There's one final 1st-generation Pokémon that can still make it, and that's Ditto.
In these more than 2 years that I've been discussing Melee's sequel on message boards, I read several times the unfunny idea of having Ditto as a character that spans any other random character. I still consider it a lame idea, but I think it's possible. Remember that Ditto appears as the icon for random character selection in the tournament mode of Melee; doing that in a game that could use generic shapeshifters instead of game-specific shapeshifters is comparable to making Ditto a selectable character.

Ditto? Why bother with Ditto if you can just select an actual character? And let's not forget that Ditto's only move in Pokemon games is Transform.

I think Ditto is infinitely more likely to appear in a Pokéball.

The common ideas include: - Make Ditto just be a character slot for random selection (again lame because you could do that without a special character slot)
- Make Ditto transform randomly when a match starts or when it comes back after being knocked off.
That's what they could do with a "playable"/"selectable" Ditto, if Ditto doesn't appear from a Poké Ball this time.

I would be kind of cool. Charade did that in SC2. He was a different character at the beginning of a round.

That Ditto stuff makes sense to me, it's not lame at all. Each match you are a different fighter! Of course, that could only work in Vs mode.

Or you could just have a question Mark on a tile with "RANDOM" Written under it as that would make more seince. And there's still another 1st gen pokemon MISSINGNO!

Back in my day we didn't need random buttons! We found a blank section on the character roster menu and we used it dagnabbit!

In all seriousness, Missingno would rule as a Pokeball pokemon. Wouldn't that be really cool? Unfortunately I'm very well aware that could never happen in the real world. Nintendo would NEVER openly admit to a glitch like that. Have they ever refrenced a glitch before? Even as a joke? Like for example... Ermac from Mortal Kombat became real because of a glitch in the original mortal kombat (A red pallete would be applied to one of the ninjas, and the name would be "ERROR MACRO" but abreviated.) I say they should make MissingNo a real pokemon.

They did reference to Error ("I AM ERROR") in Super Paper Mario and I can remember they said something about the minus world of Super Mario Bros. on the official website of the NES classics for the GBA.

They referenced the minus world at the beginning of the Underwhere section in SPM, too.
