Yep...
At least Mario Bros. is straight-forward - but there stories hardly matter...
And Metroid...
Yep...

If Mario is straightforward then where the crap did Baby Mario come from?! I thought he was originally supposed to be Mario as a baby... not... well... a clone! Mario's storyline just doesn't matter. And I think Metroid's is the only one that matters to Nintendo. They've put a lot of effort into Metroid continuity... long may it continue (even in the possible movie).

Well, after playing Wind Waker it seems like Nintendo is trying to make a coherant story out of the Zelda series... or at least they will in most future games.
However, the Mario series is just a hopeless cause and'll never make any sence so there's really no point trying.

I thought TWW made it even harder to work out what was supposed to be going on. Ganondorf was imprisoned in the Dark Realm in OoT, and then he somehow got back and tried to take over the world... and the world was buried in water? And now Ganondorf is... well... I won't spoil it for those who haven't done it yet... but it doesn't obviously lead on to the later games. TWW basically ruins any chance OoT had of being continuous with other Zelda games. I'd say, if anything, Nintendo is making it harder to forge a coherent Zelda storyline. Hopefully TWW2 (teehee) will go some way towards clearing it up. From what I gather, this is supposed to be the TWW Link all growed up.

I have an idea for the site! Its not for the franchise section (sorry!) but a nice companion for the Star Characters area would be (logically) an Arch-Villian Characters section! What do you think?

Now there's the possibility of a game happening before OoT. And the maybe two Ganons. If Link used the Master Sword and Ganon was after the Triforce, then it would be the perfect prequel to LttP, with the maidens and the knights and all, but niether are mentioned at all in the game. WARNING:(The following is definately a SPOILER) Also, Ganon gets sealed in the Four Sword in the end, and he's never sealed in it at the begining of any other game. Although maybe by "sealed in the sword" they mean it's the key keeping him in the Dark World.

I think the Mario Bros. story makes sense perfectly well, but you have to ignore the spin-offs.
Ignore the kart, party, golf, tennis and little puzzle spin-offs - focus on the platformers and RPGs (you know, the actual story-based main stream Mario games) and you have a story that challenges the likes of Shakespeare himself... That was, of course, a joke - for those less inclined to get jokes - but the story does make enough sense.
The Zelda games will never makes sense, so just take each one as it comes.
Yes, I agree with you Fryguy on the Metroid games - carefully constructed storyline - and with Zero Mission the story is retold - I like that in a series.
(Maybe I should colelct Metroid games as well as Mario Bros. ones...)

Nintendo Stars will include villains at some point, probably once I've gotten a load of heroes out of the way. Then villains and secondary characters can join in. But their stories are usually harder to tell, as most of them just kidnap someone then hide in a room containing their one and only weakness. Wart, I'm looking at you!

Maybe multiple Ganons would make life easier. Then each Zelda game could be a self-contained story.
*WARNING: THE REST OF THE POST IS SPOILERS* Ganon was killed in LoZ, and his troops were trying to revive him in AoL. Ganon was killed again in LttP (or Link couldn't have commanded the Triforce), suggesting that at some point (depending on game order) Ganon was revived. Then in OoT Ganondorf was sealed in the Golden Land, which would lead on to LttP's storyline, though at the time Ganondorf did not hold the entire Triforce. TWW is SUPPOSEDLY the next game after OoT with Ganondorf in, according to reports, but in that he's out of the Golden Land (following an earlier escape that resulted in the world being buried), but he ends the game as a rock with a sword in his head at the bottom of the ocean... which most certainly DOESN'T lead on to LttP. So Ganon(dorf) has been killed or thrown somewhere repeatedly, and the only thing that makes sense in the whole series is if OoT is followed by LttP. He is revived in the Oracles, but it's kinda hard to say where in the timeline the Oracles go, or which Link it is.
I am, of course, not including LA, MM or any of the others without Ganon in. I've not played FSA yet, so I can't comment on the storyline in that.
Mario's storyline can't really go anywhere. Mario was born in the Mushroom Kingdom, he mistreats a monkey, saves a princess, goes on holiday a few times and has to fight baddies there, and while he's away saving another princess his castle is nicked by a fat man with a cheesy grin.
Some Mario games are supposed to happen immediately after others (SMW after SMB3, SML2 after SML, SMW2 before everything), but there's not a running narrative... just some kind of scene setting.

Well, I recall Shiggy saying once that he didn't want to ever pin Mario down to any sort of set continuity as it would limit what he could do with him.

Well, there you go - Mario is free of the contraints of continuity and logical progression - nothing wrong with that.
Maybe that means we'll get to see Mario and Luigi do crazy things in the future... like save the world from an army of invading bananas, or race against British retirees and expats on the island of Cyprus ( ;D), or do a Ph.D. thesis on the effects of electricity on marshmallows and orange pants.
The possibilities are truly endless.
OK, I kinda went off the point there... kinda - I'm just agreeing with you guys that the Mario games have endless possibilities if there is no single tight story, but it couls get out of hand and Mario & Luigi could end up going bizarre in the future...

I think their adventure to the Bean Bean kingdom was possibly their wackiest adventure yet. Also, Cackletta's spirit is pigging hard to beat!

I'd like to note that I have a Mario timeline and NOT a Zelda timeline. The former makes a ton more sense than the latter.

the zelda games have a couple of pairs you can put together, LoZ/AoL OoT/MM and of course the oracles games... but no real continuity.

Yes, that is correct.
In M&L I cannot beat Fawful at the end, so I am unable to face the Cackletta ghost...
As for Mario Bros. - YI, YS, the early DK games, MB, SMB, SMB2, SM3, SMW, SM64, PM, LM, SMS, M&L, Mvs.DK...
Fit in as you see fir the 6 billion spin-off titles and there you have it!
(by the way, I know that timeline is crappy and simple and crappy - it took me 10 seconds to do, so please don't complain... ;D)
