For the former, it's becuase this game starts 2nd rate Nintendo characters.
The story is here somewhere, but just to repost:
Nick is the start of a TV show which goes under becuase of unpopular characters. They all leave for an island and Nick is trying to get them back for the show. However, something is amidst. Hope that was right.
