so much else going on.

Dunno how much my opinions would help but I love your original Hector art. I think you should keep some of your old pics in the section, including Mike Jones and Bubbles. And I really hope the old Hector art stays. =D Plastic look? I dunno, I thought you meant SSBM trophy. I personally love the look in recent games (SM64DS, Mario Galaxy) as it's pretty much the permanent new look. Well I'm sure it'll turn out well. Balloon Fighter I dunno about. I always saw him as a teen with the helmet slung over his eyes, the eyes still visible but being cartoony white with black pupils often bugging out in a manner. Famicom colors and such. I do love the artwork one but yeah. Just my opinions. And TAMAGON FTW YAY

I want there to be an underlying common aesthetic between the illustrations. So I will overhaul them all. I like Hector's old style too, and I doubt I'll deviate from it a whole lot. But I will give him a better action pose, and draw him in vectors By plastic look I mean the Mario Party-style rounded, polished look. I don't like it. but I do like it when major Mario games deviate from it (In Sunshine, everything had a slightly grainy texture, something that looks like it's returning in Galaxy). This new look I have worked on is still quite clearly Mario. In fact, despite looking less like a plastic doll, he is still quite humorous to look at! Balloon Fighter has been drawn more like a teen in a helmet, but it's not one that comes down over his eyes. I like to go from the sprites as far as possible, mix in some official art if I have to, and then adapt it. I usually draw a few different versions before I land on one I'm happy with. I like his general design, but I still need to fix him helmet. Grrr. Tamagon rules. ;D

That Mario drawing is sounding pretty good, Fry. When can we see it?

I heart Devil World, my NES ROM collection wouldn't be complete without it. I would stop using ROMs for the NES if the VC would have the games I have there (Fire Emblem Gaiden, Startropics, Devil World, those are all gems).
Balloon Fighter sounds great, I do want to ask what color pattern he will have? Just curious.
Grainy look in Galaxy is fantastic right now, it gives his overalls more texture feel to them alongside the sewing visible on them. Hopefully that'll stay the same.

Say Dash, where can I get those Roms, along with an emulator to play them on?

Emulator I can't say I remember. I googled it, but it's the version of... fceu ultra. For ROMS, www.theoldcomputer.com is where I get most of mine. Meh-ly translated FE2 I have just for the closest to a good translation one, Devil World, SMB3, Startropics 1 and 2, etc... it's a pretty good source for rare or common finds.
