First off, this isn't that Smashboard project where they tried to turn Brawl into Melee with wavedashing. This project know as "Balanced Brawl" is too balance or tweak characters/stages to make them better/fairer. After reading it on Smashboards, it's actually quite interesting to see. It's quite interesting to hear about chaingrabs getting removed and certain stages having their scrolling speed slowed down.

Meh, maybe its just me but I would rather be trying to improve my Brawl skills and learning how to counter chain grabs and keeping up with the scrolling stages than trying to make the game easier for me to win by removing chain grabs and slowing down the scrolling stages.

I suspect this project is largely to do with balancing characters and stages for competitive play, rather than for the lay gamer who probably wouldn't notice a +1% damage bonus or has never encountered an unlimited chain attack.
I think it's interesting that they've taken each step very seriously, even though they are very small tweaks across the board. It's impressive to know that even such small changes can make a game play differently. It will also be interesting to see if there are further exploits cropping up for those using this tweaked game.

To balance out a Smash Bros, thing #1 to do: Allow some public beta testing.
Seriously, I believe one reason that people see the game as unbalanced is that they don't have enough players of all different levels to beta-test the game. Plus, Smash Bros is a fangame to start with. The fan-and-creator is named Masahiro Sakurai.
...Just my opinion.

And if Nintendo does say they beta test, then they should do more of it and also do it outside of Japan. I remember hearing about how Nintendo was hiring people (in Japan) to play MK Wii, makes me wonder if the whole "item rape" situation would have been noticed earlier if it was done by a western audience. Not implying that the Japanese are insuperior or anything just saying there needs to be more diverse testing. Western audiences like certain things eastern audiences hate and vice versa. EDIT: It appears that there are "product testers" at NOA (and probably elsewhere, so never mind.

I don't know why they bother - the only thing that bothers me is tripping, (and it's not really that big of a problem).

I don't like the way these people play Smash anyway.
I watched some of the videos, the game has now become "you must do specific moves to win" game. I'm against the world on this one I guess. I just like the slower easier gameplay.
I don't like the idea of it being a game where he who can pull off this trick will win, and the guy who can't will lose.
I mean the guys kept doing the same moves over and over and over until one of them made a mistake.
Every match was the same, no surprises. Everyone who played as Link played the same and did the same things. Everyone who was Fox did the same strategy. There was no variety, no unique element. No players strategy, just general strategy.

I've never met players like these, but the general rule for "tournament" plays could be pretty interesting for two players of equal powers. Things can actually get pretty heated up.
If there's anything to hate, I'd say it's how they call their matches "official". They aren't affiliated wiht the Brawl them in any way so THEY AREN'T.

It's kinda neat how they've dedicated so much effort to modding a game, but seriously - is that what your free time amounts to, guys? Balancing a game for competitive play? Unless you plan on seriously becoming coders for a profession, kind of a waste of life.
Ah well. I avoid competitive play where I can, because I just wanna have some fun - and losing is part of the deal.
Also, I'm probably the only person as Lucario who charges opponents head-on.

Their type of "competitive play" is boring anyway. Like I said before they all have the same strategy, there's nothing unique or interesting about it.

Permission to explode, sir? I have a say on this matter (having finally noticed and read through it) but it can only be honestly expressed in the form of Rageomania.

But in a coherent manner please This kind of thing does usually make me fanrage, but I think the changes they have made actually make a lot of sense, and would be the kind of delicate balancing I expect Sakurai would do if he was to work on SSB4. Having a team of play-testers is one thing, but having a massive online community come together and tweak a game to make it finely balanced is quite another. Imagine how much better some games would be if they could be tweaked and balanced in this way. Imagine Mario Kart Wii with some better play testing behind it.

Of course.
REALLY!? The competitive community is THAT pathetic? OH MAH GAWD I CAN'T PLAY BIG BLUE SO I GONNA FIX BIG BLUE! I happen to be really GOOD at scrolling stages and consider them PERFECTLY fair. It's because I PLAY ON THEM. If you're only used to playing Battlefield and Final Destination, OF COURSE you're gonna suck at Big Blue and Mushroomy Kingdom. It's what practice is for! Likewise, if you can't handle a chain throw, PRACTICE BREAKING 'EM! I have NEVER had a chain throw work on me or manage to perform a successful chain throw. The reason? IT HAS AN EASY COUNTER! Seriously, use an aerial attack before they grab. It's THAT EASY. And while I'm on about that, why the HELL does the competitive community insist on making tiers? Look, just because your strategy makes Meta Knight a friggin' GOD doesn't mean that he can't be beaten by another strategy. Sonic, a low-tier character, can take on Meta Knight AND WIN if you know what you're doing! Just because it's the MACH Tornado doesn't mean it can keep up with Sonic speeds (heh. Sonic speeds. Mach.) RUN DAMN IT!
I used to have a friend who played competitive. We had a couple matches, he was REALLY good. But I swear by the cross he said this after a game once. Now, note, I dual-main DK and Pikachu. I had started off as the ape, and was doing poorly after a couple rounds, so I thought I'd change my strategy to a faster character, i.e., Pikachu. We battle, I'm still sucking. After the battle, we're online talking about it, he says "You know, when you switched to Pikachu, it threw my game off." WHAT!? Are competitive players SO incapable of understanding that people have different strategies that it actually makes them play worse to fight someone with a diverse playing field? IT'S A FIGHT. IT'S UNPREDICTABLE. THAT'S HOW FIGHTS GO. I don't think I've ever been in a fight, real or fake, where I knew what my opponent was about to do short of back when I was like 5 and everyone always said what they were about to do. SHOW SOME RANDOM! I have actually, on several occasions, used moves for no real reason (basically, I intentionally miss) just to make my enemies go "What the hell?" It makes NO sense but it mixes things up AND THAT'S WHAT A FIGHT IS ABOUT (Well, at least with regards to how it's done. Reasoning is another story.)
Rageomania done, but I do have a little closer. I also feel like the only person who doesn't mind tripping. I actually use tripping to my advantage. I get back up, maybe get a kick in at that plumber looking to get a cheap shot, and move on. It's how I roll.

Why in da heck they must even tweak it up? It pretty much shows that Sakurai's work didn't seem to pay off for fans.
Which might turn into a never-ending ring like Sonic Franchise has, if Sakurai did listen to their complaints. But this is ridiculous.
Play SSB for one month. Then play Brawl. I'm sure you've become more improved in slow game playing. Scrolling Stages FTW. (-lwl-)
