Crawling is fun for intimidation. I like to crawl back and forth and mess with people's heads as Yoshi and Diddy Kong. I swear Yoshi moves faster crawling than dashing, or at least can go into a crawl faster than he can dash. Sometimes, it's just an easier and quicker way of moving. Plus you can crawl backwards and defend with your Dtilt, which is nice in the case of Yoshi.
Another character that should be able to crawl, btw, is Pit. He could in Kid Icarus, dagnabbit!

Mario did a dash attack under those bricks in the official brawl websites, alot like mega man.
And donkey kong should be able to, since he also crawled. And wario should have his original crawl.
And Link was also able to crawl.
And if mewtwo was in, he'd have the perfect crawl.
