Oddish is one of the cutest Pokémon and yet it has its origin in those creepy things The cotton thing reminds me that Mareep, Flaaffy and Ampharos are able to use Cotton Spore.

You know, I never knew the Mandragora connection. Oddish isn't a Pokemon I've ever used.
Out of curiosity, what Pokemon would you guys like to see Hutchinson take on? Could be one we know the origins of, but want to see a full article on, or one you're not sure of. Don't want to turn this into a clone of the Pokeorigins thread, though.

Don't want to turn this into a clone of the Pokeorigins thread, though. - I was surprised when Fry and Teev showed two Nidoking lookalikes I didn't know of.
- Exeggcute and Exeggutor, we already mentioned that would be interesting
- Shuckle and the juice it creates (it's on Bulbapedia but he could expand, I guess?)
- Remoraid is based on an interesting fish... Octillery also seems to have intrigued some of us at this forum.
- Hutcheon's view on "What are the legendary beasts?"
- Blaziken and chicken breeds (besides the Basan)
- Swampert family and its peculiar real-life counterpart
- Altaria, to answer Shrikeswind's questions
- Corphish and Crawdaunt and the history of their real-life counterparts
- Gastrodon and allopatric speciation
- The story behind Spiritomb
- Nosepass, Probopass, the Easter Island and magnets
- The inspirations behind Rotom

- Remoraid and Octillery would be cool, mainly because I really want to know if there is a reason why the former evolves into the latter.
- Also, Chansee. It's an odd Pokemon all around.
- The Slow family. It's strange.
- I second Shuckle, due to the ambiguity of "mold" Pokemon.

Pikachu. I'd like to know the connection between the squirrel and electricity. Also, what the crap is Bulbasaur supposed to be? As the Qu says, the Slowpoke line is odd (when I named Osoibaka I was just having a "Screw it" moment,) and I'd like to have something there. Also Altaria, natch. And finally, an answer on Tyranitar. Yes, everyone's saying it's one thing, but everyone else is saying it's something else. Which one is it? I'd like to hear his take.

The Pikachu link is simple- there is an actual, factual rodent called a Pika. At some point, a Japanese fellow probably noticed this and noticed the funny coincidence that Pika also means spark in Japanese. And I'm telling you, bro, Tyranitar is totally Anguirus. =P
I've heard the Slows are based on pigmy hippos, but as Conrad Hermes would say, that just raises further questions!

Perhaps so, but I'd like a fuller explanation. Hutcheon gives out great ones.
Tyranitar is Godzilla you prick! *Ragerageragefailrage*
Pygmy hippos, you say? That certainly DOES raise further questions.

Pikachu. I'd like to know the connection between the squirrel and electricity. That one's called Pachirisu, not Pikachu. Pikachu's based on the pika, which is essentially a type of rabbit. Which is not anything like a squirrel.

So why the tail and pointy ears? Unless you can find me a pika with a tail and pointy ears, I refuse to accept that as the full explanation for Pikachu. Maybe Pichu, but it would only explain a part of Pikachu to me, and not the whole animal.

The Pokemon designers love giving Pokemon weird ears. And his tail, you now, looks like a lightning bolt, which makes sense considering its electric type. Bingo bango, answered.

The tail is designed to look like a thunderbolt. As Qu already pointed out, the Electric connection is pretty obvious considering what "pika" means to a Japanese person.
I don't really see that the ears need an explanation, personally. I mean, pikas are directly related to rabbits, even sometimes called rock rabbits. They probably tried a few different ear types on Pikachu and decided the rabbit-like ones looked best.

With a tail like that, other parts of the body like ears are expected to be non-rounded as well.

No chlorophyll, huh? ;D The irony is that they still have the namesake ability, which is a key to success given their very low speed.
