Ah, the Mushroom Kingdom. Most Smash players recognize this place from previous games in the series, where the world was represented in a pixel-art style reminiscent of the original Super Mario Bros.
But why the "y" on the end of "Mushroom"? What’s the difference?Oh, so that’s why! This time around, we’ve designed a stage that recreates the layout of World 1-1 in Super Mario Bros.—but with rich backgrounds added to the mix.The stage scrolls forward at a leisurely pace.Pieces of familiar scenery scroll by.The kingdom you once knew has turned to ruins over the long years, and it is now your battlefield.
You’ll get to enjoy a wide range of familiar structures. Also, since the stage slowly scrolls sideways, battles here will require you to come up with a very different strategy for winning.
Oh, and when you select this stage it will occasionally load an alternate underground stage. This is the famous World 1-2. This one’s also quite charming.

That's pretty sad.. and the stage looks so gloomy.. I can't help but think of this tune playing in the background.

Absolutely amzing looking stage. I happy to see this in the game. The ruin style is also quite an interesting idea. I wonder if this increses the chance of the original DK stage now? it needs some Mad Max biker koopas in the background. It would be great if it had some Dry Bones on the stage in the places where the Koopa's were. EDIT: @ 8bitretroboney: That music is pretty cool, now I want that tune to be on this stage as well.

You know... this is REALLY unexpected.
Again... this is one of those updates that makes me think... if any of these prophets were real, they would have mentioned this.
This is something that hasn't been done in smash brothers... taking an old stage... and AGING it. That really is brilliant! At first I was like "The hell?" but now I think this is one of the most original ideas yet!
(And also, Olimar is heavier than I expected)
"Pokemony Stadium"..."Greenish Greens".... "Hyrule-esque Temple"...

Ha this is brilliant. A simple idea, but executed oh so well with just a hint of crazy. Good job Sakurai.

Oh, my, god...
That was my first reaction, Sakurai, your a genius! And hey, the original sprites always had brown ground, so it's logical that it's all rocky area... That and asking the original composer to rearange it...
brilliant... so damn brilliant...

Not really. The first four posters of this thread (below my first post) didn't say "brilliant". Before I clicked that link, I was thinking of the same commercial. I was also thinking of this Geico commercial and when the Jim Carrey version of The Grinch shouted "BDDDRILLLIANT!" (Brilliant!) after The Grinch's dog/reindeer Max removed the red nose off of his nose.

I wonder if this increses the chance of the original DK stage now? Hopefully it doesn't (assuming you mean the SSB64 Kongo Jungle). I mean we've already had it both in Melee and the original. It's time we had some new ideas for DK stages, besides the obvious 'DK jungle-themed stage' to be thought of. As for this stage, I'm taking it as read that the stage repeats after you reach the flagpole, (otherwise it would be pretty boring) and that the ? blocks yield items. The best bit about this stage, is the possibility of playing on the underground stage. And finally, it is nice to see a modern take on a old classic (it certainly brings back all kinds of memories for me).

I'm sure he meant a classic arcade Donkey Kong stage, which would be totally awesome.

This is an awesome update. Oh, see how even the Mushroom Kingdom can't escape from desrtification!
You know, I'd be happier if this stage hasn't become ruins.
And I hope this can become a Subspace stage.

This is absolutely bizarre! I mean... why "Mushroomy"? I mean, I love this update, it's just SO bizarre I don't really know how to react!
