Nobody says poh-NEE do they? Just to propose a justification... It may also depend on the intention behind the name or how it's interpreted. One theory says Ponyta could be derived from "ponytail", and another says it could be from "pony" + "bonita" ("pretty" in Spanish and Portuguese). "Bonita", as you may have heard in Madonna's "La Isla Bonita", is pronounced boh-NEE-tah, so maybe the latter is what the sound managers of the 3-D battle games used. Who knows. |

I've always said Ponyta like that. That's how it looked to me when I first got into Pokemon at age 7, and that's how it still looks to me. I always thought generation 1 had easier to say names than the subsequent generations, so its odd to see people arguing about it.
Also, I never considered bonita as an origin for the name. OR Ponytail, for that matter.

You know when you say the word fast, POH-nee and poh-NEE don't sound that different.
When playing Pokemon Stadium I never really noticed anything. I guess I never really considered emphasis an issue, just the Ays and Ahs.
For example if they said Poh-KNIT-tah then I would really notice that!
Its like the whole Pok-EE-mon VS Pok-EH-mon VS Pok-AY-mon

I just pronoune it, you know, ポケモン since that's how you get the word "Pokémon" in the first place.

An accented e (é) is not pronounced "AY".
The Japanese pronunciation is easy enough, thanks to their delightfully easy to follow and difficult to interpret language... Po-keh-mon... literally pronounced the same as the beginnings of pocket and monster... "pocke-mon".
I still say Poh-keh-mon though, perhaps out of loyalty to the way it is pronounced in pretty much all US-translated media. But half the characters in the show say "poh-kay-mon", so I guess there is no standard, and this whole debate is pointless.

No, seriously, I pronounce it "Poh-KEH-mahn." That's how everyone basically says it. Yeah, people extend the é until it sounds like they're saying "Poke a mon," but it's still the same basic sound. Just alot harsher. One that annoys me is "Pahk-uh-mahn." How lazy is that?
