Seeing is how fanon discussions always seep into regular topics, I thought it fitting to make a thread where we can all nerd out and put forth crackpot theories about continuity-related things that don't really matter in the long run, even for things that have no official canon such as Mario.
Just remember, no sarcastic posts or anything like that. The reason those happen is because a subject matter like this always pops up where it doesn't belong. I made this thread so it can finally have a place to go.
I'll start with some ideas I've made up about Mario's universe:
About Humans in the Mushroom Kingdom:
-Humans in the Mushroom Kingdom are rare and typically have super-human abilities. This is pretty obvious given that most if not all of the the human characters take precedence over the non-human ones in some way, and their abilities usually exceed that of normal people. The only exceptions are the humans in Mario Golf, but I'll touch on that later.
-Rainbow Road acts as a highway across time and space. You can access the “human world” via the Rainbow Road, as evidenced by Mario Golf and Tennis GBC. That’s where those games take place, and it’s where all those human characters came from. It’s a possibility that any and all humans that live in the Mushroom World descended from people from the human world that discovered the portals.
About Mario and other central characters:
-Mario is older than Luigi by exactly one game because he was released from the stork's mailbag at the beginning of Yoshi's Island while Luigi was released at the end. This is why Mario is considered the older brother.
-Wario and Waluigi were old friends of Mario and Luigi that slowly lost their sanity after they failed to achieve the same success as them. This is why they dress like them and call themselves variants on Mario and Luigi's names (which may not even be their real names at all), and why they act so bizarre and crazy.
-Peach's parents are dead and the only way she can become queen is to get married, hence why she's still referred to as a princess.
-The Mushroom Kingdom isn't actually ruled by Peach. She's just a figurehead and the nation is actually governed by the Prime Minister, as seen in the Mario RPGs. This would technically mean it's not a Kingdom, but the United Kingdom works the same way, so...yeah.
-Peach's parents were an inter-species marriage. Her grandmother was a Mushroom Person, and Lakitu mistook Toadsworth for her grandfather, which means he's also a Mushroom Person. This means that one of her parents must be a Mushroom Person and the other must be human, otherwise she wouldn't be human herself.
-Granted, children in the Mushroom Kingdom are delivered by the stork rather than born biologically, but it's already been proven through Bowser and DK that a child always ends up looking like the spitting image of one of their parents, which probably means that Peach's mother was human and her father was a Mushroom Man.
-Alternatively, you could say that she was adopted, but that's not likely, unless children actually are born biologically and only the ones dropped off by the stork are destined to become superheroes one day, which could be the case if YIDS's ending is anything to go by. This point also acts as alternative to my first point up there.
- The little green Yoshi from Yoshi's Story is the current Yoshi, and the green Yoshi from Yoshi's Island was his father. After the events of Yoshi's Island, Baby Bowser stole the Super Happy Tree which caused the original eight Yoshis to fall into depression. Their offspring were still eggs when this happened which is why they didn't get affected. (this is all seen in the game's intro).
-Unless the Baby Yoshi from the ending of Yoshi's Island DS is the current Yoshi, and Yoshi's Story happened between then and the first YI.
-The Mushroom Kingdom has an official army, but they're all too chicken to fight against Bowser's forces, hence why they have to rely on Mario and Luigi every time.
-Mario's super sized state is actually his natural form. You can tell his shrunken form isn't natural because he looks squashed. It’s probably caused by Bowser’s magic.
There's more to come after this, but I'd rather not clog the first post with a massive wall of text, plus I'm eager to hear what the rest of you are gonna say.
About the many species of the Mushroom Kingdom:
-The caps that Mushroom People have on their heads are hats, but they're still born with them. It's evident that you can be born with clothes on in the Mushroom Kingdom. Koopas have removable shells, Yoshis are born with shoes and saddles, and Mario, Luigi, Peach and Wario were all born with their respective headgear already on their heads.
-There are male and female Birdos, but all the males still dress and act like females. Either that or they're all male but dress like females in an attempt to compensate.
-Likewise, there are male and female Yoshis, and only the females can give birth. The "eggs" that the male Yoshis lay are really just turds covered in calcium shells. Their abnormally fast digestive tracts make it apparent that Yoshis have unusual physiology.
