Geno doesn't do much funny stuff, but when he does, it just makes it funnier. Also, everyone is saying Geno wasn't integral... he's the one collecting the Star Pieces to repair Star Road. He's the character that makes that part of the plot of the game instead of just a collect-a-thon.
And I think Geno would be easier to translate into a fighter than Mallow... especially since Mallow can't jump. I think that is another reason why Geno gets more of the rumor love. Also, he's cool.
And, maybe this just shows my age, but I found SMRPG to be a much funnier game than any of the other Mario RPGs (not to say that the others weren't. The M&L games were hilarious).

I guess SMRPG was more fun to people who enjoy traditional RPGs... I don't, however, and playing through it was a chore to me. The (lack of) enjoyment I got from that game almost put me off buying Paper Mario when it first came out, because I expected more of the same. Thank god I got it anyway, though. My fears were completely unfounded there, and Paper Mario is now my favourite Mario spinoff series ever. ;D

I'm not all that much into traditional RPGs. I much prefer Mario & Luigi and the Paper Mario games in terms of gameplay. There was just something about SMRPG, and it might be because I bought it the week it came out, so the gameplay of SMRPG isn't a put-off.

The gameplay in M&L kinda put me off, too. I still haven't finished the original, because it just became to dull and repetitive for me. I did finish Partners in Time, but I found the battle controls far too fiddly when you have all four characters there. It was really only the story that kept me interested.

While Mallow is more developed and has a nice side-story, Geno is "Mr. Exposition," he gives you the main plot of the game. "The Star Road has been broken. Wishes won't come true unless we fix it!" We don't find that out until Geno tells us.

Geno also has waaaaay more potential to be a cool fighter. I mean, he's a wooden puppet. He could have hilarious hit animations where his limbs go akimbo or his jaw falls off or something. And his attacks all involve those crazy finger bullets, elbow cannonballs, arm laser... He'd ooze potential badassedness.
Also, I'm just gonna throw in that the new topic I made kinda maybe gives a lot of support for Takamaru. JUST SAYIN' ;p

I've been thinking in Tingle lately... Does that trophy really rule him out? What if that trophy only depicts his TWW appearance, while a Tingle playable character is being based on his newer appearances?

Given the fact that there were about half a dozen trophies depicting different versions of Mario (Paper Mario, Metal Mario, Raccoon Mario, etc...) alongside those that you earned through single player modes, it's really not that hard to imagine. I would still think that it's possible.
