Pic of the day. Tomorrow, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be released in Japan! The players in Japan had to wait a bit longer for their release, but then again, they did get the 3DS version first. We were glad to be able to release this game in the Americas just in time for Thanksgiving in the United States.
Pic of the day has continued since E3 2013, and I would like to bring this series to a close today. A total of 384 posts and roughly 500 screenshots have been posted, and there's even more screenshots if you count the ones I've posted for different regions.
The origins of pic of the day was sharing one picture a day of the game in development inside the company. It started out just as a small bonus for the staff.
However, once we started sharing pictures with the public, it was a much tougher process. We had to be more careful to choose appropriate pictures to post while keeping a consistant schedule regardless of how busy we got, all while some people only wanted new information from my posts.
It's nice to finally be able to get one weight off of my shoulders. But, we promised to create Mewtwo as a playable character, so I can't relax too much yet. I hope you'll look forward to Mewtwo joining the battle!

And so it ends! I was hoping he'd continue posting silly pictures, but 384 posts is more than enough.
Also thank you Leon and YL for posting these every day. I always went to these boards for the latest picture as the main site was missing the accompanied text and every other site was too cluttered. Made for some easy reading. Again, thanks!

Ah... My living schedule got completely messed up that I couldn't reliably post these. It's mostly Leon's work. I couldn't keep my Imgur album updated either, but I made that mostly for archival purpose so that you get all the searchable text in a single page.
Also, news time.
The Japanese game's out, and with that, the Japanese version of Palutena's Guidance. Some of them are quite different from the overseas one, and here's my findings:
I have yet to see any transcript, although I'd love to. I'm not going to type everything.
This is a rather obvious reference to Snake's codecs, even more so than the English language one.
"Pit, do you know about him?" "Of course, Lady Palutena! It's Mario!" "For you, Pit, he was your first partner in the fight against the Subspace Army." "But he's also a famous person with unparalled familiarity. There's probably no one who doesn't know Mario." "To be able to spar with such a star -- how time has changed for the better!!" "This could be a miraculous chance. With no regrets, go and get your wrists swinging free!"
By the way, this is how Snake's version went:
"Snake. Do you know about that man?" "Of course, Colonel. It's Mario." "Since Mario debuted in 1981, he gained popularity all over the world." "There's probably no one who doesn't know Mario. He's famous like that." "To be able to spar with such a star -- how time has changed for the better!!" "It's a miraculous chance. With no regrets, go and get your wrists swinging free!"
Almost a 1-to-1 copy there, barring the Japanese-specific personal tones not reflected here.
Also, "how time has changed for the better" may or may not be an indirect Fist of the North Star reference.
No reference to the Year of Luigi or Luigi wearing an L on his head.
"Hey, that's Luigi!" "That's the eternal number 2." "No no, you should start calling him the popular man in green instead!" "As number 2 of all these fighters, I think he's actually rather powerful." "Hmm. You're actually right." *snip* "He's got pronounced strenths and weaknesses! Bring it on, little brother!"
Viridi suggests that Peach willingly waits to be kidnapped.
Viridi mentions how Bowser has a tendency to become giant in later games. No "8-bit action movie" reference (it's just "movie's last scene"), though game console bitness is mostly a western thing -- not to mention they got it wrong later on; who actually knows that GameCube, Wii and Wii U are all 32-bit?
Viridi contemplates how there are no differentiation between male and female Yoshis, and Palutena point out that they're both male AND female simultaneously.
Palutena introduces Rosalina as a witch, but Viridi disagrees. Two things: this could be a references to the Cosmic Witch (Cosmic Spirit overseas), or they're just taking the term "majo" (magical woman) literally.
"That's the witch who lives in the Comet Observatory, Rosetta." "No no, if Rosetta is a witch, then you and Zelda are too!"
Where Pit would try to rename the Junior Clown Car, he stopped before embarassing himself in the Japanese version.
"A turtle (カメ) in a mecha (メカ)... No, forget about it"
Towards the end, they contemplate the Koopalings' origin (since they're not Bowser's children now).
