I'm just going to throw this one out there: I betcha Sonic's going to get some moves revamped as Pit did, with Color's Wisp powers replacing some of his more lackluster Special moveset. If anything, I say this partially because Megaman's Recovery seems to act way too similar to Sonic's Spring recovery, down to the animation of the object after it's used and partially because those Wisp powers had their birth on Nintendo consoles.
This is all assuming that Sonic's still in the game. But I doubt they gave him the shaft, if anything, I see Chrom butting Ike out.

^ Third-parties are the least stable characters, I'd say!
By the way, Wii U owners, remember that Sakurai will be sharing photos in the Super Smash Bros. Miiverse community... I wonder if they will be uploaded to the official site, too.

Depending on which game comes out first, Sonic: Lost World could even have some influence, here! Although I would be more interested in the use of Wisps. I remember seeing somewhere that Mr. Game & Watch had, somehow, been confirmed to appear in the roster by IGN. I don't personally care to dig it up, but it came up in a discussion of whether he could be removed and replaced by the Villager, in terms of play style. I think it seems plausible, but that (obviously) nothing can be said for sure at this point. I'm thoroughly looking forward to kicking ass with the Wii Fit Trainer, so the roster already looks fine to me, anyways!

The official's site's daily image has updated. (This image should change daily) I think there'll be people out there in the Internet who archive these images, so there's not worries for that.

Yeah, considering the exclusive partnership deal Nintendo have with Sega for the Sonic games right now and the fact that they're still churning out Mario & Sonic games, it seems a safe bet Sonic will be back for this game.

When kids, for more than one year from now, say stupid things like "Sonic won't be in Smash because Mega Man is using his old Up + B"... I'm prepared to be stoic and remember that Sakurai is kiddy and does stupid things. (Or clones)

Some other tidbits that have popped up today: IGN interview with Masahiro Sakurai: "Just because the game is being cooperatively developed with Namco Bandai involved, that doesn’t at all mean that they’d be given any special consideration for having characters in the game. Smash Bros. can still be considered as an all-star collection of Nintendo characters. Just like with Mega Man or any other third-party character, it would have to be a very special situation. Adding third-party characters should be considered a very special case. In the last game, when we added Sonic and Snake, there were lots of different hoops to jump through as far as getting approvals and making sure all the parties involved were happy with the way things went. You can consider it a very special circumstance for that to happen. Even in cases like adding Pokemon characters, there are a lot of parties involved and there’s a lot of wrangling. It’s much tougher than people can imagine. I know lots of people have requests and their own ideas about third-party characters that would work, but I want people to understand that adding a third-party character like Mega Man is a very special situation." "My inquiry about Namco Bandai characters did lead Sakurai to ask me a question in return - if I had to pick one character, which Namco Bandai character would I want in Super Smash Bros.? The answer seemed obvious to me - the original arcade version of Pac-Man. Sakurai then asked me what a Final Smash might look like for that, and we started to discuss how how Pac-Man could become super-powered, and chase other characters around a stage, attempting to eat them. It was a surreal discussion to say the least, but shows that Sakurai is always contemplating what else he might add to his projects, packing them full of as much content as possible." Joystiq confirmed no cross-platform play, but that the two games can share "customization" in some way (this does not mean alt. costumes!). That suggests the characters will be able to jump back and forth between versions somehow; custom movesets, maybe (my speculation, not anything based in fact). You can multiple air cancel again. The roster for both games is going to be determined by the 3DS version's limits. That doesn't mean that we have a smaller roster or that characters are getting cut; it just means that Sakurai is really trying to max out both games based on the 3DS. Also, much like with the Namco Bandai comemnts above, Sakurai reiterates that third party characters are "special" and will not be excessive. Lastly, Sakurai is aiming for a balance between Melee and Brawl's gameplay for SBB4 gameplay-wise.

