In January of 2009, Masahiro Sakurai announced that an updated version of Super Smash Brothers Brawl titled "Super Smash Brothers CRITICAL Brawl" was going to be released. He made it very clear that it was an upgrade with a few new characters and stages, along with some other features that didn't make it into the final version of Brawl, last year.
Naturally, the hype train began rolling once again, with fans speculating on who was going to be included and what was going to be added in.
The internet communities were torn, many felt that this was a lazy way for Nintendo to force gamers to buy the same game again, while others couldn't wait for the upgrade. Many argued that new characters should have just been Downloadable content added to Brawl and were not happy with the idea of having to purchase the game again. There was much discussion after this announcement... However, unlike 2007, there were no Smash Bros. Dojo updates, and very little information was given until the game's sudden Japanese release in March 2009.
All new "Critical" exclusive characters had to be unlocked, so the default roster was the same. There were a total of 4 new characters(The method of unlocking them were mostly through Event Mode.)
Many of the original characters got minor balance tweaks or some new animations. In some instances, characters got new Final Smashes to differenciate themselves from other characters.
New stages were added. A few more stages returned from Melee.
Many more Assist Trophies were added (fans complained there was such a small number) along with many new pokemon.
To acompany the new stages, there were a few new songs added to the already huge tracklist. Some songs got moved to other stages.
First of all, the new characters....
(Unfortunately, Sakurai decided to leave all Assist trophies, pokeball pokemon and bosses unchanged... upsetting alot of fans who wanted some of those playable, especially in the case of Ridley)
Mewtwo makes his triumphant return to smash after being replaced in Brawl. Most fans were happy to see him return, though others felt jaded in the fact that of the "new" characters advertised, two of them are actually just Melee leftovers. It also upset people to see that Mewtwo wasn't really improved much in Brawl, and his final smash almost seemed rushed. Graphically, Mewtwo got the same attention as the other characters, and some new animations were added (His entrance is him breaking out of a cloning tube! His taunts were variations of his old winposes.)
His Japanese voice was the same as he was in Melee. They decided to give him an English voiceover this time around. The guy they found wasn't the same as the one from the anime, and opinions are split on the subject.
His moves remained the same as in Melee... but without the ability to Jump cancel, he wasn't used often in competition.
His final smash was dubbed "Psychic". Mewtwo simply floated in the air, holding hands to his head. All opponents would then be lifted into the air, and slammed hard into the ground, most likely KOing them.
Most fans were annoyed at how little detail was put into this Final Smash, compared to the other, more flashy attacks.
Many people felt that Mewtwo was rushed and not given the attention he deserved. He was very close to what he was in Melee, and his final smash was dissapointing. And now with 5 playable pokemon characters (7 actually...) some felt that Pokemon was over-represented. Most though, were just happy to see him back and believed he deserved it.
Snake's codec conversation involved Otacon explaining Mewtwo's birth and how he was a clone of Mew. Snake jokes that he can empathize with Mewtwo's hatred, (being a clone himself) freaking Otacon out a little bit.
Since David Hayter could not be contacted for Critical Brawl... the special taunt is only availible in the Japanese version. (People were PISSED)
A brand new character, Midna was also included in Critical Brawl... making the Zelda count 5 (6 actually).
Midna rode on the back of Wolf Link, but she is always refered to as "Midna" and never "Midna and Link" or anything like that.
Most of Midna's normal A attacks involved the Wolf's bite and claw attacks, or even some tail swipes. Special attacks however, included Midna's "arm" that came out of her head... the homing attack bounced off opponents, which created interesting combos. Their recovery move was a teleport like in Twilight Princess.
Her Final Smash was "Fused Shadow" in which Midna transforms into that spider thing and goes on a screen filling rampage. It was extremely powerful.
People really liked Midna's animations, everything from using items to her throws. Midna's "arm" used items like the hammer, cracker launcher, and super scope, while the wolf used swinging and throwing items.
Her "voice" was the same as it was in twilight princess, and was used in most of her taunts and win poses.
Reaction to Midna was mostly positive, since the character was very well thought out, gameplay wise, and alot of detail was put into the graphics.
The most controversial character added back in was Roy. Most people believed he didn't deserve to come back to Smash Brothers (me included) others felt he didn't deserve to be cut. However, he was added back in with a much more detailed look.
