Haha, yeah, crazy, huh? Dr. Mario got in over Wario! Haha! And the only reason he got in Melee was because Sakurai loved his music! Wow! Music!! Yeah, that deems Dr. Mario a very important Mario character! Crazy, I know! ...And what's wrong with that? XD Dr. Mario is, after all, an important Nintendo puzzle game. Meowth doesn't even have an awesome song going for him, especially not now that My Music exists, making that redundant anyway.

Arcadenik, you REALLY shouldn't take these Super Smash Bros. updates so personally.
And you REALLY should try basing your arguments on something other than your own opinions some time. It makes you sound less like a douchebag.

Sorry to bring this back up, but Arcadenik, you never answered Kirbychu's question.

Just to comment, I'm happy Meowth appears in the damn gameplay this time, and not only as a trophy. And I love Meowth. So I'm perfectly content, myself.

The character selection screen doesn't have to be a 100% accurate statement of what's major and what isn't in the Nintendo universe. There can always be some bias and subjectivity from the director. While I loathe this "underrated"/"overrated" debate and agree that it shouldn't be taken so personal, Dr. Mario is a good example of that bias.
Ghorghor and Deoxys are indeed important characters, but they are unplayable likely for other reasons than low importance. Same with Meowth. It's a major symbolic character, like Sakurai said in this entry, but there are more Pokémon that can be added, and they will hopefully be recent, so that the game looks up to date.

Meowth is not an unimportant character in Pokemon. He's a major Pokemon who happens to be underrated and unappreciated. Even Sakurai acknowledges that Meowth is a major Pokemon in Meowth's page. Meowth would have made a weak and speedy fighter whose speciality is scratching and throwing coins. He could even jump very high like cats do. We never had a scratch specialist, let alone a playable cat, in Smash. Meowth is associated with Team Rocket and is known as a kleptomanic so he could even borrow Skitty's Covet move and use it to steal other characters' held items. Meowth would have his own theme Meowth's Party. It could even be played during his Final Smash where he plays his guitar and have a stampede of Pokemon running across the stage. Meowth's Party would have made a great Pokemon-themed stage with a lot of unplayable Pokemon who are not in Pokeballs attacking the stage much like in the Saffron City stage in SSB64. Now my dreams and hopes for Meowth are lost. My remaining dreams and hopes now lie with the very few characters left unconfirmed. I'm sorry for the rants, its just that I was in shock over the news this morning that I was too upset for Meowth. I'm going to stop now... Let me be. I need time alone to mourn for Meowth.

Well, I don't agree that Meowth is underrated at all. Meowth is so popular and wanted only because the anime (and the anime alone, mind you) made him a major character. If Ratatta had been in Team Rocket instead, we'd be having this same debate over that Pokémon instead. After all, Smash doesn't have a rat with bite-based attacks either. And I say this is more important than a cat with scratch-based attacks! I'm not so sure Meowth's Party would be included anyway, since it's a song from the anime... but it could very easily still be in, thanks to My Music, as I said earlier.

The anime made Jigglypuff a major Pokemon, too. Same with Pichu. Same with even Pikachu.
The only Poke-characters who are really important from the games are Pokemon Trainer and Mewtwo. But the rest? It was the anime's doing.

Ahh, fun times. I don't need to contribute to this one, everybody else has said all the nasty things for me Anyway, it's great that Meowth is back from the PokéBall. But am I the only one who noticed that his model is terrible? Like, worse than Piplup and Munchlax? Like, it looks almost like it came straight out of Colosseum, which was straight out of the first Stadium game?

Pikachu is the series mascot. Jigglypuff's Sing, Rest, weight and floatyness make it a unique fighter. And Pichu was added to be a Pikachu clone, so it really can't be counted toward anything.
But unlike Meowth, Pikachu and Jigglypuff have been largely important in the games too, both being rare Pokémon that appear only in select areas that players tend to spend a long time hunting out toward the beginning of the game. Meowth was not only fairly common, but originally only appeared in the Blue version. The only reason it was chosen as the Team Rocket Pokémon is the cat-mouse dynamic, making it a somewhat natural nemesis for Pikachu.
Meowth probably could've been someone fun to play as, but it was never very likely to happen, and it certainly doesn't prove that Sakurai is ignoring the more obscure characters. If anything, it proves quite the opposite. The massively famous and popular Meowth has been bumped off. Perhaps leaving a spot for Sukapon or somebody equally obscure...?

Kirbychu, what kinda name is that?
And I REALLY wanted Meowth to be playable. When I was young I used to watch the anime just to see Meowth.
I mean, Meowth would be totally awesome in this game.

The anime made Pikachu the series mascot. Without the anime, he is just another rare wild Pokemon in the games. Meowth's Pay Day and borrowed move Covet (from Skitty), speed and high jumps would have contributed in making him a unique fighter.
Also rarity in games =/= importance in games. And Meowth would have made a fine rival for Pikachu in Brawl. Meowth is Pikachu's Meta Knight and Wario. He would have represented the crime syndicates in the games (Team Rocket/Aqua/Magma/Galatic) by wearing their shirts as alternate costumes.

Raticate would be a batter one, really. It looks more "evil", like Wario and Meta Knight. And, unlike Meowth, it's actually used by Team Rocket in the games.

If you say so, kirbychu. Meowth is just a major Pokemon. One of the most familiar faces of Pokemon. Simple as that. It is just sad that he is once again given the shaft.

I wouldn't call it being given the shaft, Arcadenik. It was given the shaft in Melee. You should be glad its actually in Brawl.