"I wonder if they're born from eggs too?" "Well, they are turtles."
They talk about the difference between the Nasty Garlic and the ordinary ones. They also don't talk a lot about farts, only saving it for the last line.
"If he eats items, he'll have gas accumulated in his belly." "Be careful if he suddenly farts." "A goddess who says 'fart' is somehow... nice."
Palutena's responce to DK being naked is a bit different.
"Even though he's naked with just a necktie." (Ever heard of "hadaka apron"? No, don't look it up.) "Yeah, he's naked with just a necktie." "For him, it's because it's the only image he has. And if you say something weird, won't you get launched beyond the horizon?"
Pit's tendency to eat everything isn't referenced; he just comments that having edible ammunition is a scary thing.
Mr. Game & Watch
Slight difference in the last part.
"It's alright! The more powerful the foe is, the hotter I burn!" "Ooh, that's manly!" "That is, if I can take my weapons" "Ugh... I thought as much..."
One of the bigger variation, due to the fact that Viridi has a pose not present in other versions.
"Hump. You're not even close. You and Link are like the moon and a softshell turtle." "Look at that heroic face!" *faces back, hands on head* "Link-sama~♥" "Na- Nature...?" "It's a joke. The goddess of nature isn't interested in monkeys." "Humans aren't really bad, are they? I can introduce him to you when no one's around." "None of your business!"
Rather than scaring Pit, Palutena talks about making a Phantom for Pit as a thanks for his service.
"Don't worry about that. It's a thanks from me." "You're just going to take my gold!" "I'll accept hearts as payment, thank you."
Viridi joins the others in wondering aloud Sheik's identity, though in a joking way.
"Sheik's true identity -- just who could that be~" "Yeah, I really have no idea~" "The most puzzling of puzzles. That's the biggest mystery of the century~" (Niconico comment: said mystery was solved last century)
Depending on how you interpret the text, Palutena may or may not have said there are multiple Ganons. No Ganon canon joke. Palutena calls him the Pig King... MOTHER3 reference much?
"That evil-looking majin..." "That's Ganondorf. He can also become the Pig King Ganon." "No no, that's 'Evil King' Ganon." "He's turned Hyrule, where Zelda and Link are present, into ruins many times over." "But I couldn't get his past experience from Palutena Data Scan." "Lady Palutena, you have that kind of power?" "No. And?" "Ngah!" "Though all called Ganon, there are multiple types." "Just like how Zelda and Link refer to different people." "Anyway, pay attention to his unparalleled power." "And with that, take advantage of his weight."
Pit asks about his name more explicitly.
"I noticed that since the last time, but what is 'Toon'?" "That's short for cartoon, as in comic and animation."
Zero Suit Samus
Palutena simply Pit's "hurty-looking equipment" his divine weapons. "Palutena's Boot Camp" (パルテナブートキャンプ) is also just that. I'm a bit surprised to see the term "boot camp" in Japanese.
Pit's flight gets explained in detail.
"Is that me?" "Ah, yes. That is Pit, indeed. 100% pure Pit." "Lady Palutena, that's very calm of you." "Well, this has happened before. It's an everyday thing." "The mirror of truth..." "That said, when Black Pit came out of the mirror, he wasn't mirrored." "Ah, true. I wonder if it's because it'd be confusing to have the numbers on the back of the Underworld army mirrored?" "Huh? That's really it?" "No. And?" "Ngah!" "The real thing wouldn't lose to the fake. We'll see from practise who will win." "By the way, why can I keep using the Miracle of Flight?" "For the purpose of Smash, I gave you a short version of the Miracle for you to use at will." "You can use it whenever you like, but it looks more like extended multiple jumps than actual flight. It looks unnatural, so keep that in mind if you want to use it many times."
Also, Japanese typo found: 左右対称 (さゆうたいしょう, left-right symmetric) was written as 左右対象 (left-right target).
Palutena calls Smash a sport, where there is no real violence or anything big at stake.
