If you've been following the activity here at all, you'll know that I have been working on some projects to expand on the level of information available on NinDB.
Well, today the first efforts have gone online, alongside a few design tweaks to make the website a little less... bleurgh!
Shin Onigashima and Yuuyuuki have been completely updated with complete rewrites of game page information, cameo lists and the English-speaking walkthroughs for Shin Onigashima, Heisei: Shin Onigashima and Yuuyuuki, all of which I have worked really hard to compile.
There is, of course, more information that could go on these pages. I want to do a little more work on the game pages, include staff rolls and soundtrack information and perhaps some character lists, but this will get me started for the time being. After all... I'm getting a little bored of staring at these games now.
The Shin Onigashima page has a similar cameos page as well.
I'm so glad it's going down well. I knew I had to do something, but I couldn't afford to spend the time trawling through the entire website and making blanket changes to it... and this solution seems to work, which means I can get back to focusing on the content.
I'll be working on a few short-and-sweet ones next - probably Clu Clu Land, Ice Climber, Balloon Fight and Devil World, as they seem fitting. Then I'll work out whether I want to do another adventure game series (possibly Famicom Detective Club) or whether I want to tackle that Mario series.
I have extended the main menu to include a Home button (as I kept trying to click there for one instead of the logo) and a new "Features" area. I say new, but it actually only contains the History of Nintendo and Totaka's Song at the moment (there wasn't anywhere to put Totaka's Song after last week's update, and I forgot to put the History of Nintendo up again after the site update last August!) What I'm hoping is that some of our more intense forum battles and discoveries will be turned into features on the site.
For example, I'm already working on one feature about how the Koopa Kids are not Bowser's children, but perhaps it would be an idea to have features about the DK family inconsistencies or the Zelda timeline. Maybe not. Maybe I'm just trying to be controversial
There have been a few other very small changes that you might notice.
I've been busy working on a load of FC/NES updates for early action games. Devil World is already up, while similar work on characters, enemies and items has been completed for Balloon Fight, Clu Clu Land, Ice Climber, Kung Fu and a couple of others. Don't be surprised if Kung Fu is inexplicably next on the site (it only has one cameo... damn you WarioWare!)
When the 3PS started it was certainly required to stab those protective thoughts from the heads of the fanboys, but I almost feel like that mindset is lifting somewhat amongst the Nintendo faithful (perhaps one of the plus points of Nintendo not releasing much).
I also feel the 3PS was reaching a point where it needed its own website.
It did pop into my head again when working on the Features though! I didn't forget your noble contribution
Nester the Lark: Hello, NinDB world! Post your shouts here! (But be careful not to wake the neighbors. )

nocturnal YL: Guys, guys! I can't believe what I found in Zelda 1! The game features an Elimination Mode that for some reason not many talked about! I wonder if it's fun? (Don't actually try it.)

nocturnal YL: Hey, I can edit shoutbox posts! This is already better than Twitter!

Nester the Lark: It seems like Cadence of Hyrule should be more popular than it is. Are people put off by the rhythm aspect? Or the randomly-generated maps?
Jul 24, 2020 14:01:59 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: ↑ Might warrant its own thread, but I think mixing rhythm and other genres usually resuls in gameplay too difficult for many. I can't handle it well either, judging from my scores in Dedede's Drum Dash.

nocturnal YL: ↑ For me personally, it simply hasn't been considered. It's a download-only game (until now) from a series I'm unfamiliar with and didn't feel like trying out.

Nester the Lark: Ironically, I did create a thread for Cadence of Hyrule, but then deleted it thinking there wouldn't be any discussion on it. Maybe I'll go ahead and make a new one.

Shrikeswind: Something to bear in mind about the shoutbox if you’re not already aware: It doesn’t show up on the mobile version of the forums. This shouldn’t be a major problem, but it can make it difficult to get into discussions for mobile visitors.
Jul 26, 2020 1:40:18 GMT -5
Shrikeswind: Also the more obvious character limit issues, and the format not really being conducive to longer-term discussion. It’s useful but limited; threads definitely still have their place.

Shrikeswind: (Honestly, Proboards mobile is pretty bad in general, but...)

Nester the Lark: Not sure if this works on all devices, but you can force the desktop version of the forum by scrolling all the way to the bottom and clicking the "Desktop" link at the lower right.

Shrikeswind: I’m aware. I’m typing this from my phone. I’m just pointing out that, for people who aren’t aware or who may be casually checking in on their phone, the shoutbox won’t be visible on

Shrikeswind: Is there a Discord for NinDB, by the way? It’s very popular with them there young’ns these days, so it might help activity.
Jul 26, 2020 22:07:47 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: There is no NinDB Discord. There was a brief discussion of it a few years ago, but nothing ultimately came of it. I rarely use Discord, myself.

Shrikeswind: Hm. Seems like it might be a good idea if activity picks up. Not to be a pessimist but I do have my doubts that'll happen though.

Shrikeswind: Okay not a Nintendo topic but I kinda need to talk about this because I just learned it and it's a thing so bleh.

Shrikeswind: You remember Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame, right? So apparently, 5 year old me was incapable of discerning male and female in non-humans, because *apparently* there's a female gargoyle, and the goat's a boy.
