Unfortunately, "where they'll go next" will probably be somewhere in the 2D realm, considering the Japanese audience's preference for 2D games (which is the whole reason we're still having New Super Mario games). And as a result, people will think they're a rehash/too similar or at the very least try to compare them and get into nitpicky arguments like this.

I stand with Teev on the issue of the Mario series going lifeless/barebones. They used to take so many creative measures at Mario's world (SML1 & 2, anyone?), but now all that seems to have gone away. Confounded "nostalgia".
I agree that Mario Kart track locations should be made into platforming levels as well. I've always found it weird how Mario Kart comes up with various concepts for locations, but NSMB always keeps it the same.
On another note, Kirby's 20th gets a compilation disc, but not Metroid's 25th and DK's 30th?

It's funny how when Super Mario Bros 2 was released, the American distributors noticed how similar it was and completely revamped a completely different game in order to make one of my all-time favorite Mario games.
Then when we got the real SMB2, I played it and quit after the first few levels because it was so boring.
Only a few people are getting my point. I love Nintendo...I just want to see more from Mario. And yes, more Waluigi would be nice as well.

I thought they changed SMB2 because they decided the Japanese version was too difficult for American players?
Well, they must be doing something right. NSMB Wii is the best-selling Mario game there is. It's sold more than double any other game in the series. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

To be fair, they probably ditched the Japanese SMB2 for a bunch of reasons.
It certainly seems that they skipped the Japanese SMB2 because it was too difficult for American players, but that was in 1986. When faced with SMB3 in development they needed a stopgap, but by this time it was 1988 and the Japanese SMB2 was looking dated by the standards of other games coming out at the time.
You have to remember, the US release of SMB2 and the Japanese release of SMB3 happened in the same month of the same year.
But yes, the point of course being that the "revived" 2D Super Mario Bros. games seem to rely on the designs of SMB3 and SMW almost exclusively, while the 3D games (while also borrowing from the past) also throw in a load of crazy new ideas.
And we will probably be getting two New SMB games in the same year!
On the one hand, does it really matter what design the blocks have when you're running and jumping through the game? On the other, throwing in some different ideas would be very welcome. They don't even have to be new ideas! A level based on the docks in Super Mario Sunshine, a level set on a space station in Super Mario Galaxy... It just mixes it up a bit and makes each level feel different to the last, even though at its core it is the same.

I see zero mentions of Super Mario 3D Land in this debate for some reason. Either people haven't played it, or it's a sign that it was original enough for people not to dislike it.

NinDB's been pretty dead lately and this is a great debate that's given us something to talk about. As for Super Mario 3D Land, You're right, Johans. I haven't played it yet

I see zero mentions of Super Mario 3D Land in this debate for some reason. Either people haven't played it, or it's a sign that it was original enough for people not to dislike it. I bought it at half price. No reason to feel unhappy with that I recieved Either way, when it comes to buying games, price, personal interest in the game and having enough time to play the game are what mainly go into consideration when buying games. With what I said about Super Mario Galaxy 2 before, I haven't bought it yet because I haven't gotten the money for it yet and I'm not so interested in it, despite knowing it's better all around compared to the first one. My priorities are elsewhere as of now (You could say "well, get a job to finance your hobby"... haha, sorry, I'm just too lazy, for now). As for the rest of the debate, after it seemed to get a bit hostile ("My opinion is correct!" "No, my opinion is correct! Yours is stupid!" "No, you're stupid!!" not sure if that's what happened, but to me, it looked like it), I decided to step back and just read both sides objectively. After that, I guess the best points made (again, my opinion) are that it would do some good if the Worlds were more varied, like a Space World or a Techno World, and maybe they could include mechanics like altered gravity and wormholes.

If I'm paying 50 bucks for a game, it better damn well have more than multiplayer and a few added gimmicks. That's my main complaint.

SUPRISING BUMP! Amazingly enough, even with E3 just a few days from now . . . There will be a new Nintendo Direct on June 3rd June 3rd at 23:00 GMT. (like 22 hours and 10 minutes after this post) The #NintendoDirect focuses on the concept behind #WiiUwww.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/nintendo_direct_47764.htmlAlso saw this on NeoGAF, a quick twitter post deletion from NoA The gang's all here in LA. (Does the red bag have bombs or megatons to be dropped in it?)I have to admit, I never thought there would be one this close to E3, make me think the next ND must be like early August or later.

I swear that these Nintendo Direct's get announced in shorter notice each time. Still looking forward to this one all the same.

A randomly-announced Nintendo Direct just a few days before E3? Is that really a good idea?

That sign behind Reggie ("No stopping any time") is very fitting. Also, does anyone else but me think Triforce when looking at this pic? Reggie = Power! Miyamoto = Wisdom! Iwata = Courage! ;D

I can't see there being much exciting stuff at Nintendo Direct today. Probably just a preliminary thing to get fans hyped for E3, maybe a few minor 3DS and possibly even Wii games will be shown too just to get them out of the way and not have them clogging up the main event,