Pit says he doesn't want to fight Palutena, so she should come at him at the "highest intensity".
Viridi suggests that Pit learns from the prince.
"Hey, that's the handsome prince!" "That's a silly, informal way to put it." "Sensei! I think one handsome guy is enough!" (I have no idea what this line is) "I have no time for that. How about you learn from Marth's mannerism?"
English-speaking players may quote Ike's full sentences, but it's his battle grunts that are funnier in Japan. Also, Viridi's refusal to reveal her age is just so adorable.
"Pit, I don't know how old you are, but you look like you have not grown at all." "Nature, you are the least qualified to say this!! Would YOU tell me how old are you!!" "さぁ～のぉ～♪ (Saa~ Noh~)" (I'm starting to understand why is she so popular in Japan...) "His side smash attack has high launch power, but there is also a weakness in that." "That's because he leaves himself wide open. Dodge that and fight back!!" "Ten! Kuu!" (Aether impression) "Nuhn!" (Up smash impression)
Like in the English version, Chrom finally loses it when the goddesses keep pressing his buttons.
"Even if you are to join, Chrom, you would feel like Ike" "Ugh..." "Your Aether doesn't inolve jumping, so that's not good for recovery!" "Leave me alone!"
And of course they're putting in a Sothe joke for this one.
"For the Last Trump Card, I will support Reflet with Double!" "With this sword, I will protect Reflet!" (Sothe said the same about Micaiah, who ends up stronger than him because Radiant Dawn is anything but balanced.) "The way you say it sounds cool, but don't you need a Smash Ball to show up?" "So, Reflet, get a Smash Ball! ...I'm counting on you."
The first part is completely different.
"D-dog?" "Dog and duck, grouped together and called Duck Hunt for some reason." "For whatever reason, the dog is carrying a hunting target on the back." "The duck carries a leek... wait no. What am I making such connection." "You can see just two of them, but they're actually a trio."
Mostly the same, except that the end is even more straightforward. No "same voice actress" jokes (Makiko Ohmoto voices both Kirby and Viridi), unfortunately.
"Then I can easily launch him." "But Pit, you don't have attacks with hugh launch power." "Well, it's okay if you can keep damaging him." "You and the pink ball, who's the stronger?" (Pink ball is actually one of the official nicknames of Kirby's)
Palutena has something to say about Dedede's unusual name. There's also no "What's a KO" joke, which I think is for the better since they're veteran fighters.
"Hey, it's King Dedede!" "Deh-deh-deh-deh-deh." "Lady Palutena, what did you just say?" "On top of being heavy, he is able to fly and his hammer has the hardest hit. "When he throws his spiky Gordos, don't think and just hit hit back." "If your returned Gordo can KO him, it counts as your point." "That's a bargain!! I'll definitely go for it!!" "In your case, Pit, perhaps it's easier to simply reflect them."
"Hey, it's Meta Knight!" "Behind that mask is a face almost the same as Kirby's. That's quite moe."
Pit makes no impressions beyond the first one from General Pepper. Star Fox quotes aren't anywhere as popular in Japan because they're more generic to begin with.
In place of saying Falco "sounds delicious", Pit comments that he's glad he has got some Kibi dango with him. Maybe he's contemplating feeding him -- this is yet another Momotaro joke.
He also doesn't freak out when hearing about Falco's power and fame across the galaxy.
No change for the most part.
"Ooh! Lizardon! It always looks so mighty." "With those mighty wings, it can't fly high!! Glide, it can neither!!" "Someone used to be like this. You forgot that, did you." "Hmmmmm, I don't remember that. Who could it be--?" "Hey, hey."
No change, although I like how Pit sounds more desparate in telling Viridi to halt her plan in recruiting Lucario.
The last part is a little bit different.
"When you see it starting to sleep, get your high-launch attacks ready." "I'll check the condition of my weapons, yeah."
Palutena thinks a ninja that eats slowly would feel fresh.
"Apply chilli pepper on your body may be surprisingly effective." "With sugh a long tongue, it probably can't taste things." "Well, a ninja that eats slowly would feel out of place. Isn't it good?"
