I would be ok with it as long as there aren't too many 3rd party characters. Perhaps Sonic and Snake can be replaced with different characters. The nerd fallout would be pretty huge and they know it, especially with Sonic. DQ-wise I'd be cool with Rocket or Healie, slimes being DQ's mascot 'n all. The actual heroes not so much. We got plenty of fantasy swordsmen over at Fire Emblem.

That makes doing it even more worthwhile. These guys have had their time in the sun, now it's time for other characters to take their place.

Doesn't make a lotta sense to me. I mean I know third party characters are a fishy bunch and it's not a 100% certainty Sonic/Snake'll make a return, but they're both big time characters on Mario/Link's level. Not having them return in replacement of some other bigshot 3rd party dude would upset a lotta people, which I'm sure isn't what they're aiming for.
Besides, I want Snake to come back and confusingly ramble on about all these crazy new Nintendo newcomers he has to deal with

Link as well, considering there were two of him in the last game! Pikachu? A first gen character? OLD! Replace with a newer face! ...If you can't tell...I am a HUGE Snake fan. Snake stays. If he doesn't...

With Nintendo's lack of new franchises - like I mentioned in the off-topic thread - the roster's gonna stay largely this way for quite some time, unless they do get something new out.
Or they could go for more second-parties like Golden Sun, Chibi-Robo, Starfy, etc.

Mario and Link are Nintendo characters and most importantly they are icons of Nintendo. Snake and Sonic are not, therefore they do not need to return in SSB4. Nobody cares about the Mario/Sonic rivalry anymore and it hasn't been relevant for years.
Only a few Sonic fanboys will miss Sonic.

And your retarded assumption that "only a few" will miss Sonic is making you sound like a troll. If you couldn't get it the first time, my point was that even if you think a character should be replaced, doesn't mean the rest of the world agrees with you. I want every Fire Emblem character gone because I hate the series. How does that make you feel? Sonic and Snake deserve to stay, not just because they are original characters but because they have plenty of fans.

^ When Leon states something hard to swallow, it usually still makes enough sense for it to happen. In any case, he's not intending to sound like a troll, trust me Let Sonic fans not be sad, though. Mario and Sonic will likely still enjoy affinity thanks to "Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games" ;D

They'd have to be blithering idiots to drop Sonic and Snake at this point, or anybody they currently have save for maybe Toon Link.
All we really have left are second party series and obscure stuff.

My thoughts on the return of the current 3rd Party Characters:
Sonic: with the popularity of the charcacter and the constant Mario & Sonic Olympic games I expect Sonic to return for SSB4.
Snake: the only reason he's in is because Kojima asked for him to be in it (and, as you all know, he wanted Snake to be in Melee but was too late). As for him being in SSB4, that would depend solely on Kojima's desires and Sakurai's Team. My only doubt of his return is that Snake is... well, dead in the MGS series (that hasn't stopped Ganondorf) and as far as I know (my knowledge on the topic is lacking), Raiden, from MGS2 and MSG4 is supposed to replace him as the new central character in the next Metal Gear game (which should come out before SSB4). Of course, they could always add Raiden and keep Snake.
As for taking out any other character, I can only think of Jigglypuff. Hasn't been relevant in anything other than SSB in the past few years. Other than that, I'm pretty sure Jigglypuff is popular in Japan, but Mewtwo didn't make it into SSBB and it's one of the most popular pokemon, thanks to the first movie. Ike is another possibility, if the next Fire Emblem's Lord is popular enough to revoke Ike. And I suspect a major, or at the very least a minor moveset alteration for Pit.

Sonic and Snake deserve to stay, not just because they are original characters but because they have plenty of fans. If you want the FE characters out, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. However, I would ask that you remain civil and behave like an adult. Frankly some characters should be replaced. Snake is not a character that has had a solid history on Nintendo consoles, and does not accurately represent the spirit of the series. You and I both know that if Kojima and Sakurai were not friends Snake would never have been chosen for Brawl. I will admit that he's a fun and interesting character, but there are countless other third party characters who should have been selected before him. With regards to Sonic, he is in no way a deal breaking character. Only a very small amount of people bought the game because it featured Sonic. I know he has his fans, but most of those people will buy the next game with or without him, just as I would with the FE characters removed. I believe that these guy should be removed and replaced with characters that Nintendo has an active interest in obtaining. Right now Nintendo's big prize is Dragon Quest, and therefore they should be given a spot before any others are concerned.

The thing is, the Nintendo fountain has been largely tapped out - yes, you can come up with a whole list of characters that should be in, but they're all D-listers at best. Snake and especially Sonic are A-list video game characters. I would therefore like them to stay, and many more A-list characters included as well - and this means more and more third parties.
Honestly I'm convinced that Sakurai, if given the chance way back at SSB would have put in 3rd parties, and kept the roster largely A-list. And by the point of SSB4, there would have been a huge selection of notable 3rd party characters - so why not right that wrong now? Its either that or fill the roster with god-only-knows-who.

Its hard to define what an A-List character is. Hey that sound like fun! How about we make up what we feel are A, B, C, and D characters.
Oh I love making lists! This is based on how iconic/ important/ successful I think they they are.
Mario: A Luigi: A Peach: A Bowser: A
Donkey Kong: A Diddy Kong: B
Link: A Zelda: A Ganondorf: A Toon Link: A-B
Samus: A
Yoshi: A
Kirby: A Meta-Knight: B Dedede: B
Fox: A Falco: B Wolf: C
Pikachu: A Jigglypuff: D Pokemon Trainer: A Lucario: C
Ness: C Lucas: C
Captain Falcon: C
Ice Climbers: D Pit: C
Marth: C Ike: C
Wario: B
Olimar: C
Mr. Game & Watch: C R.O.B.: C

By my reasoning, you're being way overgenerous there.
A-Listers, in my mind, are generally carry their own series, appear regularly (you can't really be an A-Lister if you haven't had a game in years), and are instantly recognisable to most people, even if they don't play many games (therefore, they probably have a presence in non-video game media). Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi (the Mario series is so notable that all the major characters from it basically fall into A list status), Pikachu, Pokemon Trainer (instantly recognisable, even though he will likely be identified as 'Ash') Donkey Kong, Link, Kirby, Sonic
B-Listers are either notable characters in the really major series, or lead their own series that aren't quite as notable as the A-list ones. They're recognisable to basically all gamers, and perhaps a section of the wider community, but aren't quite as omnipresent as the A-Listers. Samus, Fox, Wario, Diddy, Zelda, Ganondorf, Snake
C-Listers are lower still. Secondary characters from B-list franchises, characters from one game series, characters that haven't been seen for a long time = characters that even gamers would look at and go 'who'? Falco, Marth (maybe), Captain Falcon (on the slide), Metaknight, Dedede, Jigglypuff (may be close to B thanks to being a part of Pokemon in its hugely popular years),
And D-Graders are even lower. Ice Climbers, Lucario, Ness, Lucas, Ike, Roy, Pit (will possibly move up to C with Uprising), Wolf, Olimar, Game and Watch, ROB
its all pretty subjective, obviously. And having actually categorised them for myself, i guess I figured Smash as an A nd B list affair, rather than just an A one.
