It's Fact now, sorry. :/ (Personally I was neutral on the matter, but I know it annoys some of you.) youtube.com/watch?v=FYmSzubQJKUSPOILER: Cranky = Classic DK DK = ...Not Clasic DK.

Yay! Now this dumb debate can end once and for all. Now, we just need to see Donky Kong Jr. all grown up. Hell, I'd settle for him as a baby again, as long as we see him.

If it says Cranky is DK's grandfather, than that means DK Jr. is DK's father, though he's most likely dead.

Yeah, we saw.
You can argue it's Rare's fault the whole "DK Jr is Cranky's son or grandson" is so unclear since they retconned it in DK64. DK Jr is this DK as of DK64. I think that anyways. Otacon says what was known before this so it's forgivable. But yeah, this is what was said in Mario Baseball.
Oh, and no way does this confirm it for sure. Unless we all want to think Lyn is 15 despite being called 18 before, Wario's not Waluigi's brother, or Kaptain K. Rool is not King K. Rool, but a sibling. It's arguable still. It just further confirms DK's not from the arcade games and that's Cranky.

IMO Original Crankey is dead, DK is now the new Crankey, Jr. is the current DK. But thats just me.

People let the past bother them too much. I only care about what the name Donkey Kong means today. He's a hero. That's all that is needed. It doesn't matter who anyone was or who anyone was supposed to be. To me atleast.

(similar to Yoshi...)

Oh, I know full well that even in Japan there's the whole DK/Cranky thing exists. It's just Nintendo themselves seem to ignore it.
Plus, stop bringing DK Jr. into this. He's a separate character. Cranky is repeatedly referred to as DK's grandfather throughout the entire series, and only in DK64 was the "father" thing introduced (screwing up everything).
The question is... assuming the Donkey Kong that appears in DK94 and the Game & Watch Gallery series is supposed to represent the original Donkey Kong, rather than the DKC Donkey Kong, is he ALSO Cranky Kong?

Probably. That's always the way I looked at it. In fact, I always thought the DK appearing in Mario titles was supposed to be Cranky with a Rare-esque design up until DKC stuff started appearing along with him.

I just figured the DKC DK was DK Jr.'s son OR DK Jr., never went further than that, but knew enough to say Cranky was the original DK. That's evident. But does this mean we take Diddy as DK's literal nephew?

Yeah, you don't see people arguing that one quite so often do you The official Nintendo website in Japan also categorically states in a feature on the DK series that Cranky is the original DK, and is Donkey Kong's GRANDfather. As do most of the games (in English and Japanese), but people get hung up on the single mistake in Donkey Kong 64 that said he was DK's father. Of course, not one scrap of evidence exists for DK (Country) being DK Jr. If Cranky is DK's grandfather, then that proves he isn't. But even if Cranky is DK's father, that doesn't prove anything either. Maybe Cranky had more than one son. I would put money on Nintendo's position being against the whole DK is DK Jr. claim. I would also say that even with the nice, neat explanation offered by Snake, it's still screwed up by Baby DK appearing in Yoshi's Island DS.

Well Miyamoto once said, I believe, that Mario had no canon to speak of anyways. So the same goes for DK

I've always accepted that they were all the same character. DK is Cranky and DK Jr, and Chained Kong and The Skeleton Kong from M&L SSS. Because Donkey is not bound by Laws of Time, Ethics or Naming conventions.
Shortly: I Think Donkey Kong's an Ape. And thats really all that matters in the mushroom world.

it's still screwed up by Baby DK appearing in Yoshi's Island DS. Why, couldn't Baby DK really be Baby Cranky who, at the time, was called DK? Would make sense for Cranky to be a baby around the time the Marios were babies, wouldn't it?

The whole time travel thing introduced by Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, and expanded on with Yoshi's Island DS can be used to fix up many of the glaring inconsistencies in the games