In Japan, he's just "Robot" because other names would be too long or hard to read.
"Ah, that's Robot." "It feels lazy to call a robot just Robot." "But I think Robot is fine." "Let me make some names for him here!" "Hmm... Gahi-gahi-man!" (Just some robot-y sounds) "Hmmmm, no matter how I think about it, it feels a bit..." "Then, Jet Robolin Number 3!" "Where was this Number 3 from?" "Maybe Mister HVC-012." "...We should just simply stick to Robot, after all. Yeah?" "You can see his laser charge from the lampon his head." "Be careful when he shoots it when you least expect it."
PSI is pronounced as a single word as opposed to three letters. Pit's lines are also a bit different.
"Supernatural powers?! Such unscientific...!" "...Said the angel to the goddess?" "Ah, are you going to say we're the very representatives of unscientific beings?"
"Thanks for your help as always! Osu!"
Talks about the Villager's Japanese name.
"Ooh, that's a villager." "Murabito... that's ambiguous..." "That's a collective name for all those people." "Speaking of which, this name hides an interesting secret." "Oh oh. How so?" "Actually, in Smash, this is the first name that uses hiragana!!" (Young Link: "...") "Wh-what! I didn't know!!" "Haniwa-kun Rocket can be reflected. If you reflect it during recovery, it'll be funny."
Pikmin & Olimar / Pikmin & Alph
Palutena points out that the Pikmin are named by Olimar.
"Lady Palutena! Could that be..." "It appears that the Pikmin look like the Pikpik Carrots, and thus are named by Olimar as such." "So that's vegetable? Probably." "Sorry to interrupt, but let this Nature Ruler to explain each Pikmin!" "Red are strong!" "Yellow are easy to hit with and fly high!" "Blue are easily thrown!" "White latch!" "Purple are heavy and the strongest!" "How's that. Remember them all." "Blue are good for throwing, white are effective for latching..." "They don't attack, but there are also the Winged Pikmin." "Carrying many Pikmin is heavy for the Winged Pikmin, and that's the chance."
Wii Fit Trainer (female)
Even more wordplay there; and here's a reference to a Japanese children's show.
"There's this person in pale white..." "That's the Wii Fit Trainer. The so-called gymnastics lady." "Pit. How much exercise do you normally do?" "Hmm, no. I always move, so I don't think that's needed." "Huh. That's it? I feel silly just from hearing it." "You're always busy doing labourous errands for your goddess." "天の使いと書いて天使! (Ambassador of heaven, shortened to 'tenshi'!)" "天が使うと書いて天使! (Exploited by heaven, shortened to 'tenshi'!)" "Anyway, be careful of the Sun Salutation enhanced by Deep Breath."
Wii Fit Trainer (female)
Pit's... unhealthy obsession... with Palutena could be a reference to how both fans and official sources depict them at different points.
"There's this person in pale white..." "That's the Wii Fit Trainer. The so-called gymnastics man." "Pit, do you normally exercise?" "Hmm, well, yeah." "Oh. Could it be because I used you too harshly?" "No, don't say such thing as using me harshly. Working for Lady Palutena is my way of living." "Pit, the things you say sometimes is so cute." "Of course, I'm always at your service! I'll go on as long as I can!" "The abilities of the male Trainer is same as the female Trainer." "Therefore, the points of note are also the same. The end."
What else do you expect? Shulk quotes, of course!
"There's someone I haven't seen..." "That's Shulk. 18 years old, 171 cm." "That's a flamboyant sword he's holding..." "The sword the slashes Mechonis, the Monado." "穏やかじゃないですね。 (That's not calm.)" (One of Shulk's responses to quest NPCs) "With the Monado Arts, Shulk's strengths and flaws change. Like he may get better jumping power but lower his defence." "So he doesn't just get powered up, he gets weaknesses too." "He can use this to his advantage, like raising his launch power when the opponents have high damage." "But if you know his weaknesses, you can handle him easily too." "よかった、これで解決ですね。 (Alright, this way it's solved.)" (Shulk's response upon quest completion)
Pit thinks about softening Lucina up for real. Also, dear Nintendo of America, I give up on you.