Roy's specials all remained the same as they were in Melee, but his A attacks were different from Marth. Again, the unfortunate part is alot of his attacks were copied from either Marth or Ike... making Roy look even more rushed than Mewtwo. Some attacks were unique (His forward smash, his neutral A combo) while others (mostly his air attacks and throws) were cloned. Luckilly, his Final Smash was unique. (Still kinda lame though). The "Sword of Seals".
His sword sets on fire during Roy's final smash. For a length of time, the sword is extremely powerful.
Putting Roy back into the game caused a bigger stur than ANYTHING else Critical had. It literally split the community. Many felt that if they were going to put ROY and Mewtwo back in, then they should have put Dr. Mario and Pichu back in also. Many were also annoyed with Roy, still being worse than Marth, and offering very little to the game at all but another sword fighter. Many would have prefered the Black Knight, or Eliwood, or anybody else... others were happy as hell they brought him back.
Personally, I wish they left Roy behind as planned. He's useless... that's just my opinion.
And finally, they added a character from the Animal Crossing universe... Tom Nook. Another controversial addition, and to some, the final insult to Brawl. Sakurai explained that fans were complaining that Animal Crossing had so much representation in Brawl but with no playable character... it didn't mean anything. Sakurai admits that he wanted to avoid adding Tom Nook to the roster only because he had no fighting experience.
His fighting animations included all of the things Nook sold at his store... fishing lines, nets, furniture... weird..... shit.....
And his final smash involved all of this at once. I'd go more into detail... but to be quite honest, I don't use this character too often.
Needless to say... Most people were upset.
The game was relreleased but many saw this as a missed oportunity for their favorite characters who missed the boat the first time, only to get 4 characters they didn't care much for in the first place. At this rate, it looked like Ridley, Krystal, Little Mac and many others would never make it into Smash.
I was upset that there were no new 3rd party characters added in the rerelease... so many missed opportunities.....
I was happy with Mewtwo, who isn't that bad if you practice with him.... Midna is awesome, no complaints there.... but Roy didn't need to return, and I'm kinda not sure about Nook.
Why only 4 anyway... would it have killed them to make it 8? I guess that many new characters would have made it like a whole new game, and not just a revision...
Anyway, some older characters were changed as well.... there are no more duplicate final smashes! Something I am extremely happy with!
Dk's final smash is still sucky though... the only thing they changed was they added small icons above DK to tell you when to hit certain buttons. It doesn't make his final smash any better, but it makes it easier to use.
Falco now jumps aboard the Arwing ("Personally, I prefer the air" make alot more sense now!) After flying back and forth shooting lazers, he'll drop a bunch of smart bombs. It's a pretty good final smash.
Wolf now calls for the help of his team, Leon and Panther. Both Wolfens litterally cover the field with Lazar fire while Wolf stays on the ground. It's similar to Falco's... but there is more firepower and Wolf stays on the ground during it. (And no Smart Bombs...)
Toon Link now splits into 4. You can control him while 3 other transparent Link's mirror your every move. The REAL Link can still be attacked, but the mirrors won't dissapear. They remain there for a few minutes. (The color you chose for Toon Link will also be the color of the mirrors.... no Four Sword colors)
Ness no longer uses PK StarStorm... instead he uses PSI Rockin!
A very trippy attack that fills the entire screen... pretty much hurting anybody anywhere. Alot of classic Earthbound sound effects play during this attack... but Ness unfortunately doesn't yell the name of the attack when he does it.
Honestly... it's like... the best final smash in the game. There's no escaping it.
Mario got a new color that makes him look like Dr. Mario. Most were fine with this, but it didn't change his moves or taunts... it was nothing more than another costume. It did change the portrait artwork on the character select screen though... but that's it.
No moves were changed... not even Mario's FLUDD, which upset alot of people. Though there were balance tweaks. For example, Peach now jumps higher on her second jump.... Jigglypuff's Rest does more damage and so on and so forth. The tiers remain though... since many of the top tier characters weren't changed at all (like Meta Knight)
Overall, the game feels more balanced... but I wasn't much of a tournament player so I can't really tell.
One thing they did get right... Assist Trophies. There is alot more variety.
Just to name a few:
Birdo, who spits eggs (like in Melee, they can be grabbed, but Birdo can't be hit by them)
Flint beats people senseless with a 2*4 (Like getting hit with the bat, it's only one swing)
Funky Kong flies around on a hovering surfboard! He lets loose a much appreciated HIIIIIIIII YA when he hits somebody. It's funky.
