This is one of my fears with massive crossovers, favoring certain franchises over others. But duo crossovers usually work better, like Mario and Sonic, or Zelda and Metroid or whatever.
Use too many... you start creating the same problem as making a Smash roster. Remember that topic?

Well, another key to putting these things together is to use what YOU think works best, and however you think it would work. Push your own interests into it, if you have to. Work some ego into it. If done right (!), it's kind of a good thing. Don't just throw in a "more popular" franchise into it for the sake of being "more popular than another". Consider first, is it gonna work in your story? If not, go for another that you think would.

Though some series, such as Mario, are technically capable of being read in many different lights, remember these series are few and far between, and most series have a specific environment. This leads to setting conflict. Sometimes, a series just doesn't fit into the story. This leads to the shoehorn effect Boo Destroyer refers to (without actually NAMING.) I mean, if I put Link into Jet Force Gemini, it's not gonna look pretty, because Link's Tolkienian universe runs counter to the Star Wars-esque universe of Jet Force Gemini. I mean, Link fights with a sword. Juno uses a machine gun. Sheik teleports around with Deku Nuts. Lupus hovers around with rocket boosters. Midna uses black magic to make enemies around her go boom. Vela shoots a trio of rockets from a handgun. Different worlds. But if you were to try and make an incarnation of Link that can exist in Jet Force Gemini, he's gotta, absolutely gotta, have a purpose for being there other than "Link in Jet Force Gemini would be so cool!" There's gotta be a story, and it's gotta be good, otherwise, you just look like the dork who made Link Skywalker.

A fanfic topic? (-lwl-) Now this is marvelous! I'll be happy to get on this stuff. Now this reminded me of this fic that I posted few months ago and was workin' on it a lot. (-'w'-) Actually I might use it for ya here, if it's OK for ya. I was going to say "Use the Smash Bros. Universe" for a logical reason of a crossover, but Leon's idea of using Capt. Rainbow if better, even if we don't know much about him (at least I don't). I thought still that why not instead make finally a CANON UNIVERSE of Nintendo instead of using Smash Bros for crossovers, since the SSB's events aren't canon to the represented series there. The setting of Captain Rainbow made me wonder where the setting has been placed on, since so many characters are from so many different universes. So I've been working on this little idea about how Nintendo World might be like actually, because so many theories and cameo/guest appearances happening all the time between Nintendo's series: Kirby's familiar with Chao (KDL2 & 3 ) -> she has met Donbe -> He and Hikari gave a heart star for Kirby to beat the crap out of Zero -> Hikari was in Mimin Island with other fellows of Nintendo and got cakeslapped by Devil -> Nick helped out obese Little Mac to come back into his glorious boxing figure -> Little Mac beats the crap out of DK -> Funky Kong was invited on Mario Karting (great excuse) - > Mario Kart Has Bob-Ombs -> Bob-Ombs appeared in Zelda-series -> Link met Prince Richard in LOZ: LA -> Prince Richard once lived in Custard Kingdom -> Dr Arewostain appeared in Wario Land 4, also there's Frog Statues -> Wario helps Stafy out in LOS3, another Frog Statue- pretty much sums it? So here's the idea: Did you know that planet of Nintendo is actually a sandwich of two worlds? It consists of a modern, present-time world like ours, it's sense of technology varying by some disctricts. In Americola you can find Diamond City, Pencilvania, Eagleland and some other famous cities. Not to mention the Seattle and New York still being there. At the other side of the world is Pokemon Islands where the people and PKMN live, like Kanto, Johto, Shinnoh and so on.
Sometimes if you ever saw a sewer, you might have thought simply that they are not more than stinking water passages, where rats and mice collect.
But these sewers lead to an unexpected, funny and somewhat VERY imaginative-rich world. This place is where you find the famous Mushroom Kingdom, Hyrule, Pufftop, Animal Islands, Flat World, Popples, Sable Kingdom, Angel Land, DK Island, Yoshi's Island and many other countries.
The worlds has been closed from each other, in order for planet not to be swept to doom by the people. But by every 8 year, the both worlds will be opened for 12 months to welcome those who want to explore or just take a vacation from their own enviroment. Every airport or reconstructed "sewer paths" are usually flooded by the vacation reguests that year, as the ordinary people try to get in the world under the sewers- and vice versa!
Some people still have permission to travel from one world to another, as they have strong sense of justice (well, some do.) and have been proved to do nothing that might lead to the unbalance of the worlds.Something I think we could concoct up from this... maybe? Story idea is little hard to think, since it's looks like that the idea hasn't been decided yet with ya all. I'm still having this neat story idea for Kirby-series using Adeleine and Panel De Pon + Sutte Hakkun crossover.

