To the few who venture into the forums, I ask a favour. I've been working on the Donkey Kong franchise page. More specifically, I've added a brief history of the series (with official artwork) and shuffled the layout about slightly. What do you think about the history? How useful do you think the inclusion of direct links to cameo pages is? What else would you like to see happen in the franchise section?

The DK franchise page looks great! The history is an excellent addition (one that I hope will find its way to other franchise pages), and the direct links to cameo pages is very helpful.
All it needs now is for the DK rap to play when the page is accessed.
Or maybe not.

Looking good that background gives the soulless list of games a bit of heart ;D But won't that history section have to be changed again and again to stay accurate? That might be a bit time consuming for you if you decide to extend that feature to all franchises...

I thought about that. Some franchises will be fine, as they update very infrequently, or not at all any more (such as all of the non-main franchises). So really it's only the big franchises that will cause problems (especially Pokemon, where a couple of new Pokemon are shown way in advance, but no concrete information on the game appears until moments before the game is released). But every time a game is released in a franchise I have to update the franchise page anyway, so it's not that hard to edit a sentence or two to bring it up to date. If it really becomes a problem I'll stick a date at the bottom so people can see how out of date it is.

The Franchise sections are very well laid out.
The only thing I might do is shorten the text at the beggining to just include a breif early history and a description of the main premise of the game series, so that I wouldn't have to update to much, just add games to the list.
Not to say that the info is bad , just that I would be to lazy to update the section all the time if I were you, which I'm not so never mind.

It looks great!
Except...
"The game wasn't as well received due in part to an overabundance of necessary item collection, and the notorious DK Rap."
People don't like the DK Rap? Why? It's my second favorite rap song. (The PokeRap being my favorite, of course.) I listen to it all the time...

Only the future history would need to be changed as it becomes the past...
As for the DK Rap, yes, everyone hated the DK Rap. Probably even you. It wasn't until the speedy, manic version in SSBM that people started liking it. Listen to the original DK64 version... it's still too slow for a game's startup song, it's painfully sung, and the lyrics are still... well... awful. Coconut shells and pineapple smells? Good lord!
I once read an interview with a famous British comedian. He said that, in his game, once you start rapping then you are no longer funny. I guess that applies to British videogame developers as well.

Ah, thanks for the info. I'll have to listen to the original sometime.

That's okay... I've made a list of heroes to work on as well, so expect some more in the near future.

It's a great addition - something that adds a lot of value to the site...
If you do (and I'm sure you've thought about it) a Mario Bros. section - in my personal opinion (take it as you will) I think you should focus on the story or series-based games, and not include the 10 billion other titles that are spin-offs that clutter up the history and make it hard to keep track...
But that's juts me talking...

Well, the only Nintendo franchise that keeps to a consistent storyline is the Metroid series. The others either become incredibly convoluted (eg. Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong) or have none to speak of whatsoever (most of the rest).
But I would like to have a bit more on the series storylines. I'm just doing a lot of thinking on how best to pull it off without upsetting too many fanboys. I've already had some emails from people not very happy with my ordering of the Kid Icarus games... the second one is apparently a precursor to the first, but absolutely none of the games say that, or manuals, or anything at all.
Frankly, they could go either way quite happily. But I prefer not to incur the wrath of those who take these things a little too seriously.
Any ideas on how to get around this problem?

By mentioning a few of the more popular theories, and then saying which one you personally think is the most logical/accurate.
That way you can let people make up their own minds.

I'd stear clear of Zelda - too many people think of the story in different ways... I just plain gave up and now I only really play old Mario Bros. games...
With Mario Bros. maybe keep out the kart, party, golf, tennis, and other spin-offs - they are more party games than anything else...
In the end, do what you want - who cares what "fanboys" think - it's your interpretation after all... right?

Well, Legends of Zelda (NinDB affiliate) has a good set of timeline theories, including a few ideas I sent in to try and explain the discrepancies between OoT and MM. I like it when a storyline is laid out, which qualifies me to be a fanboy, but I really don't care as much as those that have made "Nintendo Fanboy" a swearword. These are the people like over at Donkey Kong: Jungle Vine who get really pissy if anyone disagrees with THEIR interpretation of DK's relationship to Cranky. The Mushroom Kingdom (another NinDB affiliate) felt their wrath lately with their own suggestion that Cranky is DK's grandpa! "GOOD LORD NO!" shouted DK:JV! "He's definitely his FATHER! Look, Rare said so once, and Nintendo Europe say so on their website! So it's DEFINITELY TRUE!" - flying in the face of all the counter-evidence that says TMK is right as well. But they hate pre- and post-Rare Kong games, so they're clearly insane. Anyone who doesn't like the arcade Kong games (and who consider Banjo-Kazooie and Conker members of the Kong universe because they both appeared in Diddy Kong Race) don't really deserve to be taken as seriously as they think they deserve. Zelda is convoluted. With every new Link comes the need to completely rewrite the timeline. OoT comes first, but it can't be telling the story of the Imprisoning War, unless ALttP slots between that and TWW (the sacred seal is supposed to be in the same place in both games... but by TWW the original seal is buried under the sea). But Ganon threatens to destroy the descendents of the Seven Sages, which IS what he does in ALttP. So maybe it goes OoT-ALttP-TWW...? I bet others have died for suggesting such a thing. I don't care about Kid Icarus's order. But I do think Starfox 64 is a "retelling" of the original, and not a sequel. So many things to worry about for no good reason