The Skull Kid from Majora's Mask appears (on TP design though)
After dancing around, the moon begins to fall on the stage! It's almost impossible to avoid, like the lava wave on Norfair... it's one of the most deadly assist trophies. It's cool too!
Everybody's favorite loligoth...Ashley from warioware... still not playable.... appears. She shoots a beam from her hand that turns anybody it hits into a spoon. The spoon can be easilly KO'd and can only hop around until they change back. Luckilly the beam she fires is easy to avoid.
However... the same can't be said for the eggplant wizard, who does much of the same thing.... only by hurling Eggplants. They're Fast and there's alot of them!
There's a few others, like Dark Samus... and a few normal enemies that were in The subspace emisary show up.... but my personal favorite is Team Rocket! When they appear, they give off their patented motto.
The whole point of this assist trophy, is it causes the background to dissapear when they stand in front of a giant R in space. This means you can't really see where the platforms are... and recovering is really difficult. It's a really cool assist trophy though.... it shows up rarely... like Mr. Resetti.
Speaking of which... he says more stuff now. (It seemed like he said the same thing over and over in brawl)
Pokemon are more plentiful too.... now when you throw that ball... there's no telling what will come out! Before you got alot of the same old stuff.... useless Munchlax... useless Gardevoir....
Now there's alot more variety from all 4 generations... including many where were cut from Melee.
Unknown are back, they do the same thing... only now they give off a small ripple effect when they hit... so when the player gets hit alot... it looks really cool.
Weezing, Porygon and Scizor all return.
New ones include Gallade who uses Psycho cut. (A wave of powerful psychic energy goes along the stage)
Pachirisu uses discharge (pretty much like Raikou)
Pichu uses Thunder (it's weak and once it hits itself, it faints. People were pissed about this)
Ditto transforms into your character and attacks as a CPU for a while (finally)
Darkrai uses Dark Void... which puts everyone to sleep. (No matter where they are) Their damage goes up while they're sleeping.
Feebass and Magikarp do the SAME thing as Goldeen. They splash around. However... if the person who threw the ball were to hit Feebass or Magikar, it would EVOLVE into Milotic or Gyrados.
Gyrados uses Dragon Rage... a bunch of tornados circle around Gyrados while it flies above the stage. Milotic uses twister, which does mostly the same thing, but it stays on the ground.
The idea is to not let the person attack the magicarp or feebass. Just keep them away from it somehow.
Kecleon comes out and disapears... all you can see is the red stripe... it moves quickly around the stage, then suddenly strikes with it's tounge.
There are more assist trophies to unlock too... there were no complaints there.
There were only 3 new stages added.... and a few they brought back from Melee. Those are Fourside and Flatzone.
The new stages were Bowser's castle (which is indoors.... there are those cool gates from SMW but you can't grab on to them, and a bridge over lava you can cut but attacking the rope. )
The Twilight Realm from Twilight Princess. (Mostly a flat stage with trippy backgrounds... kinda disapointing... but tourney legal)
And a Gyromite stage... with working pillars that are controlled by switches. The stage is a recreation of the first level.. done in the same style as Mario Bros and Donkey Kong stages. The Nips are also around... and you can throw the turnips to distract them just like you could in gyromite. This is Rob's new stage.
Supspace emissary wasn't touched. The only thing that was included was 1 new stage that included 2 new cutscenes that were removed last time. It involved King DeDeDe... Meta Knight... and the Halberd. It happens toward the begining of the game... but as a flashback.
Other than that... everything was the same. No new modes... no new bosses (I would have liked to see a Kirby boss)... and not much was changed to the trophy/sticker gallery. (Some trophies just got replaced)
Worst of all though, was the online. Not only did they not improve the online play... you can't even play with people who were playing regular Brawl. Nintendo stopped the regular Brawl online... and pretty much forced people to go out and buy Critical. This is why many people were not happy with how Nintendo rereleased the same game.... without utilizing something like Downloadable content, or a patch.
Not only that... but aside from 4 new characters... 3 new stages... and all the other goodies that got added... it still felt like same old brawl. Luckilly... tripping was removed, glitches were fixed... and it's a more solid game... making Critical Brawl the complete version....but not everybody was happy with having to buy the whole thing and unlock everything all over again. And not everybody was happy with their favorite characters not making the cut AGAIN.
Naturally, the hype train began rolling once again, with fans speculating on who was going to be included and what was going to be added in.
