They have been confirming three characters a month at least... We would have 31 (not counting Zero Suit Samus) fighters shown by the release date, and save Snake and Sonic, there is no reason to assume any of the others before the Japanese release date are hidden. I could see at least 10 secrets... so I don't agree with the accessment that there are less than 40.
Who do I think is left?
Luigi, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, Mr. Game & Watch, Marth & Mewtwo (Need to get these six out of the way first, as they are the nonclones left from Melee, and no, just because Ike is default doesn't mean he replaces Marth, who now has THREE games to his credit, one of which will appear in English... I can see Captain Falcon being the only default fighter of this bunch, and Luigi having his Poultergust)
Ness, Ganondorf, Falco & Young Link (I don't think these guys are going to be gone, though Ganondorf WILL have a new moveset, and Young Link WILL be Wind Waker'd. As for Ness & Lucas, there are ENOUGH Mother PK abilities to go around to make them not clones... All of these guys will be secret as well)
Animal Crossing Main Character (Oh, shush... On the list of who is desired for Brawl, he's tied with Lucas & Mega Man. Plus the designer of Animal Crossing all but confirmed him. Gonna be default.)
King Dedede (Most popular on the poll and is going to be secret)
Krystal (Pretty Popular and every other really major franchise has a second unique default character now. Starfox needs one)
Ridley (I don't care if his size is on the big side, he's with Ike and Diddy in the polls, and Size doesn't matter in Smash! Secret)
Geno (He's up there with Ike & Diddy, and I could see Square Enix loaning him out, but he's technically not considered a third-party character. Would fight under Mario's Mushroom and would be secret. =P)
Captain Olimar (He's pretty popular also and would be default)
Takamaru & Sukapon (Well, they are the most popular classic characters and it's not like their games NEED much translating for the Virtual Console. May be default)
Isaac (He's from Golden Sun and if Nintendo owns him, I'd say he's going to be a fighter)
Mega Man (Mega Man is the popular choice for a third-party with Sonic confirmed)
My predictions come to exactly 40 fighters without transformations. 28 Default fighters and 12 Hidden.

Lucas probably has different moves, but somehow I think Kumatora will replace Ness as she actually learns PK Thunder/Fire (however not PK Flash). It would also make more sense she'd be Lucas' partner in battle, as they're from the same game. Ofcourse Melee had Marth and Roy: 2 characters from two different games from the same franchise. ...Also Kumatora's not very popular at all so when I actually think about it the chances of this happening are really slim  |

Yes. 2006 where there was absolutly no Gamecube games. Twilight Princess? That was December 2006. And there were quite a few others throughout the year. |

So, the person who did this may not have even included TP (which was also a Wii title). Again, I also have to ask who made that. |

Of Mother, only Jeff and Claus are on it. While Jeff would be an original fighter, he's from Mother 2 and thus not as likely as Ness returning. Claus' chances as a fighter died when Lucas appeared. Claus is Lucas's twin brother, and you don't think he WON'T be an alternate outfit to Lucas? My reasoning is that anyone with more than two votes is definately in as a fighter which includes Dedede, Geno, Ridley, Captain Olimar, Krystal, Takamaru, and "Wind Waker" Young Link. As for the ones with 2 votes, Sukapon is obvious because he's the last character to be shared from both polls. Animal Crossing MC is all but confirmed. Mega Man is most popular third-party now with Sonic confirmed, and Isaac is the most intuitive and well-known of the rest of that list to be a fighter. K. Rool and Claus could be pushed into Boss roles and don't have the popularity Ridley has. Kawashima and Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents are definate Assists, and the rest are just too obscure and don't have the popularity of Sukapon or Takamaru. |

Is it just me or does Pokemon Trainer not appear on that poll? But yet, he's still in. I therefore don't think its worth completely basing everything on it.
The way I see it, all characters with an original moveset (this includes Luigi) except Ness are back. Ness is replaced by an almost the same but not quite Lucas. Young Link and Ganondorf (and maaaaaaaaaybe Falco, but I'm guessing not) return out of the clones, with Young Link in Wind Waker style.
Mario series gets Bowser Jr. He's in every Mario game now, and is the series 2nd most major enemy now. He's in. Geno is defintely an assist at best, as he is a wizzleing one-time-character that nobody should care about. And I would love Waluigi, but no, he's an assist.
Krystal, Lucario, Dedede, Ridley fill out existing series' positions. All are popular and would have easy to create movesets.
Captain Olimar gets in as a rep from a new series. If the quote flying around is acurate, Muddy Mole takes a spot. Sukapon also gets in for obscure WTF character hobos n' giggles. AC character gets in, no reason at the moment to assume the series wont have a playable character. Megaman and Pacman are more third party dudes.
There. don't know how many that works out to, but I'm saying around 40 characters is the go. If its less than 40, Falco, King K Rool (if there are 2 DK characters in the starting roster, I definitely could see it getting an unlcokable character as well), Takamaru, etc are all possibilities to slot in.
EDIT: Ooh, actually by my counting (and I will say its likely to be wrong, I'm sleepy) there are actually 40 characters there up to my 3rd party dudes. Sweet.

He has plenty of moves to differentiate him from TP Link. And if they make Ganondorf a clone again, that would be the dumbest act of the century. Seriously, he has dozens of moves different than Captain Falcon!I might of misunderstood your post. Please correct me if I did. |