The problem is that Nintendo games are predominantly action games, and Nintendo heroes are predominantly silent protagonists. Mario might "whoop" and "yippee", Link might "hyaaak" and "chaaaa!" but none of them are particularly chatty.
That's why the Subspace Emissary worked so well. It played out as a largely silent movie, but they still managed to get their personalities and intentions across through their actions and reactions.
In my eyes, fan fiction is only good if it is totally true to the source material. Unfortunately, that's very rare to come by.

Even though Mario and Link are silent, they still have plenty of back-up characters that can do the talking for them. For example, Mario has Luigi and Peach while Link has Navi and Zelda. Tsukushi's idea up there reminded me of something else I had in mind. This idea was for a fic where the lesser known Nintendo characters get to take the spotlight, and the setting would be an amalgamation of all the different "worlds" on one planet. Naturally the "worlds" would have to be set in different time periods, like Metroid being in the future and Fire Emblem being in the past. The catalyst for all of this would be the main character of Time Twist setting everything in motion, as he clearly has the ability to travel through time. Some situational examples: -Mike Jones uses the Oxford Wonderworld to travel back to ancient Japan and meets Takamaru and the cast of Shin Onigashima. -Prince Richard visits the neighboring kingdom of Akaneia and meets Marth. -Starfy accidentally falls into the ocean (AGAIN) but this time winds up in Clu Clu Land befriends Bubbles (though Fry recently said that Clu Clu Land doesn't really take place underwater after all ). I could try and formulate a timeline and list of settings for all of this (though I'd probably have to leave out a bunch of Zelda periods, as you know how wonky that can get) using what we know about various games.

I've had a whole "Nintendo World" crossover-type place in mind myself.
For starters, if you think the whole thing through with these many places in each franchise, you'd understand why the SSE world was like that.
So I went and set up the land formations on my own (every type of landform imaginable, a very Nintendo thing to do), but with that, scattering the simple places like Peach's Castle, an Animal Crossing village (on an island of its own; Animal Island), the Fountain of Dreams, Bowser's Castle, Pufftop Palace (Starfy), and all sorts of other prominent places in each series that would work well thrown into a more consistent, cohesive place as such.
I've got the more "generic" places too, like a large city, but not without its familiar locales within (Pokemon Stadium, etc.).
Side note: "Staying true to something" (like a character) isn't always necessarily copy-and-paste with them. There's a difference between staying in-line with their personality and putting them in a different situation.

I'm having a pretty same idea like you do, expect I've been eliminating most of the time periods by putting these worlds set to other time periods to their own "world" inside the "Nintendo Planet", since I thought that it might still eliminate some confusion between some cameo appearance stuff, like Crazy Tracy being in Captain Rainbow, and since she comes from Koholint Island.

Considering how drastically different in style Captain Rainbow is as well as how blatantly meta the game's nature is, I think it's safe to write it off as another non-canon setting like Smash Bros.

But that "meta" seemed to have "semi-coincidental" effect on next Punch-Out! for Wii coming out year after Captain Rainbow. I'm still doubting Captain Rainbow being non-canon because of that. It might be a coincidence that Little Mac starred in a new game after Captain Rainbow, but it feels pretty nicely set up after the events of that game.

I don't think you understand what meta means.... At all.

I still think we should keep it simple and go with one series, but if this what everyone wants to do...