I remember, back in the days where Brawl speculation was at its most heated, we would frequently fall back on the "what could character x do in a fight" excuse when discussing the roster.
Seeing the Villager weaponize his inventory system has made me realize that a supposed lack of offensive attacks shouldn't ever apply to this scenario. Ever. So long as a character has some sort of history to draw from, it'll be made to work.
I am legit digging the newcomers. Megaman should have been in Brawl to begin with so it's great seeing him here; Wii Fit Trainer is a surprise, but she looks fun to play as and I can always appreciate another woman amongst the roster; and Villager is another one that's been a long time in coming, I feel. As for the rest of the roster? Well, I suspect anybody that's been in at least two Smash Bros. games gets a pass, and of Brawl's newcomers, Lucario, Snake and Sonic feel like the most disposable. The former due to representing the 4th Generation (much like Pichu in Melee), a role that will likely be filled by Newtwo, and the latter pair due to red tape. We'll see, though.
I've said it tons of times in the past, though, DLC could remedy all of these issues, so fingers crossed Sakurai takes advantage of it.

I'd throw Ike in as well. Like Roy before him, I expect to see him replaced with a contemporary representative whilst Marth stays out of legacy.

On the topic of Mega Man. - Dude oh my God I cannot wait.
- I'm not sure if Rush is his Up+B. At 0:35 in his trailer he does a Shoryuken.
- His motions are spot-on renderings of his sprite motions and that's awesome.
- I like how he's teetering on the edge of the uncanny valley. He actually seems robotic.

I think you're forgetting R.O.B., here. In my opinion, there's no way he's coming back. I never enjoyed fighting as him, personally, so I wouldn't miss him if someone new takes his space. The Sega-Nintendo deal probably cuts a lot of red tape that would otherwise get in the way of adding Sonic, so I definitely see him coming back. In the case of Snake, since it was a devtime-related issue that kept him out of Melee, not red tape, I wouldn't say there's too much in his way, either. One thing I'd like to see is a continuation of what Brawl did to de-clonify the clone characters. Brawl did a bit of work in setting the clones apart a bit, but it also added another one: Wolf. I'd personally rather see the dev team leave him out.

Personally, I'd like to see Snake gone. What right does a PlayStation devotee have in asking for his creation to be in Smash Bros? Two or three remakes on Nintendo platforms? Feh.
I guess we can pretty safely say that Lucario and Ike will be replaced. (I'd want Marth to be replaced as well. Just throw in two characters from the same game.) Perhaps Toon Link as well. Not so sure about characters that will go without replacement (like Dr. Mario) though, since the SSB team want to work in as many elements as possible.
Mega Man's Shoruyken might very well be his Smash Up A. It doesn't gain him much elevation, and instead looks like Mario's Neutral Up A.
Outside of Link and Toon Link, the "clones" in Brawl aren't really that clone-like. They might share special moves, but their normal attacks are all different. They should instead replace their special moves, or at least, Final Smash moves. No more Landmaster from Falco, seriously.
I'm positive that this game will end up good, if anything. It has a very different background than Brawl, and this time around they look like they really are tryng to draw elements from the actual games. No more vague stage entries like Lylat Cruise or Castle Siege (for now), and they're more willing to acknowledge the characters' original game worlds.
Brawl (and Subspace) gave me a feeling that they were much more knowledgeable in Mother and Kirby than, say, Wario or Fire Emblem (at least they still got Snake's codec with the latter right). You can tell they they aren't really trying to be ignorant to those series, but lack of knowledge? Yessss.
SSB for 3DS and Wii U did this much better (so far). They introduced characters by showing things from their own world (the AC Village, Mega Man's arsenal), and all non-SSB stages shown so far can be traced back to individual games. From what little we've seen, it appears that music from those games would come back as well. Hopefully we won't get silliness like Port Town Aero Dive not getting its own BGM.

I don't think we can 'safely' say anything. Personally, I think the backlash from the removal of Mewtwo (who wasn't particularly liked in Melee), and Roy (who was a clone character, and one with no 'notability') will make Sakurai think twice about removing anybody at all. I'm not saying some won't be, but I doubt Sakurai walked into his office on day one and went 'OK, quick, lets delete all traces of Lucario and Ike, they're old news".
Snake better stay. I don't care if he's more closely associated with Playstation, he's a gaming icon with a unique moveset, is fun to play, and adds something different to the roster. But then, I personally don't mind them loading up on Third Party characters, and it would appear Sakurai doesn't share this sentiment, so who cares what I think?
...Speaking of 'people's opinions nobody cares about', ROB is getting removed for sure, because some guy on a forum doesn't like playing as him? Ok, sounds legit.
