You mean, based on his original "walking" animation (if you could call it walking. I mean, as 8bit just pointed out Bowser was gliding around), or based on the little mid-air dance he does while the bridge is collapsing?

After you jump over Bowser and make the dash for the axe, he turns around and just glides along the floor towards you. That bit. It's just his walking animation, but sped up. But the weird glidey feel may have been inspiration!

CrappyCaptureDevice is a YouTube user who made a load of videos about where stuff originally came from in Melee - mainly character moves. Some of them were highly questionable. I'm not convinced by the Bowser thing yet, but it seems as good a place to start as any

He's not as analytical or as much of a perfectionist as you Fry. This is why NinDB works, but it's not to say his method fails either.

CCD mostly covers every possible theory without claiming things as complete fact. Some of his theories are a bit of a stretch, and other times he goes into too much detail on certain things, but still...

For a while, I've considered making a group to do a better "History of Brawl" series of vids. I've done a list of moves that are references, and never finished it but started a list of things that influenced personality in the Subspace Emissary, alongside plain references. The groupings are even arguable as nods, such as the Five Heroes representing five big stars of Nintendo: Miyamoto (Mario), Sakurai (Kirby), Aonuma (Link), Totaka (Yoshi), Yokoi (Pit). Call it a stretch but this struck me as very possible to be true.
If anybody's interested, I'll make a thread with the list.

I say do it as well. I'll be glad to help with it, given the amount of research I put in back when Brawl was first released.

Should they all wall-jump and wall cling as well? No. Crawling is one thing. ANYONE can crawl. Babies crawl. Wall-jumping is totally different. Some characters just don't have the build for it, though. Dedede couldn't crawl because his belly is so huge and his legs are really just his feet. Jigglypuff couldn't crawl because shes got little nubbin limbs, and crawling would technically also mean she would be dragging herself across the floor on her face. Same problem for Kirby and Meta Knight, and in the case of the latter, he'd also have to worry about scuffing up his mask and boots. And Charizard's got really tiny, weak arms.
I'm torn between crawling being something either all humanoid characters ought to do, or it being something based only on game references. I can kind of understand some of them (wasn't Luigi doing that coward's crawl in Mario & Luigi: SSS, when he had to venture out on his own without Mario mid-game? He basically got stuck in a pit and had to see Kamek to get hypnotized into believing he was Mario in order to progress), but others - like Yoshi or Lucario - don't seem to have any sort of cameo value whatsoever. Factually speaking, I think the team just decided to do whatever the hell they wanted, giving crawling to characters where it was very important to their gameplay style (Snake, ZSS) and just picking and choosing after that, occasionally hitting the Cameo Mark but mostly missing (and then landing in that gray area Bowser's stuck in). It's only my personal preference I'm unsure of.

I can't see Lucario crawling mainly due to the big spike sticking out of his chest. Yoshi, however is a different story.

Has Yoshi ever crawled before? I'm actually surprised Mario himself couldn't crawl as he had that ability in SM64.
