Over the years its become apparent that Fan Fics can rarely be good. I personally believe nothing is impossible if done right, and I want this to be so! I theorized two things for a Fanfic to be good: 1. More than one mind should be working on it. 2. Needs to follow a strict set of rules. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well I want to get the first part down. That's why I propose the community should get together and create a Nintendo fan fiction comprised by several members, to get the most satisfactory results. To edit, write, and brainstorm. The second part is that I think we should come up with a set of guidelines on how to write a fanfiction here before we start. So that fighting or arguing won't break out. Here are my proposed rules (you guys can decide if they are good or not) -Brainstorm general concepts and plot points before writing the actual story.
-No one goes off on their own and start writing stuff, and then later say "let's do this!"
-If there are two arguing members with ideas, we take a vote on which idea to use.
-One person has the right to stand up (intelligently) and state why something is a bad idea. If it is legit, then it should be considered.
-No one has more power than another, we are all teammates.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But that's not all! I also believe that when working with preexisting works that in order to keep fans pleased and accept the fanfiction there needs to be limitations on what you can do! Let's take a look at Bleedman on what NOT to do! 1. Do NOT kill off main characters from a series. Bleedman killed numerous characters like Deedee, Mandark and much much more. Never do that.
2. Stay in character. A character should always behave like he or she would in their world. No getting overly angsty if they are a happy-go-lucky character.
3. No unofficial pairing! Don't pair characters that aren't confirmed to actually have a thing for each other. Mandy and Grim is one of the dumbest pairings I've ever heard.
4. Set the tone right. There's only a certain limit before things get too edgy when working with kids cartoons. So the same applies for Nintendo characters.
5. Make sure the right characters are more important than others. Everyone hated Chris Thorndyke for that reason.
6. Don't invent any relatives or facts for characters. No long lost third Mario Brother! Or Mario was really a cyborg all along!
7. Avoid iffy subjects. If something is not quite confirmed or has two possible truths, just leave it alone. Like don't mention Bowser's relationship with the Koopalings, it can get controversial.Well what does everyone think? Does anyone want to do this? Think this will be fun?

Well, I've currently got the scripts to that Nintendo Power Hour story in the writing (turned comic later on).
First few chapters are through. I should send some of these to you, perhaps?

Well I wanted to start something from scrap. See what the community wants to do. We have a lot of great minds here (I think) and I want things to be a mutual effort.

I've a couple of important points to make. First off, it's easy to generalize with regards to several aspects in fan-fiction. You mentioned character death, a good point to remember ALWAYS. Likewise staying in character, but this is one of those things where certain liberties MUST be taken, as the scenario would affect the reaction, and if the scenario has no canon parallels, there's no way to judge how a character would react unless the character is that damn predictable, like Sonic the Hedgehog or Donkey Kong. Also, a note on love issues, confirmed pairings are obvious, but many relationships could be construed as romantic even outside of confirmability, hence the 1,001 Ash ships. Keeping tone is unnecessary, since some fan-fics are amazing even though the tone isn't appropriate to the universe, for example, Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom. Not all stories are going to have the same feeling as the canon, as mentioned with RotMK, where it focuses heavily on death and revenge. In fact, that one breaks all the rules and STILL manages to rank as one of the most well-enjoyed Mario fan stories ever. The Chris Thorndyke rule, of course, is dead-on, as is the fact/relative rule. Iffy subjects, however, are always, repeat, ALWAYS going to be touched upon. It's what makes fan-fics interesting, you get to explore the controversies of the universe in question from the perspective of its residents.

Well you can predict how a certain character would respond by knowing their personality well.

And as we all know, the more one-note a character is (like Mario for example), the easier it is to judge how they'd react in any given situation.
It seems like each of us had our own fics in mind at some point or another, but since you're the one helming this idea Koopaul, maybe you should be the one who comes up with the exact premise. If this is supposed to be a crossover, there's about a million different ways it could go.

Well we can all post a premise if we want.
My suggestion isn't a crossover however. But a Mario fan fic that involves almost a little bit of every major game.
I always wanted to see a game where Mario had to team up with all the great heroes of his world in order to fight a threat greater than he's ever known.
Sort of like Justice League Mario.
The reason I want to avoid crossover is because there will be too much time and effort thinking of how these characters from other universes will meet. The reasons will either sound silly, or so complicated that it will take four chapters to explain.
But that's just me.

There aren't really a helluvalot of heroes in the Mushroom World besides Mario though. The best I can think of is Luigi and....Prince Peasly.

What I'd suggest is a crossover, but using Captain Rainbow as a bridge point. Since the nature of his game was a big cross over, you wouldn't have to completely suspend your disbelief at seeing Mario and Link together with Takamaru and Marth.
Just an idea.

As cliche as it sounds, I'd want a crossover to be a sequel of sorts to Captain N. I had a similar idea years ago for the Nintendo RPG thread that Smashchu made, but I figure it would work better as a fan-fic instead. The idea was that the original Captain N was long gone and a new guy gets beamed into Videoland to take his place. I figured maybe we'd, you know, actually stay true to the games its based on this time.

