Everyone hated Metroid Prime before it was released. Just throwing that out there.
As for Sakamoto and the Metroid story... look at Nintendo's first-party catalogue and tell me one other game series that has a story as straightforward as Metroids. Each game relies on other games in the series, new games explain things from earlier games, and generally it all ties together into one coherent storyline. It's like the anti-Zelda.
The Prime series is a side-story, but less of a side-story than Prime Hunters. It still explained things, such as the Aurora units, it explored the lore of the Space Pirates and the Chozo, but the rest of its story about the Metroid Prime / Dark Samus was largely disconnected from the main storyline.
The question is... If this story falls between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, does this mean there are no Metroids in it? Or is this what the "Other M" refers to?

I don't see anybody hating on the game itself. Just the storytelling. XD

Mysterious Metroid Other M Photo with a mysterious guy. metroid-database.com/?p=newsarch&id=345It was revealed in this footage from San Diego Comic Con. Its on 0:38. Who do you think this Ryo Hazuki looking guy is? I guess a close friend and/or someone from the GF. Maybe Adam's son or one of his soldiers who died or something? Could be a one-night stand ex-boyfriend.

Dude, that's it! Lan Di is a space pirate from the future who disguised himself as a Chinese gangster and traveled back in time to 1986 to obtain the Dragon Mirror. Ryo eventually follows him back thru time and meets up with Samus in the future who turns out to be Nozomi with bleached hair! It all makes sense now! Who would've thought that Metroid and Shenmue were part of the same fictional universe?

I like how everyone's writing off the new characters as a terrible idea based on the fact that we don't already know who they are.
I'm interested in how they fit in, since we heard this game is still going for the sense of isolation Metroid games usually have.

Having read a good chunk of the manga lately (which I like a lot, and wish Nintendo would license it to some NA distributor to sell here), I've seen what Japan knows about Samus, and dammit, I like her more now. The way she freaked out seeing Ridley after so many years...that was hard to read because I can understand the situation. The art was well done, too. When she pulls herself together, she's a much stronger, focused and awesome character to me than the emotionless shell that America's been handed. I also think Ridley is even more badass and sinister than I did before, which I'm stoked about. So thanks for sharing those, Qu. I like my favorite franchise that much more now. As for the game, I'll reserve judgment until I play it. I don't think Sakamoto's going to screw over a character he's carefully been developing since her creation. I look forward to it.

Nothing quite new but here is little tidbits about the Other M development. - Always had plans for a deep story - Game development became much different than the game that was first conceived - Because of the advancement in technology/development, Sakamoto has been able to express the story himself, original design team has encapsulated - Game is a “romantic” project for Sakamoto - Ideas thought of by Sakamoto that were formed in past years are in the game I'am sure by romantic they mean that the game means a lot to Sakamoto, which is true. All the other tidbits in here is about NdCube and the Mario Party series, it sounds like the latter is in limbo right now. Oh well, its fine by me if the games will be as good as over. www.nintendoeverything.com/46555/

Augh, large image is large! Superpoppybros, can you shrink it or just post a link? It's stretching the page like woah.
Anyway, the more I hear about the game, the more mixed my feelings become. I've heard tell of regenerating health and ammo - that combined with the soldiers makes me think more and more of Halo. Actually...more like Gears of War. I hope to God that Higgs isn't the new Cole Train...
Granted, Fry's right when he said a lot of people hated Prime when it came out, because it was a complete genre change - but once it came out and began circulating, it proved itself. It had the same Metroid feel - alone on a planet full of hostile life, Space Pirates, Metroids, hunting for hidden passages, rooms or catacombs to find power-ups...the only difference was that it was from Samus' point of view. So, we'll see.
A friend of mine said it best: I'm going to wait until I hear a solid review from Not IGN before I pick it up.

Fixed it, sorry about that. I have forgat how to shrink large pics to small ones so now I just posted the link this time. Did the same right now in Last Story thread page 3. Here is some new details. MDb:"Nintendo has lifted their media embargo for Metroid: Other M, giving us some brand new screenshots as well as allowing press who got to play the game this weekend to talk about their experiences. Though the version played was not a final build, play experiences are revealing many new things, including: •Speed upgrades increase the rate of the charge beam. •The game is mostly gameplay NOT cinematics. As in, an hour or more stretches without a single cutscene. •That said, there will be small real-time cutscenes (similar to Prime), but these seem to be thinly placed. •You cannot skip cutscenes.(Not sure about successive play-throughs though) •You can dodge while in first person. •Deactivating holographic generators reveals new areas to explore. •The music seems to be mostly atmospheric, but should include lots of remixes. •The auto-aim function can hit enemies from very far away, but missiles have a limited range. •Samus turns slowly in first person. •There will be sequences that can result in instant-death (such as one involving an elevator). •There are both save points and continue points. Continue points occur more frequently, and usually right next to difficult sequences (such as the said elevator sequence). metroid-database.com/news-post.php?id=348EDIT: A few more details. - Continue points appear more frequently than save points - Continue points usually appear before difficult sequences like the elevator sequence - Armadillo-like boss can roll up into a ball and attack you - Boss is vulnerable when he isn’t rolled up like an armadillo - There are enemies that will be invisible before they attack - First-person will allow you to find the invisible enemy’s energy signature - Shoot the invisible enemies so that they will become visible - A “ping” noise can be heard after all enemies in an area are defeated which will help you find hidden pick-ups - Even though a pick-up could be in a certain room, you need to find a different room to access the original room to obtain it - You’ll see a summary of the game’s story so far, recapping what you’ve seen and done as the game loads from a save point - Cutscene in the game has a chicken-like creature, leaps out of the shrubbery, stares with black eyes and wags its tail - one cut-scene features a strange chicken-like creature that leaps out of shrubbery, stares at you and waggles its tail www.nintendoeverything.com/46599/

Here are Nintendo's marketing plan for the game in UK - 'high-impact' TV campaign - starts two weeks before the game's release - runs for a month - commercial will be shown on terrestrial and satellite channels - online campaign running at the same time - online campaign featuring banners, video ads and more - online ads will target game and sci-fi sites - trailers shown in movie theaters through September - POS display in stores www.gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=132723Sounds great, also a UK artist guy Joe Roberts (who is apparently better known as GeoDex on Deviant art) has made pretty cool looking renders of Samus, and another new one is on the recent cover of ONM. metroid-database.com/news-post.php?id=353www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/article.php?id=19147