-Boss drones such as the Big Bob-omb and the Goomba King/Goomboss are just ordinary drones enchanced by Bowser's magic. He said in Paper Mario that the Goomba KIng was an ordinary Goomba who begged him to turn him into a king. This also explains how the bosses are able to come back so many times: every time Mario beats one, Bowser just makes a new one. There's probably more than one Petey Piranha if what happened in SMS and PiT is to be believed.
-Shy Guys and Birdos and such hail from Sub-Con, but ties between Bowser's royal family and Wart's royal family allowed the Koopas to employ them as minions, which explains why they appear all over certain Mario games.
-Though to be fair, the Shy Guys seem like a fairly independent clan complete with their own cultural quirks (wearing those outfits). They probably left Sub-Con and went to pursue other opportunities.
-About Goombas: They are specifically truffles, not just mushrooms. That's why they're brown and shaped slightly differently. They’re also actually highly intelligent as evidenced by Goombario and Goombaria, and even posses some form of psychokinesis so they can lift things without arms. Also, most Goombas are actually stronger than a normal human (Goombario's head was supposedly as hard as a rock), it’s just that Mario is super enough to stomp them, and they aren’t anywhere near as strong as Bowser’s other minions.
-In addition, Goombas tend to vary in appearance depending on which region they're found in. In Dinosaur Land, they resemble berries instead of truffles, on Isle Delfino they're Strollin' Stus, and in the BeanBean Kingdom they're Beanies.
- Tatanga and his people live on the moon part of the Space Zone, and their energy source are the 3-Up Moons from SMW, similar to how the Piantas and Nokis of Isle Delfino have Shine Sprites.
-Katsini from Wario’s Woods might actually be one of Tatanga’s people from the Space Zone, given how much he resembles him. He probably moved to Earth and became a magician/aristocrat/whatever he’s supposed to be dressed like.
-Bob-Ombs are a race of mechanical beings that can explode and reform themselves infinitely. Bowser also manufactures drone Bob-Ombs that only listen to him. They can't reform after exploding. They're the ones that constantly have wars against the good Bob-Ombs, like in Super Mario 64.
-The clouds with eyes are actually sentient. This is evident because Lakitus train them and ride around on them like steeds.
-Boos are their own species and not the spirits of any dead beings. It’s already been illustrated that they can combine to form larger Boos, and that you can’t technically kill them because they’re ghosts.
About Bowser and the Koopa tribe:
-Bowser Jr. is a biological clone of Bowser made to act as his heir. It makes sense given how much he resembles him, though this would also seem to contradict the point I made above about Peach looking just like her mom. Remember that we still have DK for that, and that Bowser Jr. not only looks like Bowser, he also acts just like he did when he was little. DK doesn't act a thing like his father (most of the time), and there's nothing to say about how Peach acts in relation to her mom, given that she's not officially part of the games.
-The Koopalings are likely Bowser's actual children, because otherwise there wouldn't be such a variation in apparence nor would there be a presence of daughter. Chances are Queen Koopa had either blue or rainbow hair, or some of the Koopalings dyed their hair a different color. It's pretty obvious that some of them got Bowser's looks while others got their mother's looks.
-The Mini-Bowsers from Mario Party are an army of mass-produced clone grunts like in Star Wars. They probably resulted from Bowser's first attempt to make Bowser Jr., and afterward he resorted to making more of them in an attempt to boost his ranks and fulfill bullshit tasks like what goes on in the Mario Party games, which is why they never appear anywhere else.
-For the record, Queen Koopa is probably dead, and the reason Bowser wants to marry Peach so badly is because he wants a new wife and thinks she’s the best choice. This is also probably why he lied to Bowser Jr. about Peach being his “mama”.
-The reason the Koopalings don’t appear much anymore is because they grew up and went off to college. Probably the same college Bowser, Wart and K. Rool all went to when they were young tyrants.
-Bowser actually does die sometimes after you beat him at the end of a game. This can be inferred from the way Madame Clairvoiya said King Boo must’ve “revived” Bowser in Luigi’s Mansion. He controls a portion of the 1-Up Mushroom market to alleviate that.
-Bowser uses various forms of magic to change his size in each game. The problem is that growing too large causes him to act dumber, which is why he usually stays small.
About key locations:
-Sub-Con is an actual place where dreams are made via the machine in Wart's throne room (which explains why there were vegetables flying out of it during the final battle), but you can only access it by dreaming and being summoned by the Sub-Conians. Mario was brought there by them in order to save Sub-Con.