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Daisy, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Koopa, Parakoopa, Dry Bones, Boo, Hammer Bro., Dry Bowser, King Boo, Petey Piranha, Rosalina, Dixie Kong, Funky Kong...
I could keep going with playable characters. I honestly could.
What I imagine would probably be more stream-lined, however. Like, 12 characters without any villains (rivals are fine, however,) you know, like this.
Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, DK, Diddy, Yoshi, Birdo, Wario, Waluigi, Toad, someone. I'm drawing a blank on #12. Can't be Toadette, you're stupid for thinking it. =P.
If this is like the Justice League, villains would have to remain exterior to the group and only teaming up with them when push comes to shove. Remember that double episode of Batman: Brave and the Bold where Batman goes to the other universe and ends up helping and being helped by that universe's Joker because the laws of good and evil were inverted? And then when he went back, he teamed up with Joker Prime? Same concept. Mario and Bowser teaming up against some greater evil would sometimes happen (think Mario & Luigi,) and afterwards they'd go back to fighting. And of course Bowser'd be one of the main villains.
And as a collaboration, you may want to write this in a role-playing style, since certain folks are gonna be more focused on certain characters anyways, for example, I'd probably start spamming the Kongs while Man-Frog may spam Toad and you may spam Yoshi. For example. I don't know what you and Man-Frog'd spam (though I'd spam the Kongs, I flat-out know it.) But beyond the point. People being assigned to write from a certain character's perspective would help avoid character stagnation and neglect. Then, as the story unfolds from the guy with the plot idea, everyone keeps going. It's a bit like D&D, but without the dice and no one's dressed up like a wizard. I hope.

I was going to say "Use the Smash Bros. Universe" for a logical reason of a crossover, but Leon's idea of using Capt. Rainbow if better, even if we don't know much about him (at least I don't). I think we make a comical with seriousness in the back seat. We don't want to pull a Shadow the Hedgehog with lovable characters (refering to the game, I actually like SA2, BUT THAT'S BESIDE THE POINT). Other than that, I would hate too many main character. I think that's the first thing we should all agree upon before doing anything else. Here's my list: - Capt. Rainbow (I don't know much about him, but since he will be the catalyst for the crossover, he should obviously be a main character, if not the most important one) - Mario - Link - Samus - Fox - Marth - Capt. Falcon - Ness Can't think of any other important character right now that would deserve to be a main, but meh. A little personal oppinion about every character we could use: Mario: can't think much for him. Maybe he could have just save the princess, yet again, and be summoned or whatever we're going to do to get all the characters together, so he'd either be in top notch to tackle whatever they are all going to be fighting against, or be tired at first, get assaulted into a coma or something and then be a savior at some point Link: Link should be a new incarnation, just peacefully living without the idea of know he's the choosen one (yet again), but that this time, he won't be alone. Should be able to call upon past life abilities, weaponry and misc. Samus: The Metroid timeline is pretty WTF, since we all know that the games haven't been released in chronological order (Metroid-Prime Trilogy-Metroid II-Super Metroid-Other M-Fusion). But I think it would be safest to use Samus after Fusion, as she could possibly be a rouge [disobeyed the order to wait for the Galactic Federation to arrive on B.S.L., and instead destroyed the Space Station and SR388, the planet of the X]. - Fox: I'm not sure about him... heck, I originally had Pikachu, Kirby and DK on the list, but then opted to not include them. Almost kicked Fox off the list, but StarFox 64 kinda says "Fox is awesome, keep him on the list" (yes Leon, I know I said that I didn't like SF64 years ago... but I said that years ago ) - Marth: Not the effeminate SSB Marth. The Shadow Dragon one, the one that isn't constantly fixing his hair. Of course, he should already be King of Altea (or whatever his kingdom was, I can't remember). Not much to say about him, except that swords rock. Leon should be able to talk more about him - Capt. Falcon: I pray to the guy everyday, so yeah. He's on my list. Fanboyism Much? idfc ;D - Ness: Ness... another one I almost took out. NoA hates him. We all know that. But still, the Mother series is awesome, so he deserves to be in the fan thing. As for recurring characters, we could fill them up with Wario, DK, random famous pokémon like Mewtwo and Pikachu and Falco. *Glares at Shrike's list* 100 posts? Lol, took me a long time to just get 100 posts... I thought I had more... meh, whatever....

Hm well. Captain N that's accurate? With Captain Rainbow at its lead... Hm... Sounds pretty cool. But Shadrio I think Kirby and Pokemon need to be included don't you? As for the Mario idea, I see it this way: The Seven with the power of the Stars will unite and save the world. But its up to you guys.

I guess... I like Kirby and Pokémon (the latter being obvious), but idk, can't really think of them being in a story-heavy production without forcing them to have a certain character. Heck, Link speaking is already a strange idea.
I personally had the idea of many important characters NOT being main, but instead recurring. Having too many main character is always a problem.

Another thing you got to realize is that you should also integrate more minor and secondary characters into these things. That's one thing I'm very willing to stress with NPH. These kinds of stories aren't always about the supposed main characters. In fact, minor ones tend to spice things up. Sure, the main characters are step 1 with these things and should be taken into account first, but just because they're step 1 doesn't mean that step 2 and onwards are unworthy/unneeded. (I've even stated many times in the past that Smash is not the sheer determining/dictating force as to what's what in each of the Nintendo worlds, and that Sakurai is not a "god of the Nintendo universe" or anything.) Of course, you gotta start with the main characters. But after that is all just grab bag when it comes to picking out other characters. And put more into them if you have to, if the story calls for it. It's not a bloody-ass popularity contest. You know, to prove that more can be done with any other side characters. *coughcough* Namely the F-Zero ones (get your head the fuck out of Captain Falcon's ass on that one )
