All I know is that if Sonic doesn't make the cut, every single reviewer will write a paragraph about how it doesn't make sense he's not in and Brawl won't score as high because they're disappointed that spaghetti-leg hedgehog was left out. Also, if Square throws in a playable character, my bet's on that chocobo from Chocobo Tales and that new wii game. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFzDXOjYqek

That's exactly what would happen.
Which is why... I'm not going to read a single review for Brawl when it comes out.
Simply put, I don't care WHAT anybody else thinks! My copy is already paid for, and I'll make my own opinion on it.
I don't doubt that the success of Brawl depends on Sega's Blue spiky mascot... but it doesn't matter to me either way. Brawl will be great with or without Sonic the Hedgehog. He's welcome as far as I'm concerned, but you won't hear complaints if he's not.
I'm as eager to find out as anybody. But I doubt we'll get a clear answer until it's just about launch time. That's the nature of hype. Gotta keep that hype train rolling.

I'm stunned by how many Newcomers we have. 9 already. If there truely is an AC rep, that brings it up to 10 that's almost as many new characters that was in Melee's entirety. With the clones no less.

Oh, I know! Isn't that great?! I mean, in Melee we got only 8 newcomers with original movesets, excluding the clones. 1. Bowser 2. Peach 3. Zelda 4. Sheik 5. Ice Climbers 6. Marth 7. Mewtwo 8. Mr. Game & Watch And in Brawl, we got not 9, but 11 newcomers with original movesets! 1. Meta Knight 2. Pit 3. Zero Suit Samus 4. Wario 5. Snake 6. Ike 7. Squirtle 8. Ivysaur 9. Charizard 10. Diddy Kong 11. Lucas And if there really is an Animal Crossing character, that makes it 12! I guess Sakurai really did run out of time to come up with original movesets in Melee. That explains the six Melee clones. With Brawl, he has had plenty of time to come up with more original movesets! ;D

Okay, so I'm wide awake. Business makes me very, very awake. Oh well... Killing time by running through the roster, once more.
Veterans: Mario, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, DK, Fox, Samus, Ice Climbers, Zelda, Link, Kirby, Pikachu. 12.
Newbies: Wario, Pit, Meta Knight, Snake, SONIC, Pokemon Trainer, Ike, Diddy Kong, Lucas. 9.
That's 21 characters, and 22 if you count Zero Suit Samus.
We can basically say with 99% confidence that Captain Falcon, Ganondorf and Luigi will return. So 24.
Marth and Mewtwo are potentials to stay. 26.
Mr. Game and Watch has kept a slot on the franchise breakdown. 27.
We have an Animal Crossing slot as well. DON'T deny it. 28.
We have one other slot for a new franchise. Takamaru, anyone? 29.
And let's assume... four more secret fighters, because it's an even number. Dedede, Krystal, Geno, and Lucario are the next highest vote getters (that aren't the boss-prone Ridley). 34.
Takamaru can take up that new franchise slot, since Little Mac and a few others have been deconfirmed. Also, due to Sakurai mumblings and recent evidence/rumors there is one other third party fighter making a 21st franchise for the list and 35 fighters total.
Overall, I think that's quite satisfying. Throw back in Zero Suit Samus and potentially Sheik and we're good to go with 37.
My only qualm: I am assuming the last franchise slot is a Nintendo owned character, but it could very well be the final third party character as well. Let's hope not, for the sake of Takamaru!
Let's also hope the game has more than 35 fighters even, because the more the merrier ;p

I personally think you're setting yourself up for dissapointment with Takamaru. He just doesn't seem as likely as you think he is. If there's one first-party franchise slot left, it seems way more likely that Pikmin or even Custom Robo would get that slot first.
I'd say Takamaru is a shoe-in to be in the game due to his retro appeal and the demand from the Toukouken polls. But I'd think him being an Assist Trophy has a much higher chance of happening than him being playable. A lot of your and Fry's reasoning for him being a "shoe-in" has nothing to do with his "demand" or "popularity", but just the fact that you both really really like the character. Which is great, I think he's cool too. I just don't think he'll be playable.

