Is anybody here a fan of football/soccer? I was wondering it since there are people from around the world in this forum and the FIFA World Cup is said to be the most watched world sport event. The second round starts tomorrow! These are the qualified teams and the matches that are taking place during this round. It has been a very unpredictable tournament... Teams that were favorites (even recent champions) have been left behind in the first round, and others that nobody bet on before are making their way to the knockout stage.

Ah, man, I hadn't been able to watch it, but I'm trying to keep up. This is the first I've heard, actually. Kinda sucks being surrounded by folks with no real interest in soccer. I'd love to be able to take vague interest in it too! =P But seriously, though. For home-team, of course I'm shippin' for the US, but barring that, I wouldn't mind a Brazilian or English victory.

The US barely qualified for this round, and it was awesome. That last goal Landon Donovan scored after minute 90 against Algeria was arguably the most exciting goal of the tournament so far. Here's a summary, and this is a video of the goal and previous goal attempts:

I, like the rest of Australia, kind of sort of cared while Australia was in, but now they're not, and soccer is shit, so I no longer give a crap.

Not fanatical here, but I watch a match when I happen to stumble upon it while changing channels Anyway I'm rooting for my homeland obviously (Maybe them Dutch boys will finally get the world cup again (HAHAHAHAHA)) and the US, who's pretty much the underdog. It'd be pretty awesome when they end up winning the whole thing.

Throwing caution to the wind, I betray both my nation and gender by really really not caring about football at all.
In fact, I'm sick of it. It's constant, all the time, on every channel. Every product has football themed packaging. Every shop has a little England flag with "I support England 2010". Every car has damn England flags on.
It's a bunch of overpaid tossers with well-coordinated feet. Well done.

The same happened here in New Zealand, and now even though our team got eliminated, the press keep saying the NZ soccer team was "unbeatable." Because all our matches results in draws . . .But then again, 3 draws are better than 3 losses and it was only NZ's 2nd World Cup appearance. Well at least we dragged down former champs Italy down with us.

I watch the England matches, just because it's England, but I never watch football at all for the 4 years in between. But I do know the offside rule so naaaa = ]

I don't watch it, but I hear from others about it.
The most memorable thing would be when Robert Green fails to save the ball. Too bad he didn't appear since then; he's normaly a good goalkeeper.
And from what I've seen, Adidas Jabulani is really as erratic as some goalkeepers describe.
This year's World Cup is quite unpredictable.

Actually, we totally jumped on your backs for that day between us getting eliminated and you get eliminated, and we're particularly pleased that you did take out Italy, who took us out back in '06. But now we really don't care.

It's two different sports but your post will remain completely unedited. Also, the British should totally call American football soccer.

Sometimes I get swept up in the excitement of big World Cup matches, but more often than not I found it's more enjoyable to head into town and stand around pretending I am the last survivor of the apocalypse.

You know, Fry, you sound a bit like me. I, too, cannot stand my country's football, and always feel like the only one. The difference is that my country's football DOES NOT ACTUALLY USE FEET.

The difference is that my country's football DOES NOT ACTUALLY USE FEET. lol The USA team was eliminated by Ghana They had tied by scoring 1 spectacular goal each, so they went to extra times, where Ghana scored 1 goal. Ghana advances to the quarter-finals, where they'll face South American nation Uruguay.
