The difference is that the basis is a quarky and fun style, VS a realistic dramatic style with some comedy thrown in. So it's, uh... just like Sonic Riders, then. Are you actually expecting the game itself to be this lighthearted? Because if so, you're going to be as disappointed with it as I would be if it was.

I swear, get into a conversation about Sonic and all sense is fired out the window with a crossbow. XD Really. I think you're te one who's firing the logic out the window. Just because a game has a few not funny jokes makes it a not serious game? I think not. And Sonic Riders had a story too bland and empty to be serious OR light hearted.

I never said they weren't serious. I said they weren't completely serious. The way people talk about them, you'd think they were playing Final Fantasy. Sonic '06 may have had a dramatic story, but it still contained more comedy in it's cutscenes than, say, Mario Galaxy, regardless of whether you guys actually found it funny. Then we have Sonic Riders, which did exactly what you guys seem to be asking for and did a story devoid of drama of any kind played out purely for comedy, and you dismiss it. What do you want? XD EDIT: Another movie from the game.

It was spread out across the game in small doses, mostly slapstick stuff. Sonic gently kicking a robot over a cliff, Knuckles fumbling the holographic projector card, landing on his head after teleporting, Tails landing on his ass after teleporting, yet another Eggman tantrum, Eggman being sent spinning away into the air in a chair, Sonic's ending, Sonic Man, Shadow stopping time to casually kick Silver in the back of the head, Knuckles running the wrong way during the last story and having to double back... I got more, but seriously, that's more than enough.
Since I know somebody's going to accuse me of this, I'm not saying Mario Galaxy was more serious. Just that it didn't have as much comedy.

No angst, no stupid catchphrases, no taking itself too seriously.
I actually enjoyed that.

angst stupid catchphrases taking itself too seriously. See Kirbs, all of those things you posted aren't exactly in plain sight. In fact, I didn't even notice about half of them. The ones listed above on the other hand, were pretty blatant, and that was the downfall of the game's aesthetic aspect for me.

Yeah, and I absolutely agree with that. It just annoys me that people are praising this game for doing something that's been done in every game in the series as though it's brand new, and ignoring the fact that we have already had games devoted entirely to light-hearted fun because it doesn't fit their argument. It's that kind of selective hypocrisy that gets my back up. Though I'd say Shadow's game was the only one to take itself too seriously, the others generally have a lot of self-referential humour and parodies in them. Sonic Team just love their parodies.

I think the key difference here is that previously the ratio of drama to humour was 70:30. In Unleashed it appears to be 20:80. So that explains that. Based on what I'm reading around the web, the general consensus is that the Wii version pales in comparison to the 360 version. Complaints say that the Wii version has less Sonic stages, said Sonic stages are really bland, and the rest of the game is artificially padded by the equally bland menu-based hub. I always figured the 360 version would end up being better myself, anyway.

Well, I've seen a decent chunk of Unleashed so far, and I can definitely tell you it has more drama and less humour than the Riders games. Thing is, the Night of the Werehog movie can't be used to judge the game, because the only things in it related to Unleashed at all are Chip and the Werehog - the game isn't like that at all. I never even considered getting the Wii version, anyway. I've learned from past experiences that the Wii is never the way to go for multi-platform releases. All you get there is toned-down visuals and tacked-on waggle controls.

Well, I'm not really comparing Unleashed to Riders, which is a spin-off. I'm trying to compare it to Sonic '06, which is the last "big" Sonic game. In that instance, the drama they tried to pull of fell flat on it's face due to abysmal writing and reeeally horrendous acting. If what I've seen of Unleashed's cutscenes is anything to go by, the drama present in this game will be considerably easier to swallow.

So i've been hunting around for information, and apparently Knuckles and Shadow are 100% absent from the game. Shadow I could care less about, but KNUCKLES?! The fuck's up with that?
And what's up with the recent "Amy before Knuckles" thing anyway? God Sega...

You're complaining about them doing something right? Knuckles has turned from the cool character he used to be into Sonic's bitch lately. He needs to sit a few games out and think about what he's done. EDIT: Massive spoiler video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmNwevhFMIwThe truth about Chip and entering Eggmanland.

To tell the truth, I think this plot does the whole "darkness in one's heart" thing better than KH did. At the same time, I can't help but feel that the shippers are gonna jump all over that scene.

Eh, shippers will find the smallest excuse. Just try your best to ignore them, and maybe they'll go away.
