So, a couple of interesting things from the Indie World Showcase.
First, Metal Slug Tactics is officially confirmed for Switch.
Also, Tetris Effect: Connected is coming to Switch.

So, this was kind of a strange Direct for me. It was enjoyable, but there weren't any major bombshell announcements. More like things that made me say, "Oh, that's cool!" For the details... - I'm looking forward to the DLC for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, but it's really hard for Nintendo to show much of it because they're always trying to avoid spoilers. It seems that Purah & Robbie are two characters in one, and there will be one other mystery character. Also, a new Coliseum stage, "and more." I've enjoyed the DLC so far, but I hope the next wave is more substantial.
- I wasn't expecting Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games to be added to NSO. Too bad it will be for a new, more expensive tier. On the other hand, most of the N64 and Genesis games didn't interest me (or I already have them), so I don't have a reason to upgrade anyway.
However, there are some great games that I'm happy see other people will get the chance to play: Castlevania: Bloodlines, Contra: Hard Corps, and Gunstar Heroes. Also, interesting to see Banjo-Kazooie show up.
- Castlevania: Dracula X being included in the Castlevania Advance Collection is really random since it's neither a GBA game nor a metroidvania. It's also somewhat average (but not bad), in my opinion.
- Actraiser Renaissance was one of the biggest surprises for me. I didn't expect Square Enix to actually revisit this series. I might be interested in checking it out. Also, Yuzo Koshiro confirmed he came back to work on the music for it again.
- Namco games being added to Arcade Archives is cool. I suppose starting off with Pac-Man and Xevious makes sense, but I look forward to seeing more interesting additions in the future.
- Nice to see Shigeru Miyamoto in a regular Direct again.
- As soon as he announced Chris Pratt would be voicing Mario in the animated film, I immediately thought, "Oh no, there's going to be drama." (And there is.) But aside from that, the celebrity voice cast is about on par with Illumination's other animated films. I think Anya Taylor-Joy will make a good Peach, and Jack Black could be brilliant as Bowser.
Not only will the film include Donkey Kong, but also Cranky Kong! I don't know why, but that makes me happy! (Mario Cinematic Universe confirmed.)
- Splatoon 3 still looks like Splatoon 3, and I'm still considering it.
-The Bayonetta 3 trailer was a journey for me. I saw it was a Platinum game right away, and immediately thought "Bayonetta 3." But then it looked like Astral Chain, and I thought there was no way it could be a sequel so soon, so I figured it might be DLC. Then Bayonetta appeared, and I thought, "Bayonetta DLC for Astral Chain?" But then I realized my first impression was the correct one.
Bayonetta has a new voice actor. I'm seeing people point out that this Bayonetta seems to be a grown-up version of Cereza from the previous games rather than the original Bayonetta. Would make sense considering the original teaser from 2017.
Is that character at the end supposed to be Dante from Devil May Cry? If it's not, Platinum Games still had to know people would draw the comparison. Can't be an accident.
Am I interested in Bayonetta 3? Not sure...
Overall, this Direct didn't change my future game-purchasing plans. But I can't call it a bad Direct just because a lot of it didn't appeal to me personally. In a way, I'm actually kind of relieved. I'll have a chance to catch up on other things.

Nintendo Switch Online is a "huh, neat" to me. Although I'd love to ask for the opposite: a lower tier without NES and SNES access. I got the membership just for the save data backup. Post-apocalyptic Kirby is a thing. Everyone saw a 3D Kirby coming, but the ruins setting is quite a shocker.
Also, ActRaiser is back. Didn't expect that. Too bad it's a download-only game with 2D graphics. I'm not too interested in anything else. Which is good, because TGS is coming soon…

Oh yeah, and then there's this...
I'm curious to see what Nintendo has saved for last. Surely it'll be something special, right? Perhaps my only real question is "first-party or third-party?"

Feels like I have to come make this joke since my first post in 2007 was in an April Fools thread about this picture. Incredible that it's basically real now. Oh hell. That was literally half my life ago. What the fuck.

So, Sora from Kingdom Hearts. I don't have strong feelings about this one, but I know it made a lot of people happy. Sora has been highly requested, apparently since the character poll for Smash 4. (Now we know why they didn't have another one: they lied about the results for the first one. ) Interesting how they went out of their way to include almost only exclusive Kingdom Hearts material, and avoid as much Disney material as possible. (I wonder how much Nintendo had to pay just for the Mickey Mouse symbol on the key blade.) I sorta wish there had been a first-party character as the final Smash character, but to be honest, I can't think of any first-party characters with the kind of broad appeal appropriate for a grand finale that aren't already included. So, I guess a big third-party character was the way to go. And I got my Xenoblade 2 rep months ago, so I'm good. Even though I don't play the game, I might still want the amiibo.

New Indie World:
Only thing that I was really interested in was River City Girls 2. And I still haven't played the first one yet. I oughta fix that.

