Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I want to add to this based on my experience with the game (now it's finally arrived!).
First of all I'm disappointed that a few of the Final Smashes are practically useless for KO'ing your opponents (King Dedede and DK come to mind).
Also, I am aghast that they've taken time to alter the movesets of some of the characters (for example, Mr Game and Watch's neutral A aerial move is now a 'goldfish bowl' instead of his parasol move that he has in Melee).
Also, none of the new characters are actually any good, save for Ike and Toon Link (and possibly Meta Knight).
Also, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE HOME-RUN BAT? IT NOW COMPLETELY SUCKS!

I've found Diddy Kong, Pit, Lucario and Sonic to all be pretty damn awesome. Snake and Dedede are too, once you get used to them.
I agree that the Home-Run Bat is now useless, though.

From what I've gathered from playing the game - Olimar, Snake and ROB have crappy movesets, Wolf/Lucas are just crappy versions of Fox/Ness. Pokemon Trainer, ZSS, Pit and Diddy are OK, I guess and as for Sonic...I'm not even going to go there..

I was terrible with Olimar and Snake at first, but once you learn their technical movesets, they are really two great characters. I tend to a gree about ROB, but I know a lot of people like him.
While I prefer Ness, have you used Lucas? The kid's a powerhouse.

Wolf/Lucas are just crappy versions of Fox/Ness. Oh now I get it. You're a crazy person.

All respect I once had for Sqrt2 was just lost.
I honestly can not find a single good thing about your post.
And D3's FS is awesome you bastards. XP

Sqrt, all I gotta say is...what?
Lucas and Wolf are twice as strong as Ness and Fox. Also, Sonic is an amazing character. Rack up damage with his specials, then use a smash to knock them far away.
Sonic's smashes are powerful.

I heard once that there were some Assist Trophies in an early demo but were removed from the final version.
How did they find out about this then, and if it was true, were there any pictures/videos as proof?

I've managed to KO someone using Dedede's FS (using a Gordo obviously), but not DK's. It gets bigger and stronger with each consecutive hit Olimar-Crappy moves? What are you talking about? He can deal lots of damage and has some strong air moves Snake-Gernade, C4 and powerful attacks -ROB-everything he does destroys. Anything with flame actually. Wolf- Lucas-You've got to be kidding me. Him? You think the easiest to use character sucks. Despite having some or the strongest Smashes. Not to mention some good airs, specials and strongs. Someone needs to use Lucas Wolf-Despite slow falling he has a lot more powerful attacks, and IMO a better blaster (not to mention his >B is a better recovery move then Fox's) Sonic-SPEED Just use that. Get then to 200 damage and then laugh as they can't keep up. You just need to play these guys more.

A lot of the new characters are too dependent on gimmicks - just like the stages. Rather than finding a character and deciding on how you want to use them, many of them can only be successfully played in one way, which seems to be quite a massive departure for the Smash series.
Let's take the past games. Ness was the only character who really felt like that for me from the start - his floaty moves and dodgy recovery made him feel like a character only the experts would bother to master.
In Melee we also got the Ice Climbers, who can deliver some of the highest damage in the game so long as they're together, but they were so weird to use that few people bothered mastering them. But that was really it for them - everyone else was more versatile.
In Brawl, it simply seems that a lot of the new characters need to be used defensively in order to work. Even when their movesets seem good (or even based on other characters) they just get pounded too easily or don't deal enough damage. One major exception is Lucas, who feels like a more approachable Ness. Diddy Kong is also more of a standard character - and sure enough he's my most-used newbie. Meta-Knight, Pit, Snake, Sonic, Pokemon Trainer and Wolf are one step removed, with standard(ish) moves, but stats that require a more tactical approach. Then we have Wario, Captain Olimar, King Dedede and ROB, who are totally dependent on learning their nuances before you can use them at all!
And sure enough, my most-used characters in Brawl so far are... Sheik, Marth, Captain Falcon and Donkey Kong. Note that none of them are new.

^ Agreed completely on all fronts with Fry. Though I would add ROB to that latter list--he's very awkward to play with. Snake and Sonic are bit on the edge there as well. And, really, the rest of those characters are strange because they don't really have the typical "combo with aerials and tilts, finish with smashes" gameplay. Pit and Meta Knight have NO power whatsoever in hardly any of their moves, and Wolf relies very much on his specials for damage. Pokemon Trainer is just raw gimmick and the only one worth using is Squirtle; the others require massive patience to master (though it IS well worth it--Charizard and Ivysaur are deadly in proper hands).
To answer the question BD had earlier: nobody's really sure if the assists actually existed or not. A lot of sources claimed, for example, Onix, but there was no evidence to support it. The ONLY rumored assist for which there is evidence that it was removed is Rosalina, as her data is still on the Brawl disk. All the others are unaccounted for.
There is soooo much leftover stuff on the Brawl disk it's ridiculous... >.>

ROB is in the latter list. Pokemon Trainer is a mix and match. Squirtle is easy to use, but not strong enough, and then Ivysaur is just weird to use, while Charizard is just the powerhouse. I imagine he'd be better in a 1-on-1. Olimar is the weirdest to use though. Just sooo tricky. Nothing he does seems to be an attack. And I have no doubt that he's good in the right hands (hell, if people raved about Pichu, I daren't doubt someone loves Olimar too!) But just... what?! Flip, could you guide me to the missing data? I've made a halfhearted effort to find it, but apart from the music and characters I've not found anything else.

Rather than finding a character and deciding on how you want to use them, many of them can only be successfully played in one way, which seems to be quite a massive departure for the Smash series. In some ways I see what your getting at, but in a sence I dont think it's true or (better words) definitive. The original 12 were probably the ones who would fit the how you'd want to use them rule. A lot of the latter Melee characters and Brawl all have unique playstyles. But this is becuase it's a fighting game. There is always the basics but the rest of the cast is going to have something too them, and it's inevitable for them to get odder as the cast gets larger. Of course, it could work in reverse as I can see many potential uses to characters like Dedede, Diddy, ROB, Wolf, Ike and so on. It's a matter of preference, and helps if you play lots of people (if you can). BTW, the missing character data was Dr. Mario Mewtwo Roy Toon Zelda/Sheik Plus_min (it's Plusel and Minun but it's abbreviated). Think there is one I forget......
