Meowth. It’s considered a major Pokémon, but it did not show up in Melee. It now makes its first appearance since the original Smash Bros.Meowth appears! It unleashes a slow coin barrage! They call this Pay Day, but it’s not like it’s getting any coins out of it.It doesn’t appear to be throwing the coin on its forehead.Huh? That definitely appears to be a coin on its forehead, but what do you suppose they call it in Japan?
Maybe if you check the Japanese version of Smash Bros. Dojo you can find out...

Finally! I knew he wouldn't be playable, but it's kind of a shame. Does anybody know what his coin on his head is called?

Yay Meowth! I like him, but I think he works best as a Poke Ball. He just doesn't seem worthy of playable status to me.
And the japanese site tells me NOTHING! I'm not going to bother to try and translate it. It will probably just tell me about Mr. Cock and how his hat is worn.

A "golden coin" I take it? That move is also named after coins.
Meowth was strangely missing from Melee outside of its special trophy, at which point only 100 new Pokémon were introduced.
The idea of showing this Pokémon as playable wouldn't have been unfounded. But that's also why Meowth needed to come back to the arena one way or another. At least this gives chances for newer Pokémon species to be playable in the game.

It's nice to see one of the original Pokeball Pokemon return. I would think it is unlikely that the all the originals are to return like Beedrill and Hitmonlee (Unoun and Lyn AT do the same basic attack routine).

(Unoun and Lyn AT do the same basic attack routine). You mean Unown and Beedrill right? I want to see the return of Onix from the original SSB, but I severely doubt it'll happen.

Ugh.... This is when I have lost all faith in Sakurai. His statement about not interested in making a Brawl roster with nothing but overrated and popular characters is bull. X(
Its true. Out of all the newcomers announced, not one of them are underrated nor obscure. Even Pokemon Trainer was just an excuse to have the overrated Charizard playable (he can't be playable alone because one starter is not important than the other starters).
No Toad. No Tom Nook. No Little Mac. And now no Meowth! Who's next? No Captain Olimar? No Muddy Mole? No Lip? Ugh... Where's the love for the underdogs?

No, he meant Unown does Beedrill's attack, and Lyn does Hitmonlee's attack. I'd like to see Onix too, but something tells me Steelix will probably take his place. Or a new rock type.

X( But the only reason Meowth was considered a possibility over, say, Skiploom (just picked a Pokemon that was somewhat obscure there) is that he is popular (and overrated?). So thats complete gibberish.

Ah, Meowth, how I've missed thee since the N64 version. Doesn't seem like he spams coins every direction this time. It was fun throwing someone in the center of Meowth and have him hit with all 4 coins at once, though it was hard to do.
Also seconding the return of Onix.

This clearly disconfirms Meowth as a playable Pokemon. Everything is going according to the plan!

Popular/overrated whatever you want to call them.... they build up hype for the game. Not only that... but that's what Smash Brothers was built on. Popular, LEGENDARY, Video game characters crossing over into each other's universes. I mean... I understand how you feel. Lucas is a household name... and I can't turn around without hearing SOMETHING about Ike... but it's not a bad thing... in fact it's necessary to grab attention to the roster. I know Sakurai isn't going to only put in extremely popular characters, who have been in a million games, like Pit.... and he shows us that he gives even obscure, forgotten characters like Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog a chance. Plus, Lip was de-confirmed AGES ago. (Thank god.) Oh, and I have no idea what those coins are called. I do know that there is an old Japanese saying.... "Like giving gold coins to a cat".... that basically means "Giving something valueable to somebody who can't appreciate it." (Something I'm sure Sakurai can relate to!) And I know Meowth is based off of those familiar looking cats, with the paw up in the air and they're always holding a coin (I'd look it up on Wikipedia, but I dont' want to look like a Weeaboo). The Japan site probably makes a pun about that saying. Since, Meowth throws gold coins at somebody.... and they won't appreciate them. I looked at the babelfish translation, and they wonder if the other regions will understand the refrence.
