Maybe 50. But I doubt it. I say each game series should have a least 2 characters from it's series. Ect: Samus and Ridley since Zero Suit Samus isn't an offical character that you can choose every time you play Brawl. But, then again not every character should have two. Ect: Ice Climbers, Mother 3 and if it is Sonic Series, they sould all only have one character from my point of view. For Mother 3 I would say Ness and for Sonic Series I would pich Sonic. But the Ice Climber series ( which I don't know much about), I don't know who they should have representing them, maybe just Popo and Nana like in Melee.

I've always agreed they could be around 40. This is as simple as following an arithmetical progression from the amount of characters in the two previous games. ...or he could have an in-game roster of 40 with full-online connectivity wherein you can download further characters over time and possibly exceed 50 :D No offense Masa, but I like my idea better. That would be a good idea for characters that didn't make it to the original roster (unlockable or starter), whether because they weren't planned or because Nintendo didn't get on time the rights to use them (in the case of non-Nintendo characters). You know, like "service packs" of sorts.

Way to miss the point, bub! It was me being cynical about there being no online (when was the last time that was even mentioned) than me WANTING more characters instead of online.

That'll be the big reveal in November. Trust me. Sakurai loves that kinda "keep them waiting till they can't bear it any longer" crap

I posted this is another thread, but decided to repost it here so I can discuss it. This I found on Gamefaqs.
PuroresuGrande Posted 8/12/2007 3:05:36 PM message detail
DON'T ASK FOR MY SOURCE. You will not be disappointed...
There are 34 playable characters (excluding transformations). There are 20 starting characters, 14 hidden characters. Six characters have been removed from the last game. One of the "Original 12" has been removed. There are 15 newcomers (excluding transformations). All but one of the represented franchises from Super Smash Bros. Melee will be returning. Two character profiles will be revealed this coming week at the DOJO!! (one veteran and one newcomer).
Mock me now if you must, but I'll certainly be having the last laugh. By the end of the week, you'll see that I'm correct with at least two of the above points.
Last time some guy on Gamefaqs started posting info like this all clean and simple, swearing it on his life, we all laughed at him. Three months later, Melee was released and he was right. So I kinda have a newfound listening ear for people like this. It sounds feasible. Much more than most "my uncle works for Nintendo" yahoos.
Besides... he guessed the newcomer, before it happened.
Analysis
So, he says the final roster is going to be 34. And that we will have 20 starting characters. Looking at things, it very well could be going that way.
Mario, Link, Kirby, Samus, Fox, DK, Yoshi, Zelda, Bowser, Pikachu, Peach --That's 11 Veterans
Pit, Wario, Meta Knight, Ike, Pokemon Trainer (w/ 1 Pokemon) --That's 5 Newcomers
Zero Suit Samus, Trainer (w/ 2 other Pokemon) --That's 3 transformations. Sheik makes it 4. But, like Melee, transformations are not counted in the final roster. Cool, since that means more fighters.
So so far, we have 16 characters we'll be starting with. The reason I say starting is because Sakurai did not reveal unlockables until Melee was released, and he plans to do the same with Brawl. Regardless, it would seem foolish to discuss unlockable fighters before regular starting characters are touched upon, doesn't it? Kinda numbs the excitement.
With 16, we can bring that up to 20 by adding 4 more. We already know F-Zero and Mother characters are returning. Maybe not Ness, since this mystery guy states one of the 12 isn't returning (which, as we all as know, IS a possibility Sakurai has mentioned), but somebody from Mother. And Captain Falcon is likely to return. So 18.
That leaves two more slots open till 20. If only one of the Melee franchises gets the axe, it's Game and Watch. Why? Well, logically speaking, Game and Watch was the last franchise to be added and so it would be after Ice Climber in the icon list and hence closer to the new franchises. If that list caps off at 18 or at least doesn't add many more slots, then the new franchises need to expand into those two extra slots on there. So a new franchise could appear right under Animal Crossing/Wario (whatever it was) and just above Ice Climber.
The 20th character, then, is a mystery. Could it be a returning fighter? A lot of people would like to see Marth as a starting character. Or could it be somebody totally new? I definitely put my foot in my mouth on that theory with Ike AND Pokemon Trainer appearing.
Now we have 20 starting fighters, which is insane. It's almost the Melee roster. And, with 14 unlockable characters, we get 34.
Oh, and for that 15 newcomers thing (again, not including transformations):
Pit, Meta Knight, Ike, Pokemon Trainer, Wario, Snake, and 9 others.
With 6 characters removed from Melee (presumably Ness, Game and Watch, and all the clones but Ganon and Falco), that leaves 19 returning fighters. We counted 11 earlier. And then assumed the additions of Ice Climbers and Falcon for 13.
--Luigi, JPuff, Marth, Mewtwo, Falco, Ganon. There's 6 more to make 19.
So all of this guy's math checks out. What he's saying, the numbers he gave, everything.
He could have just gone and done his own math and said "okay, 34 sounds pretty good," which I don't doubt, but what he says I find pretty surprising. It's a final roster that actually won't disappoint. Those 9 mystery newcomers would include 1 more starting character (Lucas?) and 8 more unlockables. Add the 6 veterans I last listed, and that's 14 unlockable fighters total.
Now the question remaining to be answered: who are those 8? Are 2 of them Third Party? Will they include Dedede? Diddy? Other popular choices? Or will Sakurai blow us apart with some crazy new idea? Lolo and Lala tagteam? Card Hero with summonable monsters? 9-Volt who attacks with 8-bit sprites?
We need only wait till November 22nd, my friends.

