Mr. Game & Watch's colored costumes are references of the Panorama and Tabletop Game & Watch series. Here are some animated GIFs by Andy Cole, a Game & Watch collector. Mario's Bombs Away Snoopy Mickey Mouse Popeye Donkey Kong Jr. Donkey Kong Circus Mario's Cement Factory Mr. Game & Watch's colored costumes might also be references to the SuperColor Game & Watch series. I believe they didn't create a purple costume for him, because it's about as dark as his default color (black). Also, if played in a dark stage with a purple and a black Mr. Game & Watch fighting with or against each other, it could cause confusion on who the players are controlling and who the players are fighting against. Thanks Parrothead! I'm not convinced of the Panorama series as that didn't usd stick characters like Mr. G&W, but that last one is convincing, especially now that he has a lighter blue coloration.

In LCD hand held games like the Tiger hand helds, the Radica hand helds, the Game & Watch series, some game wristwatches and other similar LCD games, I call them LCD shadings. In games with pixels, I call them sprites. In X, Battle Zone, Red Alarm, Starglider 1 and other similar games, I call them wire-frames. In Star Fox 1 and 2, Stunt Race FX, MIDI Maze/FaceBall 2000, Vortex, Star X, Starglider 2 and other similar games, I call them polygons.

I expect Mr. Game & Watch's colour schemes may be a reference to the Supercolor games rather than the panorama series. The Panorama series involved established characters with more distinct colours than those given in Mr.G&W's alternate colours.

I'm thinking it's one of the alternates a player could have in a 4-player version of Mario Bros. on the GBA. Here the colors are reversed on the guy at the far right, but I swear I've seen them the way they are in Smash before. This is the only screencap I could find, sadly. Also: www.mariowiki.com/Image:Mariocard.JPGOrigin for Wario's Pink/Blue costume and maybe the Orange/Green costume for Mario and Wario? www.mariowiki.com/Image:MarioBroscover.jpgAnd Luigi's Blue costume explained?

Mario's not wearing pink in that image, it's just a really bad scan. The same image was used on the arcade game, Famicom release and so on. It's the reverse blue and red Mario colour scheme.
The pink and Blue Wario colours are weird, but I suspect it's just the colour scheme of his WarioWare outfit in dungaree form (although it looks a little brighter).
The green and brown I thought MIGHT be from Mario's Bombs Away up there. But Sakurai actually listed what all of the alternate colours were references to in the original SSB64 Dojo, so it's only characters and colour schemes added since then that we need to worry about.

The pink and Blue Wario colours are weird, but I suspect it's just the colour scheme of his WarioWare outfit in dungaree form (although it looks a little brighter). That's plausible, most likely due to Wario's overalls lacking texture; his WarioWare costume's "Original Wario" colors are darker than his regular yellow-and-purple. So that's why I think Overalls Wario's WW Wario colors are more pastel.
Also, if you look at any official WarioWare art, the pastel colors are pretty apparent.

I'm pretty sure Orange Luigi is Fire Luigi circa SMB3 for the NES, with the black replaced with the right color. Here's a screenshot, and yes, it is Luigi! Fry, was Mario's Foreman Spike listed on the original Dojo? ED:T: Flip, for whatever reason, you're links didn't copy right: Yeah, that is Luigi's blue costume. I shall add that. Major kudos. Yeah, this is where I get Mario's Luigi costume from. I don't think that Wario's is in reference to this, although I will mention it, as they are nearly identical. For comparisons to the above, here are TEi's pics of them"

If you actually go through the options of Wario's costumes, the WarioWare Wario in overalls colors and the Overalls Wario in WarioWare colors actually DO match up in the order.
Also Overalls Wario doesn't lack texture... he just lacks the denim of the other Brothers and WarioWare Wario.

This is the N64 page for color changes: www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_nalj/smash/ChrFrameLayout.htmlRight click, Google translate, click The Secret of the Color Changes. I do apoligize, but this has been Google translated from Japanese. Mario is confimred to have a Foreman Spike costume from Sakurai himself. That makes me smile. ;D ANd more impressivly, Black Falcon is confirmed to be something. I can make out F-Zero 64 in it. Although green Samus is called Production Model Samus, and I've no idea what that means. Anybody know? Or why Bumblebee Ness is called Hanshin Fan? On a more humourous note, Purin is translated as Pudding. Lol!

Or why Bumblebee Ness is called Hanshin Fan? He's actually like that because it's based on a Japanese baseball team called the Hanshin TigersHere's their logo It's funny, as Ness uses a baseball bat. Sakurai must be a fan of baseball ;D Hanshin fan means fan on Hanshin. Get it? It's a joke. I also like how the green Kirby is noted as that for his "gluttonous ways" (get it? Green? Like barf?)

Thanks TV Eye! EDIT: I was on a sprite site earlier researching Kirby sprites, and found out that Super Star era Sleep Kirby does indeed have a green sleep cap. Sorry folks, I thought he had a different colored one like the pic TV Eye posted last page. I'll add him and Green Kirby, who I apperently forgot. Double Edit: Deadpool, I used your Blood Falcon's jacket picture on the Nintendo Wiki: nintendo.wikia.com/wiki/Blood_Falconnintendo.wikia.com/wiki/Image:FalconColors1a.jpgThe page for the .jpg gives appropriate credit, of course. I hope this is ok with you!
