My, oh my...I'm so glad I didn't get involved in this bedlam. It's times like this where I have to agree with Underwear's avatar. You heard the man. The Smash forum here has ttly lost it. And now for Fry's say on the matter. It's that simple; be wise and keep out of it.

I'd like to see what Fry or Underwear think of this matter, because I really don't know what to say at this point... Personally I've avoided posting anything in this thread because its been epic levels of stupid since page 1. I haven't read it recently so I don't know what knew piece of retardation has been posted, but I can say with confidence, without even reading it, that whatever argument has been put down, by whatever person it is, is retarded. And all counter arguments against it are also retarded. The Smash Bros forum is now where sane rational arguments go to die. And as that argument dies it has defecated retardation on everything around it. And I'm out. Bye bye. Oh, I see, rather than try and fix it you ignore it until you no longer can, then attack it. Great job, Pharisee. You have no right to complain if you've done nothing to help. What's worse, you try to put the fire out with a flamethrower. It doesn't work, you just end up causing a bigger fire. As for the rest of you, if we could PLEASE get back on topic and start talking about characters we see as likely choices for a future Smash game, I'd be very appreciative.

Well, I tried to explain in my tl;dr posts how I noticed that there are usually 12 new characters added in each game and how Nintendo markets their franchises outside of SSB games could affect the SSB rosters, but its ridiculous according to some people here. I just wanted to explore a possible connection between Nintendo's marketing and SSB rosters.

Don't worry, that is a valid point in this thread. It's interesting to me to note that, based on the +12 idea, from Brawl to SSB4 would have 47 characters (using a roster space as the definition of a character) if it followed the rule strictly, and as Smash hasn't been exactly strict on that historically, it would be around 50.

I'd say they should cut down. I don't want to be alive when 25% of the 107 character roster is cloned.

47 seems plausible to me, maybe a 10x4 grid on top of the 7x1 bottom row. But if we replace Ike and Lucario with a new FE Lord and a 5th gen Pokemon, we get 45 (a perfect 9x5 grid like I've mentioned many times on this thread). So, it could be somewhere between 45-50, though it could also be between 44-49 if we still have the random select. So, the bottom line, I think its reasonable to expect at least 44-50 characters in SSB4, hopefully if there's one.

Which we likely will, though it's also possible that the Random Select won't be on the grid. And which we likely will, as Lucario and Ike may be obsolete by that time.
When I think about it, it's just as logical to say that Lucario replaced Pichu. I mean, Pichu was the mascot of the 2nd Generation, while Lucario was the 4th Generation mascot.
Eh, whatever.

Also, I had some posts here about how I sorted all the characters into four categories as another way to balance the roster: main characters, secondary characters, retro / Japan-only characters (aka obscure characters), and third party characters. I even included percentages, too. Have you given that some thought?

Eh-heh, I kinda forgot about it. ^_^()
EDIT: Did some looking, found it. Can I ask you to draw the lines on retro / cult / Japan-only and main characters? Because characters like Marth and Pit do technically fall under both categories.

Oh, yeah, I listed Pit and Marth under Retro / Japan-only because at the time Brawl came out, Pit is retro and Marth is Japan-only. But come SSB4, Marth is not classified under Retro / Japan-only, but now under Main (contemporary and international) because he had a new game on the DS this year. As for Pit, only time will tell if there is a new Kid Icarus game between now and SSB4, so for now he's under Retro / Japan-only.

Ah. Well, my take is pretty solid, then. Around 7 new main characters sounds appropriate under any circumstance between now and SSB4's release, whether or not we get 7 new main series in or not, but we'd have to HAVE 7 new main characters, which is where some debate would stem from. 5 secondaries seems appropriate too, but if we don't have 7 main characters, we'd have to bump this number, along with the +5 for retro / cult / Japan-only series. Final verdict: I concur that 7-5-5 is pretty good, but only if there are enough characters to fill those shoes.

Is it safe to assume everyone from the first three games will be back? I know Jigglypuff was on the chopping block... but now she feels... canon, somehow.

I'd say so, yes. My evidence? The fact that in Melee, Ness was going to be chopped out for Lucas (cancelled because of whatever it was that happened to Mother 3.) In Brawl, Lucas joined up, having finally had his game released, but they kept Ness. That's enough for me to believe that the original 12 are permanent fixtures in Smash Bros.

I had an idea that might make a good addition, and could MAYBE replace the "Masterpiece" thing.
Legacy Mode (or some similar title): You play through classic stages based on the original games the characters came from, all rendered in pixel-perfect detail, You'd have Super Mario Brothers World 1-1, Donkey Kong Country's Jungle Hi-Jinx, The Ice Climber mountain, etc.