I agree with Thores. Replace Takamaru with Mega Man, and you're all set.
Also, look at the symbols.
1. Smash Bros 2. Donkey Kong 3. Star Fox 4. Kirby 5. F-Zero 6. Metroid 7. Earthbound/MOTHER 8. Pokémon 9. Zelda 10. Mario 11. Yoshi 12. Fire Emblem 13. 14. Ice Climbers 15. Animal Crossing 16. Wario 17. Metal Gear Solid 18. Kid Icarus 19. 20. Sonic
Let's assume that there are an even 20. That means two more franchises. All the new ones seem to come after Ice Climbers so doesn't that confirm Mr. Game & Watch? Since there's a blank above Ice Climbers? But what would be number 19...Mega Man? Or are there even more franchises after Sonic?

...Takamaru Haters *sniff* I don't hate Takamaru, just...about 95% of the population doesn't even know who he is... 13 and 19 will be Pikmin and Mega man. Just wait and see. Pikmin can't be 13 because it is a new series. Numbers 1-11 are series introduced in the original Smash Bros. 12-14 are series introduced in Melee. Therefore 13 is in fact Mr Game & Watch (has no one figured this out yet?) Though I forgot about Pikmin, it is most likely 19 and if Mega Man does get in, he will be 21.

I really don't want G&W in, but with your theory it's kinda inevitible.
EDIT: is Chibi Robo by any chance owned by Nintendo? Cuz if he is, he has a chance to be in as well.

Even if Mr. Game & Watch is bumped, why wouldn't they just make a stage for his franchise? After all, that's where Animal Crossing is aimed right now, so far as we know. (No, I'm not trying to start a debate here--factually, we have no evidence to support an AC character for the moment. Simple as that.) So it's very very very likely the G&W symbol remains as #13, with or without the character.
And also, don't forget, Kid Icarus was the 18th World Slot franchise ever since May up until Sonic's reveal this week. Just because Sonic is 20th World Slot doesn't mean he's the last one. There could just as easily be more franchises to follow his, and we know thanks to MGS and KI's placement that they're not seperated out by 1st, 2nd or 3rd Party.

Owned by Nintendo, but addfs aren't good. Game wasn't a blockbuster by reviews or sales. My thoughts on the roster StartesMario DK Link Samus/ZSS Yoshi Kirby Fox Pikachu C. Falcon Bowser Peach Ice Climbers Zelda Wario Pit Meta-Knight Lucas Pokemon Trainer Ike Diddy Kong (One more Newomer) HiddenLuigi Jigglypuff Marth Mewtwo Mr. Game & Watch Falco Ganondorf Olimar King Dedede Krystal Ridley (One other Nintendo Character) 3rd partySnake Sonic (is chargin' his Lazarz) Mega Man 37 total inclusding ZSS (36 selectable) Now, I explain........ -I think we'll have 22 starters (not counting 3rd parties yet, I'll get to that). This is including ZSS. Also, I have a strong hunch that there will be another newcomer. Don't ask why (or for my source). It might be a AC character, but I don't think so. -12 hidden. 7 returning. I do think Marth has a good chance to come back as Ike is basically Roy (with the appropriate move set). I also believe Ganondorf is going to come back (a given) as well as Falco. He's the 2nd most popular clone (Ganondorf is 1st) as well as it would be weird to have Krystal and Fox with out him. - I think Olimar is a lot more likely then people give him credit. I added Dedede, Krystal, and Ridley (he will be playable, not a boss). I also believe there will be one other newcomer in the hidden list. It could very well be Takamaru, but I also think Claus and Geno have a shot at that spot -I don't see Lucario getting in as playable. We have 4 pokemon characters right now. Enough. He'll be in a pokeball for sure. -The third party characters are weird. I can say, without a doubt, Mega Man will be playable. Even before the Capcom thing, I thought he stood a good chance. I left them in their own category because I'm not sure where to put them. My guess is they will be hidden, but as you progress though the Subspace Emisarry, they'll be unlocked (not by the normal means though, you'll fight them in the story, which will automatically unlock them). -Ness and Sheik are gone. The reason is that the two franchises (Mother and Legend of Zelda0 are focusing on the newer incarnations. They will appear as a trophy at least. -I think one hidden vet may become a starter. Not sure who, or why. Just a guess.