34 is such a but ugly number though. I could beleive 36... but 34? Ew.
Maths checking out isn't a sign he's right (clearly we can do maths too), and I'm not sure I believe.
I am thinking 2 characters this week for some reason, too - but if theres only 4 more to be revealed before then.....

(clearly we can do maths too) I can't. I'm mathtarded D: Anyway, the guy's numbers check out, yes--but I always like to say to myself "If it's on the internet, it must be true" with as much sarcasm as possible. XD I won't buy it until it actually happens. Though having a Mother 3 character would certainly give some momentum to an official translation of the game...and I DO like how your math counts Falco as one of the returning characters, Flip. <3

NOTE: I originally posted this in the Pokemon Trainer thread as a response to flip, before I noticed the discussion here. This is my reply, umodified. Note that I did not read Flip's analysis before typing all this, which is why some parts are so similar, and there are a couple of mistakes, such as me forgetting to not count Zamus as a complete character.
Okay go ahead and read it now.Well geez. If that's true at all (and seeing as you found that on GameFAQs, I'm saying that there's about a 1% chance of that), we sure are gonna start running out of character updates soon, and we're already running low on surprises. Right now, assuming we're only getting starters, we currently have 15 out of 20 character profiles already on the site. And we currently know about 7 of the 15 Newcomers. The remaining starters are possibly: Peach Captain Falcon Ness or Lucas Captain Olimar Meta Knight, Marth, or some crazy surprise. And SIX characters leaving? One of them is from the first game, and one of them is either Game and Watch or Ice Climbers. So: Jigglypuff or Ness Ice Climbers or G&W Dr. Mario Roy Pichu ...Young Link or Mewtwo. Lemme explain that last bit of speculation. If Jigglypuff is cut, then I think Mewtwo might stay since they won't cut Pokemon representation THAT much. If Ness is cut (which is more likely in my eyes right now), then Mewtwo will be replaced by Red, and Young Link will be revamped to fit his Wind Waker form (but he'll still be called "Young Link"). The good news is that this means Falco will stay! As for the 8 Newcomers we don't know about. Well. Olimar. Lucas maybe. Dedede, Krystal, Ridley, Ray 01, Tingle and Sonic. This list is half realistic and half rampant hope. So the guy says two of his points will be proven this week. If true, one of those points is obviously the two character profile updates. So what other updates would provide proof? Sakurai isn't going to tell us the size of the full roster or even the starting roster, not this week. So I can think of three things that would provide our second piece of proof: -Jigglypuff gets announced as a Poke Ball Pokemon. -Ness gets announced as an Assist Trophy. -We see a stage/item whatever for a new franchise... and it's icon number 14. But like I said, it's a GameFAQs post, so it's probably a very realistic, convincing, steaming pile of crap . I guess we'll see whether or not all this speculation was wasted by the end of the week.

I don't tend to believe these things - even when they turn out to be right I assume they were lucky guesses. After all - how many of US have turned out to be right about these things?
But you know I'm not one to turn down speculation. I have shuffled the statements about a bit.
One of the "Original 12" has been removed.
Confirmed: The entire starting roster Unconfirmed: Ness, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, Luigi
Ness is the most likely to be removed and replaced. Jigglypuff is next in line for the chop. Falcon and Luigi are fairly safe, I'd say.
Six characters have been removed from the last game.
Confirmed: Mario, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, DK, Link, Zelda, Pikachu, Samus, Fox, Kirby Unconfirmed: Luigi, Dr. Mario, Young Link, Ganondorf, Pichu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Falco, Captain Falcon, Ness, Ice Climbers, Marth, Roy, Mr. Game & Watch.
Only six? Well, if we include Ness, that's five. Roy is almost definitely gone, so that's four. Pichu and Dr. Mario? Down to two... If we remove the SSB64 characters from the list, as only one can go then we have... Young Link, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Falco, Ice Climbers, Marth, Mr. Game & Watch.
All but one of the represented franchises from Super Smash Bros. Melee will be returning.
All but two have been confirmed! This basically means Mr. G&W or Ice Climbers are gone.
Taken one of them from the list above, and one more of your choice. Ganondorf aside, any of the above could be up for the chop.

I think there is some truth to this. Isn't it a bit errie he said a newcomer was to be annopunced, and BAM, we get this. If another verteran is shown this week, I'm a beliver.

My bet from the beginning has always been that Ice Climbers, Roy, Young Link, Pichu and Doc Mario would bite the bullet--even before this whole schtick popped up. Now that we have Ike representing Fire Emblem (and being a slow, powerful character like Roy was), Roy is almost assuredly gone. And with Red repping for Pokémon, the chances of Pichu returning is slim.
Then again, what do I know? At one point I thought for sure Zelda would get axed. XD

I think Game & Watch is tthe one getting axed. He never really boaded over well with people. Ice Climbers did. I love them. But, we'll see. But, will they have 5 pokemon characters in this game. Will one get the axe. Will there be a 4th gen pokemon? Too many questions.
