All right, try this one...
Clue: This is a platform-action game for the NES. You play as a samurai character, and at the beginning of the game, you choose one of three items that will each enhance your abilities in different ways. You fight enemies with a sword, but you also have a dog that you can send out to attack. Also, you can collect money from beaten enemies and use it to buy items at a shop.
Guess the game!

The only thing I can think of is Master Chu & the Drunkard Hu, never played it. Don't think it has a dog though.

Here's the next official clue.
Clue: This 16-bit adventure game is similar to Prince of Persia or Out of This World, except it takes place on a tropical island, and the main character starts off as a total nerd.
Guess the game!

Clue: This game was for the original Game Boy. It was an overhead shooter like Commando, but the levels were explorable and you could only move one screen at a time like in the original Legend of Zelda. There were two characters, a male and a female, that you could switch between during the game, or you could use the Game Link cable for the 2-player mode, and each player could explore the level independently.
Guess the game!
