We're talking about the same box art, right?  Yes, Thats the one, I like that one (but the Japanese SSB is better) both of Melee Box Arts look boring to me and this Brawl one... I dont like it Sr. BTW. I vote for Wizzles ;D |

I hated that box since the day I saw it. It's so badly drawn. If I remember correctly... not alot of people liked it. IGN actually have an old article just about how bad that box art is.  |

How is it "extreme"? It looks like a comic book, but a sort of 'goofy' comic book. Not like the generic buff man comic book look or the generic 3d artwork of the PS1 onwards.

It only looks goofy because it's so badly drawn. XD
Magazine covers like that were really common a few years before Smash Bros. Characters from various series that were appearing in the magazine fighting each other for no real reason. It was supposed to be hip and cool and cool and hip. But it just came off incredibly cheesy, like that SSB art. Thankfully the game was more tasteful than the cover made it appear.
Notice how Mario's kicking Pikachu in the head? LOL the editor hates Pikachu and loves Mario! He'll buy my cover for sure!

I didn't think it was drawn bad at all! But, it was still very cartoony, and they could've tried a little more.

The Japanese box for SSB64 was better in that regard. It looked less like a crappy magazine cover and more like a page out of some sort of official manga book released by Nintendo. That, and it shows all the characters, plus Kirby is the only one not inside a panel, thus starting the whole "Smash-Kirby-Sakurai" connection.
