Yeah, I wouldn't say it's anything like "hardcore anime" - it's a common Japanese comic routine carried into anime (being pretty much the West's only experience of the Japanese). In that regards, it's no different to slapping people with a fan for comic effect.
And it's not exactly hard to understand. Guy sees girl he likes, blood sprays from his nose like a fountain. Who WOULDN'T find that funny!! ;D

As far as I can gather, it's just a traditional comic routine. Like slipping on a banana peel or falling down a hole. No idea where it started, but I'd be very surprised if it originated in an "anime" (the general Western classification for any Japanese animation produced since the 1970s).
Maybe it started in old comic strips. Maybe it was a famous comedian's routine. But it's been around for longer than what we consider "anime".

I just was thinking that Ayumi could be awesome and very fitting in this game. She comes to the island because he can't resolve any crimes and Nick has to teach her how to deal with the bad guys.

Famicom Detective Club. As in, a game you should learn while you're here.

Japanese only games just don't interest me. I don't really feel like reading about a game I'll never play.

I'm actually fascinated by them and read many of the sites about Japan-only games on NinDB, and browsed through the old pages of the Japanese Nintendo website. It is really interesting to see what the west all missed. I'm interested even if I might never play them. It's part of Nintendo's history! I don't need to want something if I read about it. I don't want to watch "Barney & Friends", but I read what this stuff is about nonetheless.

Not so much odd as just his opinion and choice. I disagree but respect Teev's focus on games he'll be able to play. He's prolly less annoyed about Mother 3, therefore. *cough* Though surprised you never heard of Famicom Detective Club.

It seems kinda selfish to be like, "well I'll never play it, so why should I know about it?"
Although I say the same thing about old TV programs to my friends...
