Actually, there have been at least 3: SMB2, SML, and SML2. Not to mention that even those enemies in SMB1 were completely different from the original Mario games, you know, the DK arcade series and Mario Bros.
Super Mario Land and Super Mario Sunshine did. Four seperate environments and one big tropical paradise. Not to mention that SMB1 only had five real environments which, when you think about it, could coexist in one biome. It wasn't like you made jumps from the desert to a forest to an archipelago to a volcano to what-have-you.
This doesn't show itself as that drastic of a change yet, since we haven't seen the whole game yet. The DKU seems to enjoy how this game is gonna roll so far. Mostly, though, you're coming off as a bit Sonic-fan-esque. Not to sound rude or mean, but you are. I mean, you heard about that "Buy Sonic 1 instead of Sonic 4" boycott? Just on what they knew only as of when it was first announced? (And speaking of, what a stupid boycott.) I smell a bit of that on your breath right now.

Well SML had Goomba and Koopa-like enemies. But you're right about the other ones.

Actually, there have been at least 3: SMB2, SML, and SML2. Not to mention that even those enemies in SMB1 were completely different from the original Mario games, you know, the DK arcade series and Mario Bros. Not completely new. Super Mario Land 1 had Goombas, Koopas (exploding shell ones), Piranha Plants, what are basically Fishbones, Bullet Bills, etc. Super Mario Land 2 had the above as well as Boos, Cheep Cheeps, Roto Discs, maybe Grinders and Tatanga. SMB 2 had enemies found in later games, but that's probably not counting. Compare to some DK games with no recurring enemies. And both had about five worlds (four for Mario Land, seven or eight for Super Mario Sunshine). And note I said... less types of environments than the original. Super Mario Bros 1 had few types, but those types were nearly always in future Mario games. And I'm not trying to be negative. Nor am I boycotting anything. I think the game looks excellent, and I personally bet on many of the things from the original SNES games returning. Heck, I'd love some more information on the game, just because I'm that curious about it. And I'm not Sonic fan like. I play Mario games (and various other Nintendo games) constantly, and really, really like being contrary to people online who get various facts wrong. P.S. The DK Vine/Universe site is awesome, and they're not bad people. I didn't intend any arguments about that site. P.P.S. The boycott thing is from here: seanmalstrom.wordpress.com/2010/03/09/email-lapsed-gamers-agree-on-mario-galaxy/“3d Mario is the perfect example of it. There are millions of people who are not just disinterested in 3d Mario, they are actively boycotting it by refusing to buy it. And when Mario 5 comes out, all these millions of people mysteriously reappear into the market. When Galaxy 2 fails to sell to these people, the only logical conclusion is that these people are actively against 3d Mario. They are interested in video games, interested in Mario, but they do not want 3d Mario.”P.P.P.S. I do not see a good reaction to that above link.

You gotta be careful when bringing up DK Vine here, dude.
Anyways, a couple points. First off: There are really only five enemies with any level of recurrance from SML that are in original form: the Goombas, Koopas, Bullet Bills, Fishbones, and Piranha Plants. When's the last time you saw Ganchan? Or the Gaos? The monsters that don't recur far outnumber those that do in SML. And though I note the presence of "After SMB2," I took that as you excluding SMB2, intelligent for your point, but SMB2 is still an exception to that rule.
Seven or eight's about five? Since when? That's 2 to 3 over, which in the case of levels is a significant gap. And it so happens that the only recurring environments from SMB1 to SMS were the canyon (the mushroom forests being the canyon, for sake of clarity) and the underwater. The fortress was replaced with the volcano, and the rest was beach, a different environment from hilly fields by far.
(I know this wasn't you, but I still find it important to comment.) That's some pretty damn stupid logic there. Maybe they just didn't get the chance to buy it, or maybe they aren't interested in 3D Mario, but I can guaran-Goddamn-tee you that there aren't many people boycotting 3D Mario games. They may simply not want to buy a 3D game. And note that he uses New Mario Wii for his spring-board. Bad game for that, since EVERYONE got in on that game, even the casual players. Galaxy 2 didn't have the casual market.
EDIT: I posted this and immediately felt I sounded like a dick, so try to understand, I'm not trying to argue. These are simply things to remember.

dsultimate.net/Board/upload/blog/1/entry-1294-ten-things-donkey-kong-country-returns-needs-to-be-successful/But to be concise, what I mean is that Donkey Kong Country Returns, to be really a good successor needs to realise Donkey Kong Country isn't just tropical forests and mine carts. All the earlier games had non typical settings and enemies alongside the nature themed ones and tropical areas. Snow levels, factory levels, haunted hall, ship levels, castle levels, swamp levels and levels inside of a bee hive. I'm just worried a bit that Returns will just be fighting oversized animals as bosses and going through tropical jungles every second level when the earlier games had quite a lot of variety. I hope this too... Well, I'd even say it's too pessimistic to think otherwise. Even the spin-offs haven't failed at it when you think about it. Totally agreed on the gimmick levels part.

I point out one thing, though: We've seen several non-jungle levels already.

Including a lagoon filled with wrecked ships. I'm amazed the pirate theme is still going strong sixteen years after the original Donkey Kong Country.

I gotta agree with Shrikeswind here. That quote is total bullshit.
NSMBWii was guaranteed to sell better than Mario Galaxy from the start. Not because people dislike 3D Mario, not because millions of people are boycotting it, but because it was advertised as a Mario game the whole family can play together. If you consider the Wii's audience, it should be obvious why it sold better than Mario Galaxy: a one-player game.

Don't bash co star mode, it seems like it's going to be really useful for beating the Perfect Run mission.
But somewhat back to the topic of Donkey Kong Country Returns, anything else been shown recently? Sorry if this seems impatient, but with such an awesome seeming game in the future, I can't be the only one to want to know more of what Retro are planning for it.

Useful =/= fun. Galaxy's co-op mode is always useful if you can find a second player actually stupid enough to do it.

Galaxy 2's co-op mode on the other hand is actually quite amusing.

Galaxy 2's co-op mode on the other hand is actually quite amusing. And a lot more useful. Trust me, I've tried this with somebody (I was the Co-Star) and we've been coming through a lot easier than with just one player.