"Here's a lady with similar fighting techniques as Marth." "That's Lucina." "She originally assumed Marth's name, so of course they're similar." "Eh? She took over someone's name? Isn't that fraud?" "No, she didn't do this to deceive people." "In a time when Marth has become a legend as the Hero-King, Lucina took his name to raise her army's morale..." "It could be thought of as a symbol of hope to save her own world, sinking to the depths of despair." "That sounds heavy." "But apparently, she also has a weird sense of humour." (Original: 笑いのツボがおかしい / Fun sense of humour) "Then this time, we should laugh as we go! A smiling face is the best!" "She doesn't give higher damage at the tip of the edge like Marth does." "She doesn't have high power, but she can attack consistently."
Here's the conversation that makes people speculate a KidIcarus sequel. Sounds much more dramatic than the English one.
"Here you are, Blapi!" "What's wrong with you, calling me Blapi!" "Where have you gone to after the battle with Hades?" "Black Pit is an officer in the Forces of Nature, and thus my subordinate." "Wha-" "What!?" "Goddess Palutena. We have fought together once, but I have not approved of you." "I've also got the Light Chariot and Eleca of the sparks. The battle is not over yet!" "The goddess of nature and I share interest. First off, as the pre-war battle, I'm going to send you flying!" "Your powers are similar. You can rely only on your skills!" "We'll fight again! Palutena, and Pit!"
Pit compares him to Kirby.
"There's this yellow guy... I don't think that's Kirby." "That's PAC-MAN." "Born in 1980, his history is deeper than even Mario's by one year." "Another veteran. This could be why he's always smiling." (Stealth Nyaruko-san reference? Just kidding.)
No change. But since it's Mega Man, here's the full translation anyway:
"A spiky Spin Attack? I never thought of it that way..."
Pit's final line was longer than the English one. The English version has his second-to-last line split into two.
"Yes. No trash-talking before I win!" "Pay clean and tight attention not to get KO'd!"
Viridi's comment on Mii Swordfighter being funny looking is in relation to the other weaponised fighters. Pit's response is also different.
"There are lots of realistic-looking fighters with weapons, but this one looks rather comical." "Even so, this fighter won't go soft on me, right?"
The conversation is more detailed in the Japanese version.
"There's a person with equipment like Rockman's." "You can also say it looks like Samus's equipment." "That's a shooting type Mii. This Mii carries an arm cannon in the backpack. It's heavy." "But with just that appearance, it looks like the cannon can shoot all sorts of things." "Do you knowhow does it operate?" "It appears that the arm cannon has triggers and motion switches on it." "Eh!? You don't say... I can determine the projectile type by looking at the shooter's pose!?" "That's revolutionary! We should patent that." "...Since when did the goddess of nature become the goddess of commerce?"
Thanks, YL! That was real interesting! I'm curious how they'd do Samus' message, though. I doubt it'd be the same as the English version. Calling a character by the game's title just seems like a Western thing.
Thanks, YL! That was real interesting! I'm curious how they'd do Samus' message, though. I doubt it'd be the same as the English version. Calling a character by the game's title just seems like a Western thing.
But it really is just that (well, Pit's reply differed a bit, so there's that). I was surprised as well.
"Oh, there's Metroid." "Samus isn't 'Metroid'!" "Link isn't 'Zelda'." "And Pit isn't 'Palutena'." (Refers to the Japanese title "Light Myth: Palutena's Mirror") "Ahh. I'm feeling some sympathy here." "Anyway, Samus's Charged Shot can be reflected by the Guardian Orbitar." "It's effective against projectiles, but using it too much will make you easy to read." "So it's better to have a habit of dodging and returning fire."
Post by nocturnal YL on Dec 7, 2014 12:23:23 GMT -5
I guess while calling character's names by game titles isn't as common in Japan, the joke is so well-known that they went with it anyway. Melee's website had a similar joke when talking about the trophies.