OK, here we go... Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes - So, basically, this is like the Age of Calamity of Fire Emblem Warriors. The graphics look much nicer than both the original FE Warriors and Three Houses, in my opinion. I'm somewhat interested. Mario Strikers: Battle League - Nintendo seems to be pulling out all the Mario sports games this generation. At least we know what Next Level Games has been working on. I've never played either of the previous Strikers games, but I'm somewhat interested in this. The armor looks goofy, though. Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series - I've never played a Klonoa game, either, but I always hear great things. I kinda regretted not picking up the Wii remake, so maybe I should give this a shot. Nintendo Switch Sports - Speaking of sports, I was wondering to myself just a few days ago if Nintendo would ever revisit Wii Sports, or if it was just a novelty of its time. Surprisingly , I'm mildly interested. The bowling was always really fun. At first, I thought it didn't use Miis anymore, but it looks like it can convert your Mii into the style used in-game. There will be online play test February 18-20. Definitely want to try it out. EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings for NSO - Nintendo remembered that the NES and SNES are things on NSO. I'm actually not a fan of this series. I never did finish EarthBound on Wii U. I might mess around a little with the original game, though. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - This was not a complete surprise due to rumors and comments from Yasunori Mitsuda. I recognized the art style almost immediately. Naturally, this will get its own thread. Overall - This was a really strong Direct. Lots of big titles. Very little filler.

So much new info to unpack! Let's see… As usual, SQUARE ENIX games are everywhere. Not interested in any of them.
Portal is here! No Man's Sky is ported to Switch too. Not interested myself (I like Portal's humour; just not interested in buying a download-only game that I watched videos of so many times), but good news to me.
Never thought Klonoa would get the Encore treatment. Not sure if I'm interested.
Mario Strikers has to be the most unexpected news. It's the second most un-Mario-like series to feature Mario (#1 is Super Paper Mario), so I thought it would be gone for good. Really glad to see it back; I had lots of fun playing against others on GameCube (and not very fun playing against the overpowered CPU players), and I kind of regretted not getting the Wii version (it's not as fun as the GameCube one, but I didn't think it'd be the end of Strikers for a long time), so I'll give this a shot.
The Kirby and the Forgotten Land trailer was the only thing I looked forwarded to in this presentation, and I love every bit. It seems that we aren't getting new abilities anymore, but in its place the existing abilities can be upgraded. Mouthful Mode looks fun to play and reminds me a lot of Mario Odyssey's captures. It looks really painful, though.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is another pleasant surprise. I'm getting a feeling that it'll try to rewrite history, and the player ultimately won't be forced to choose between killing Edelgard or Dimitri. Too little information for me to comment on, and I may want to jump into this game blind.
Splatoon 3 has its own Salmon Run. Not surprising.
I always thought the Wii Sports series deserves a sequel, and we're finally getting one. Half of the activities aren't new, but Tennis and Bowling are the most popular sports in the original, after all. Players can play as either sportsmates or Miis. I'm interested in the test play, but whether I'll remember to hop in by then is another question.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC looks bleh. It's just Mario Kart Tour ports with relatively little graphical improvements, and I'm not going to fall into the same trap of buying MK8 Wii U DLC just to have MK8 DX announced months later. Unless they're making another DLC-complete release for the next system, I'm not interested.
Xenoblade 3 looks good. The main character (Noah?) reminds me of both Takamaru and Oboro from FE Fates. It kind of looks more appetising than Xenoblade 2, but for now I'll just watch from afar.
The Mother 1 and 2 announcement is easily the worst part, as it's presented as an update to the Nintendo Switch Online service. Just as I thought they're finally adding more NES and SNES games (even though I don't play them), it ended up to be the one series both Nintendo and fans would never stop overrating — and just that.

Overall, this is easily the best Nintendo presentation I've seen. As I said, I never get more than 2 games that interest me in the E3 shows, and that applies to Nintendo Direct too. This presentation broke that record.

It was a good direct. Even without anything Smash related. - Opening with the FE music and cinematics made it appear to be a normal FE game and not a Warriors spin off, would have been better to show the (Warriors) gameplay first. - Mario Strikers, Looks good, though possibly toned from Strikers Charged (if the rumors about Nintendo internal polices/guidelines concerning Mario character portrayals are real post Striker Charged release). It looks like it will be fun and with Next Level Games seems to be skilled at making good multiplayer experiences. There is also the funny situation that Next Level Games first game made under Nintendo ownership ends up being a continuation of the game series that got Nintendo to first work with them in 2005. - Kirby's mouthful mode looks weird - Switch Sports looks interesting, though having 3 "net" based sports (tennis, badminton, volleyball) seems a bit lacking in variety, seems strange to have soccer with Mario Strikers getting released this year. With Wii Sports and Resort at least there was gameplay variation in controller usage and whether the sport was alternating (golf, bowling, archery) or simultaneous (tennis, boxing, power cruising/jet ski/, cycling). I think this was a missed opportunity to bring back the power cruising racing game with Joy-Con motion controls (then again you could probably say that about any other sport from the originals). - Crono Cross re-release and Live A Live getting an English release is good to hear. More studios need their gaming catalogue available on modern systems and Square Enix is apparently trying to do that - Portal 1 & 2, good to see a Valve game make it to a Nintendo platform. - Metroid Dread getting some new easy difficultly option will shut people up. - The Force Unleashed Wii version (and it's multiplayer) getting an enhanced Switch port in 2022 came out of nowhere. Would have thought they would have ported the HD versions/Ultimate Sith version over. - MK dlc, it took nearly 5 years (and 43.35 million Switch copies sold as of Dec 31, 2021) to finally add more tracks. Though it looks like they might be upscaled versions from Tour. GBA Sky Garden looks like it might be getting some elevation to it. - Xenoblade 3, Good to see it exists, though need get a Switch and still play my copy of XB2.

- MK dlc The way ProBoards turned your "8 D" into that emoji makes it look like you're freaking out about Mario Kart DLC.
