Yeah, I got the vibe from the update Sakurai doesn't really like Stafy. Once again, it's whatever he FEELS and not what DESERVES the add. Stafy may have been a good candidate, but Sakurai thinks he sucks so we don't get him. Que sera, sera.
Personally, I'm viewing Sakurai more and more like a Gamefaqs fanboy with each passing day. Seriously. His decisions on what's cool and what's not aren't very different from most Joe Schmoes who post on those forums. I mean, yeah: I dig the character additions and the retro trophies. But why the hell would you pass up on stuff like a playable Saki or throw in a Pictochat stage if you weren't some giddy fanboy?
It took Sakurai THREE friggin games to finally add Pit. I'm just worried my picks are soon to befall the axe like so many others.... *shivers*

I got to agree with you, Flip. I mean... Jigglypuff? Pichu? Dr. Mario? Roy? Ice Climbers? Mr. Game & Watch? Pokemon Trainer? Snake? No Metroid Prime stuff? No Little Mac? No Meowth? No Stafy? Music from X? Replace Ness with Lucas? Lots of references to Kirby Super Star? Etc, etc. But you get my point. So yeah, Sakurai puts whatever he likes in the game and make the stuff he doesn't like into secondary roles such as music or ATs/Pokeballs, JMO.

In Sakurai's defense, he never clearly expresses his opinion on the site. As a matter of fact, since Nate Bildhorf handles the US translations for the Dojo, what we're reading could be a load of crock the Natester's added, without any supervision from Sakurai at all. Even then, what is said on the Dojo is hardly self-expression. Most of the time it's Nate acting out how others might react to what's posted.
Come on, I don't post for a day and we have Grammar Fights and start to think Sakurai hates everything we like? For shame ;D

Hmm... he might not write anything on the site.. but he reflects his opinions and fanboyism through what he puts and doesn't put into the game. As "Sakurai" once said, if it is good to him, it is good enough for him to put it in the game.

People, you are acting as fanboyist as you blame Sakurai to be. You have to remember that he works with a full team that not only know Melee down to perfection but he also ask every single designer, musician and director on how they want their creations to be treated. If for some reason all this decisions that for sure include important people like Miyamoto, Iwata, Totaka and even Kojima doesn't match with your own likes well, tough luck, the game is designed for the masses and those masses don't know who or where Stafy comes from. Sure he can throw a self decided bone once in a while, he IS the game director after all, but to expect every single Nintendo character as playable or down from there is not realistic.

The masses don't know who or where Lucas comes from. And today's generation of gamers don't know who or where Pit and Ice Climbers came from. But now they do know who and where they came from because they are playable in Brawl. Same with Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Marth, and Roy in Melee. We are not saying we want all the retro/Japanese characters to be playable. Just the select few are the best choices (Little Mac, Takamaru, Stafy, Pit, etc.) or even if they are quirky and less-wanted (Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Muddy Mole, Sukapon, etc.).
Also the only reason Ice Climbers and Mr. Game & Watch are most-wanted now is because they were playable in Melee. I doubt they would have a huge fanbase today if they were never in Melee. So it might be a good idea to have a few retro/Japanese newcomers to showcase the obscure franchises. Who knows? They might be popularized for the next generation much like how Metroid finally came back from retirement and how Fire Emblem finally went international. But for now I'm hoping Kid Icarus comes back just like Metroid did.
Instead of showing off what Stafy can do in his game series (he got 4 games out already) as a Brawl newcomer, Sakurai turns him into a weak AT. What kind of first impression is that to the non-Japanese masses? They might think his games suck because of that so Nintendo might decide not to bring Stafy games to NA and PAL regions.

I love how every time Sakurai makes a decision somebody doesn't agree with, he suddenly becomes the enemy. Now people are even calling him a GameFAQs fanboy?
Seriously, it's hilarious.

I have to agree wih Arcadenik on this one. So here is a moment of silence to mourn over Stafy's declusion from the character roster.

I dunno about you guys, but Stafy being attackable doesn't make me think his games suck. For the same reason that Mew doing nothing doesn't make me think it's a useless Pokémon. I think this is more just another "Sakurai doesn't listen to my ideas!!" tantrum right here.

To the mainstream audiences who know Mew only from the movies, they believe Mew is this rare Pokemon who just floats around and is the base for Mewtwo's DNA. To the actual Pokemon players, Mew is a powerful rare Pokemon.
Sure, we know the Stafy games don't suck if they got 4 games already. But the mainstream audiences don't know that... So when they first see Stafy, they might assume that Stafy is a weak character so he didn't make the cut. JMO.

What about the even more mainstream audiences who have never heard of Mew ever?

Those who never ever heard of Mew before Brawl would likely think this Pokemon just floats inside its bubble and do nothing.

Exactly. So, if it's okay for people to think that about Mew, surely it doesn't matter what they think of Stafy. To be honest, anyone who thinks his games are bad because of this wasn't going to buy it anyway. After all, it is a cutesy game about a star. (WATCH OUT, ARCADENIK, THIS NEXT PART IS SARCASM) How can something that cute be strong!? And things that aren't strong must be bad!!
