Look at Koffing. That name is just a mispelling. But boy is it catchy and certainly fun. (Disregard Linkara's reaction - I'm using the video for the catchphrase. I like "Koffing" too.) |

Let's hope they keep this up for future games!
Hell, let's hope they start doing the translations ALONGSIDE Japanese development, so the whole world can get it around the same time. Other companies do it, Nintendo, why you gotta be different?

Actually, Nintendo Europe has been doing a fairly good job of this, especially for the DS era.
Although this is the first time ever, I believe, that a main series Pokémon game has hit European shelves before the US. Usually months separate them, with slightly less time for the remakes.
A sign that this is the big DS sendoff before the 3DS is released perhaps? Fingers crossed!

I just meant for the Pokémon games. We don't usually have to wait that long for anything else (except Kirby, why do we always have to wait forever for Kirby), but Pokémon usually has huge gaps between releases in each region. By the time the game comes out in America, we've already had the entirety of the game posted all over the internet for several months. And then anything that might've been missed usually gets posted in between the US and EU releases. It makes them almost not worth playing.  |

I think someone commented on Kirby a while back - It's because Europe doesn't buy Kirby. Only a small handful of Nintendo nerds will actually pick it up. The Feb release of Epic Yarn is a really short wait for that series in comparison. It's usually a year a more!
As for Pokémon, I think it just boils down to cross-Europe translations... but they've pulled their finger out, and I think they're trying to close the gap between US/EU for Pokémon. Probably for the reasons you said.

I figured Kirby probably wasn't so big here. Shame, because it's one of my favourite Nintendo franchises. I remember waiting months for a release date for Super Star Ultra, only to have the game silently appear on shelves about six months after I'd given up on it.

You know, just as I was about to post about how I'm surprised there haven't been any more English names released, Serebii.net posts a bunch of them, as told via IGN. Barbeque source. Not sold on Cofagrigus, which is a shame...it's one of my favorite 5gen Pokemon. And again the stupid fetusmon keeps its Japanese name, like I needed any more reason to hate them. Braviary is pretty clever, though. EDiT: Somebody leaked the supposed English translations for the entire generation. It's by an Anon, though, so take it with a grain of salt. Linkie. |

Reuniclus sounds more like nucleus now. EDIT: The Pokémon posted by IGN are on the official site now. Assuming the leaked list is true: - I knew Pignite sounded better than Pignition - Answering the poster on Carracosta: "-costa" means shore in Spanish, and "carra" doesn't exist as a word, though it hints at carriage just like in English - LOL @ "Klink, Klang and Klinklang" - Cubchoo: very appropiate - I love the kung fu ones |

Shame they changed Wargle, but I had guessed they wouldn't want to keep "war" in the name of an eagle in the colours of the US flag. XD
I also liked Deathcan for the sarcophagus, but oh well. I guess this means they'll probably also change my favourite of the Japanese names - Genosect.

Fan sites have opted for the translation " Genesect" since October. It's a reasonable alternative, though not one I've been fond of. |

That's strange... the katakana definitely seems to read "Genosekuto" from what I can tell. I don't know how they get from "Geno" to "Gene".
