Has it ever been mentioned whether the DLC costumes cost anything, or will they be free? And if they're free, why not just put them on the disk?

As of now the DLC has only been announced for Japan. But they way it works is that everyone who buys a physical disk gets the Link costumes, everyone who buys the Premium Box edition and higher also gets the Zelda costumes, and finally everyone who buys the Treasure Box edition gets a set of costumes based on the Triforce of Power.

Um, spoilers for those who haven't watched the Direct? New character vid: HERESpoiler(?): It's Ganondorf. I like his new design. He reminds me of Skrimir - must be the hair.I like how they used all those stuff from the past games. Chain Chomp is outright unexpected. Don't think I'm getting it (for now), though, since it's still mainly about those three 3D Zeldas. I prefer the 2D ones myself for both story and gameplay reasons. Maybe I will later.

It was also confirmed that Zant, Ghirahim, and Cia will be playable.
And we now have confirmation for how DLC will work in NA. For Ganondorf, both his OoT and TP will be free for those who register the game on Club Nintendo by October 23. The other costumes will be retail exclusive.

Euro direct confirms that Euro limited edition players can wrap it and start playing (and also stay warm) with Link's scarf. Unfortunately, we still got clock blocked like NA and didn't get that fancy Triforce clock.

A little off-topic, but some of you might appreciate this. Nintendo has given an official word about Sheik's gender (aside from referring to her with feminine pronouns for years), courtesy of Bill Trinen: "The definitive answer is that Sheik is a woman — simply Zelda in a different outfit." ( Source) I think the Sheik in Hyrule Warriors looks decidedly feminine anyway.

Sheik also looked hella feminine in Brawl. I mean, seeing how basically everybody knows who Sheik really is there's not much of a point hiding/changing her gender now is there?

I thought it was a little odd/funny how Yosuke Hayashi shied away from mentioning Shiek's true identity in the Nintendo Direct. Nintendo stopped playing coy with Samus's gender when Prime/Fusion came out, eight years after Super Metroid. Ocarina of Time is now 16 years old. It's not a spoiler anymore.

I just don't see why Sheik being female is controversial. History is full of women who disguised themselves as men for a variety of reasons.

I just don't see why Sheik being female is controversial. History is full of women who disguised themselves as men for a variety of reasons. The same reason Birdo's sex is controversial: As a TS/TV character (a transvestite, in Sheik's case, hence "TV,") Sheik does not fit into a binary understanding of gender. People try to peg these characters one way or the other, and when two people's answers don't align...

Birdos are a species.
Current Birdo is a female.
Birdetta, the Birdo who was enslaved by Wart, is TS.
Problem solved.

Kriven you are so wrong it's not even funny.Birdo's always been a dude in drag in Japan. It's his entire thing. NoA has attempted to hide it at various points, but these days they don't really do that anymore. Birdo's a dude. Or if you wanna be vague about it, a "creature of indeterminate gender" as his Brawl trophy posits. And what the hell's this stuff about Birdo being "enslaved" by Wart? He was a willing minion! Hell, in BS Super Mario USA Power Challenge, the three Birdos all take great delight in carrying out evil schemes (and are all voiced by known drag queens, two of which are still working today!). Also, there isn't a character named "Birdetta". That was a localization of the line "He thinks he is a girl and would rather be called 'Cathy.'" And Shrike, how the hell is that even the same thing? Sheik is a girl disguising herself as a man to hide her identity, not a transperson! It's a trope that goes back as far as the tale of Hua Mulan, so it's no surprise a mythical series like Zelda would use it. There shouldn't be anything "controversial" about it.

How the hell is that even the same thing? Ooh! I know this one! It's "Because people are ignorant assbags!" No, seriously. Because "people are ignorant assbags," the flame wars become an absolute inferno every time it comes up because they don't consider the details as relevant, no matter what side they're on. Basically, look at what people call Birdo and Sheik and you'll see the stance people have on them. There's three. If Birdo's a he and Sheik's a she, it means "I'm only looking at physical sex." If Birdo's a she and Sheik's a he, it means "I don't care what the reason is because justice." If both are shes, it means "I recognize reason as being as important as result." By the way, this is something I can debate you into the dirt on. LGBT issues are something I keep up on.