-Alternatively, you could say that the door in the cave Mario encountered was a real doorway to Sub-Con, and the whole thing was not triggered by dreaming at all.
- The Mushroom World isn't as large as some people think. One example: Desert Land, Kalamari Desert and Dry Dry Desert are all probably supposed to be the same place due to them all being called "Kara Kara Desert" in the Japanese version.
-Mario Land from SML2 is actually Mario's equivalent of Superman's Fortress of Solitude. He goes there to take breaks and keeps a museum of all his accomplishments inside Castle Mario. The enemy drones were good guys until Wario showed up and brainwashed them. Eventually Mario Land was rebuilt into a theme park, as shown in Mario Party 2.
-Toad Town is the capital city of the Mushroom Kingdom because Peach's Castle is located there. Mushroom City is a popular tourist spot. Toad's Turnpike and the Mushroom Bridge are an interstate loop around the Kingdom.
-The Star World from SMW is a central crossroads for the various areas located in space mentioned above.
-The events of the DK arcade games and DK ’94 took place at Big Ape City, which was apparently Mario’s first stint as a construction worker. The place has since been taken over by the Kongs.
About the lay of the land:
-Most Warp Pipes are either ordinary tunnels or elevators like those ones in PiT, while some of the rarer ones are actually portals disguised as regular pipes.
- The reason there was nothing but painting rooms in the castle in Super Mario 64 is because Bowser used the Stars' power to twist the castle into a maze so Mario couldn't get to him. He then sealed off all the doors so Mario couldn't get the stars back from the enemy worlds inside the paintings and reverse the spell.
-Peach's personal golf course from Mario Golf Toadstool Tour is located in her backyard. It was built over Royal Raceway after the Mario's Star golf course from Mario Gold 64 was closed down.
-The reason Peach’s Castle and its surrounding estate looks different in every game is because she keeps getting it renovated for every new occasion. Given how many times it gets damaged and how filthy stinkin’ rich she must be, I’d say that’s pretty understandable.
-Raphael's planetoid in Yoshi's Island wasn't the moon, nor was the moon in the Space Zone in SML2. The only real moon is in Paper Mario 2, which actually has sufficient atmosphere to breathe on.
About the time frame:
-The spin-offs happen in between the other games on the characters' off-time. The reason Bowser is in them is because he wants victory over Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom in every way possible, including sports.
-The Baby characters are present in the spin-offs due to accidentally slipping into E Gadd's time holes.
- Donkey Kong '94 for Game Boy is a remake of the arcade game. The ending shows Mario entering the Mushroom Kingdom.
About Stars and the theology of the Mushroom Kingdom:
-Rosalina is the Mushroom World equivalent of God. She created the universe and everything in it. All the celestial bodies in spaces start out as Lumas and are raised by Rosaline until they’re fully grown. The passing of the Comet Observatory is one of the Mushroom Kingdom’s national holidays.
-As for the Stars themselves, the Star Kids and Star Spirits from Star Haven exist to grant people’s wishes. When a wish is granted, it’s made into a shooting star on the Star Road and
sent down to Earth where it lands on Star Hill. Shooting Star Summit is the gateway between the Earth and Star Haven.
About items and power-ups:
-The Power Stars/Starmen are magical relics that can grant immortality for a brief period of time. Peach’s Castle is so big it needs 120 of those suckers to keep it protected.
-Mushrooms are edible and either recover Mario’s health or bring him back to his normal size if he’s been shrunken. There are a wide variety of mushrooms in the Mushroom Kingdom (no duh) and they aren’t always easily distinguishable from one another.
-The Fire Flower can symbiotically bind itself to Mario’s suit, which changes its color and gives him the ability to shoot fire out of his hands (kind of like the black Spidey suit). Sometimes they come in the round variety (like in NSMB) which is probably native to the Mushroom Kingdom, or the tulip variety (likely native to Dinosaur Land and Mario Land). The ones in Mario Land seem to make a feather appear on Mario’s hat rather than change the color of his suit. I can’t come up with an answer to that one.
Just remember, no sarcastic posts or anything like that. The reason those happen is because a subject matter like this always pops up where it doesn't belong. I made this thread so it can finally have a place to go.
