You know what the easiest thing to do is? Take the official line. Yes, it changes sometimes. Yes, sometimes mistakes are made and then reversed. Sometimes you just have no choice but to take the official line and ignore the holes. These are not airtight continuities. For the most part, Nintendo's games rely on being great games, rather than building on a story. The entirety of the Mario series is renowned for its gameplay purity and its shockingly simple and repetitive storylines. Characters are created and then return in increasingly bizarre situations. It's like a pool of elements that Nintendo draws from and adds to with each title to improve the gameplay experience. There were two Donkey Kongs up until Game & Watch Gallery 4 on GBA - Rare's and Nintendo's. Now Rare's has all but usurped Nintendo's, even in games based on the classic DK games (the Mario vs. Donkey Kong titles, for example). These two characters have been used interchangably for a few years, but as Nintendo improved on its consistency just a few short years ago, it would seem Rare's DK has won out as the standard. So where does that leave us now? - Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong.
- For the last 13 years, Cranky Kong's grandson has taken over the role of Donkey Kong. Their relationship has been stated numerous times in numerous sources, and once been ambiguously states as to suggest "son". I do not know if the Japanese translation of Donkey Kong 64 righted this wrong, but assuming as this debate seems to be English-centred, I'm guessing it was fixed.
I'll tell you where it doesn't leave us - and that's with the completely baseless assumption that DK is Donkey Kong Jr. all grown up. Like I said - we have a pool of characters to draw from, and I can guarantee that Nintendo's stance is that DK and DK Jr. can both be drawn upon separately. Mario Tennis 64 would be the best place to start. Of course, Rare's Donkey Kong usurped Nintendo's only because unlike Square-Enix with Super Mario RPG, Rare gave the characters they created for Donkey Kong and Starfox to Nintendo when Microsoft bought them. Since then, Diddy Kong has been a regular in the sports games, and became one of the few Canon Immigrants to Nintendo's Marioverse.

Oh, absolutely, the reclaiming of the Donkey Kong characters from Rare was a decisive factor in all this confusion. Although many of the DK characters have been made more cartoony to fit the Marioverse slightly better.

I always thought the cartoonyness was a design choice on part of PAON, but it also seems they're taking some influence from the awesomely bad DKC TV show.

The DK in all the Mario games could be the original DK(aka Cranky), while the DKC games take place years after the Mario games. I don't recall Cranky, Diddy or any other DKC characters ever appearing in any Mario games. This is assuming you don't consider Sport/Kart/Party games canon.

I always considered every Mario game canon, so my belief in that theory got shot down as soon as I saw the roster for Mario Golf GCN, which I ended up not liking as much as Mario Golf 64 anyway.

I thought we are not allowed debate about Donkey Kong Senior and Junior. Speaking of K.Rool do you guys think that he looks like Emperor Wart from Subcon?

Hmm... no, not really. One's a frog with claws, and the other is a fat crocodile. That's like asking if Mario and Donkey Kong look similar because they're both bipedal mammals

The only other similar thing about them is the crown and the green skin, but you can get by those once you consider K.Rool's other uniforms.

K.Rool looks more like King Koopa from the Super Mario Cartoons than Wart.

Ironically, I always thought King Koopa in the cartoon was supposed to be a mix of both Bowser and Wart.

I'm curious... How do you explain Baby Mario? E. Gadd's time machine from Mario and Luigi 2: Partners In Time offers the best explanation for the babies in the present day.

Then couldn't E. Gadd use his time machine to bring Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong from the future?