Here's yet another new finding: a new song apparently absent from the overseas version.
That's Ashley's Song Ver. 2. I have no idea why is it Japan-only or if it will be added in a future patch. Now with Wario cleared, G&W (come on, they can't put in Gallery music?) and Sonic remain the only series without new music.
I don't know where to put this... but thought it is probably on topic here...
I was thinking about maybe it would be cool if there is a new battle type in addition to Time, Stock, and Coin battles... I call it Boost battles.
Boost battles are like Coin battles except random stat boosts from Smash Run appear instead of coins. Stat boosts come in different sizes but their sizes depend on how light or how hard the opponents were hit. Characters would run faster, jump higher, hit harder, etc. during the match and their stats would decrease by half when they get KO'd.
This is an idea. This thread is for sharing what we know already exist in the games.
So where is the appropriate thread for me to post it? I don't think there are threads about Smash ideas... I only see dream threads for characters, items, Assist Trophies, Pokeballs, and stages. What I am suggesting does not fall in any of these categories as it is just a battle type. Shouldn't there be a new dream thread for modes, menus, stadium, etc.?
Nester the Lark: Hello, NinDB world! Post your shouts here! (But be careful not to wake the neighbors. )

nocturnal YL: Guys, guys! I can't believe what I found in Zelda 1! The game features an Elimination Mode that for some reason not many talked about! I wonder if it's fun? (Don't actually try it.)

nocturnal YL: Hey, I can edit shoutbox posts! This is already better than Twitter!
Jul 23, 2020 8:33:38 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: It seems like Cadence of Hyrule should be more popular than it is. Are people put off by the rhythm aspect? Or the randomly-generated maps?
Jul 24, 2020 14:01:59 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: ↑ Might warrant its own thread, but I think mixing rhythm and other genres usually resuls in gameplay too difficult for many. I can't handle it well either, judging from my scores in Dedede's Drum Dash.
Jul 24, 2020 22:46:56 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: ↑ For me personally, it simply hasn't been considered. It's a download-only game (until now) from a series I'm unfamiliar with and didn't feel like trying out.
Jul 24, 2020 23:02:40 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: Ironically, I did create a thread for Cadence of Hyrule, but then deleted it thinking there wouldn't be any discussion on it. Maybe I'll go ahead and make a new one.

Shrikeswind: Something to bear in mind about the shoutbox if you’re not already aware: It doesn’t show up on the mobile version of the forums. This shouldn’t be a major problem, but it can make it difficult to get into discussions for mobile visitors.
Jul 26, 2020 1:40:18 GMT -5
Shrikeswind: Also the more obvious character limit issues, and the format not really being conducive to longer-term discussion. It’s useful but limited; threads definitely still have their place.

Shrikeswind: (Honestly, Proboards mobile is pretty bad in general, but...)
Jul 26, 2020 1:46:07 GMT -5

Shrikeswind: I’m aware. I’m typing this from my phone. I’m just pointing out that, for people who aren’t aware or who may be casually checking in on their phone, the shoutbox won’t be visible on
Jul 26, 2020 22:04:05 GMT -5
Shrikeswind: Is there a Discord for NinDB, by the way? It’s very popular with them there young’ns these days, so it might help activity.
Jul 26, 2020 22:07:47 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: There is no NinDB Discord. There was a brief discussion of it a few years ago, but nothing ultimately came of it. I rarely use Discord, myself.
Jul 27, 2020 8:58:28 GMT -5
Shrikeswind: Hm. Seems like it might be a good idea if activity picks up. Not to be a pessimist but I do have my doubts that'll happen though.

Shrikeswind: Okay not a Nintendo topic but I kinda need to talk about this because I just learned it and it's a thing so bleh.

Shrikeswind: You remember Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame, right? So apparently, 5 year old me was incapable of discerning male and female in non-humans, because *apparently* there's a female gargoyle, and the goat's a boy.
