I just don't think the pink/azure costume is a Mario Bros. reference. Hell, after looking at allthearcadeflyers and even the marquee art I'm doubting more and more that the picture on the Famicom and e-Reader package was intended to be actually be pink and azure.
And I really don't see how such a reference is more obvious than OVA Luigi.
Regardless of whether it was meant to be those colours... those are the colours it is. You can go extract them yourself if you think I tampered with them or something. It's not a result of the image being washed out, because fading red doesn't add blue to it, and all the images have red on them somewhere else to compare. The Mario Bros. NES art features Mario in exactly the same colours as this palette. It could be a coincidence, sure, but so could almost ANY of these palettes.
And I'd say it's more obvious than OVA Luigi for two reasons. First, because the NES Mario colours are actually the same, whereas the Luigi ones are a lot greener (on both colours) than they actually were in the OVA. And second, the NES Mario Bros. art is an internal asset that's been used for at least three releases. Sakurai would likely come across it in the office if he was going through their archives. The Mario OVA was produced outside of Nintendo, it's unlikely they'd have any art assets for it lying around. But knowing Sakurai, I wouldn't be surprised if he came across it online and decided to reference it. He'd just have to go further to find it.
But like I said.. both could be coincidences. What makes you think he wouldn't reference it?

Alright, so having played the game for a while now... I'm pretty sure OVA Luigi palette isn't intentional.
That's shirt's a clear lime green, not yellow.
Also just noticed the list has Mario's green palette listed as a confirmed reference to NES art Luigi, but it's not the same as it. It's similar, but it's actually just made up of the opposites of Mario's usual colours. Only the hat colour actually matches NES Luigi.
Still 100% convinced about cyan Mario, though. That shit is identical.

Should we use a different thread for interesting stage references? Besides Pac-Pix, I spotted this in the PictoChat 2 stage. Another reference is to the WarioWare blowing microgames; I'll post a pic later.

Hearing about your escapades rocks my soul! It sure does! Click! ...... ......
I won't lie: the Yellow Fur skin for DK makes me think of the Golden Oozaru from DragonBall GT
A few possibilities that come to mind with the palette swaps (that are more viable than "Golden Oozaru") would have to be:
Blue Bowser: Based off Dark Bowser, from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story Black Bowser: Based off Morton Jr.
White Donkey Kong: Super Kong from DKCR Pink Donkey Kong: Pink DK Jr. from DK Jr. Math
Yellow Link: Pipit from LoZ: Skyward Sword
Green Zelda: Zelda's Palette when beating the original LoZ without any rings Blue Zelda: Zelda's Palette when beating the original LoZ with just the blue ring
Yellow Ike: Greil/Gawain Red Ike: Zelgius? The external part of the cape doesn't match, though... White/Blue Ike: Sigurd? Again, the cape doesn't fully match up, this time the interior Green Ike: I'd say this is based off the Ally Unit's coloration from the series, either that, or Geoffrey Black Ike: I've heard Black Knight, but I can't see it Silver/Blue Ike: Chrom
Orange Kirby: Orange Spray Paint from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror Black/Yellow Kirby: Maskless Metaknight
Pink Metaknight: Kirby Dark Pink Metaknight: Galacta Knight Grey Metaknight: Dark Metaknight from Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
Red Falco: StarFox Assault Falco
Red's Cap Pikachu: Red Green Bandana Pikachu: Brendan's Bandana (Emerald) Blue Goggles Pikachu: Pichu's Goggles from Melee Gold's Cap Pikachu: Gold Choice Band Pikachu: Choice Band Red Cap w/Sunglasses Pikachu: Calem's default cap
Red Charizard: Charmeleon Yellow Charizard: Charmander and Charmeleon's Shinies Purple Charizard: its Shiny from Gen II (didn't know about this one myself)
Leaf's Hat Jigglypuff: Leaf's Hat from Pokemon FR/LG Ribbon Jigglypuff: Fairy Tale Trainer's Ribbon from Pokemon X/Y Nurse Cap Jigglypuff: Pokemon X/Y's Nurse Joy Caps
Pink Greninja: Lickitung Black Greninja: Shiny Dark Purple Greninja: Shadow Greninja?
Red & Black R.O.B.: Virtual Boy
White Ness: Fuel from Mother 3
Green Alph: Charlie (Pikmin 3) Pink Alph: Brittney (Pikmin 3)
nocturnal YL: According to Nintendo's IR calendar, they're going to release their financial information up to December 2020 on 1 Feb. Switch sales (68.30 mil at Sep 2020) may very well surpass that of the 3DS (75.94 mil), but how will it compare to the GBA (81.51 mil)?
Jan 31, 2021 12:10:02 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: It's closer to the GBA sales than I thought. Switch hardware sales up to December 2020 is 79.87 mil, while I expected about 78 mil.
Feb 1, 2021 8:07:53 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: Also, while they stopped counting 3DS and Wii U hardware sales, software went up from 385.12 mil to 385.85 mil and 103.27 mil to 103.31 mil. Switch software sales went from 456.49 mil to 532.34 mil, surpassing that of NES and Game Boy.

nocturnal YL: So now that I have a capture device, I've been looking at my games and tried to figure out the resolution and frame rate they run at. Trials Rising is 540p30, Project DIVA Mega Mix has the UI at 720p60 and the simpler, single-singer PVs run at 540p60…?
Feb 6, 2021 11:42:34 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: All the Atelier games I've seen so far (Arland 1-4) run at 1080p30, which is a bit surprising as I expected a lower resolution for Lulua. Void Terrarium and Puyo Puyo Tetris 1 and 2 all run at 1080p60. PPT1 also ran at 1080p60 on Wii U, so no surprise.
Feb 6, 2021 11:45:41 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: ↑ In Atelier Lulua, the system UI and even some parts with 3D models (like the synthesis screen) run at full 1080p at 60 fps. That's a huge leap from the previous two games in the series. World map runs at 30 fps though, despite not being intensive.
Feb 8, 2021 11:13:44 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: Rune Factory 4 Special runs at 720p60. Fire Emblem Three Houses is a weird case; it looks like 900p30 to me, but because of the way the edge of the models are drawn, the graphics end up looking very ugly.

Nester the Lark: I've been doing the same thing I do every time I consider getting Smash Ultimate: playing Smash for Wii U. It turns out there are still plenty of people playing it online. Makes me curious about Splatoon 1.
Feb 20, 2021 10:08:42 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: The online also worked better than I remember. Maybe because there are fewer people...?

Nester the Lark: My skill curve in Smash Bros seems to be the opposite of other games: the more I play, the worse I get.
Feb 23, 2021 17:28:27 GMT -5
Nester the Lark: TIL I had not yet unlocked all the stages in Smash for Wii U. Just unlocked the last one today, six years after getting the game.

Nester the Lark: If you want a new perspective on your own Mario Maker levels, just wait more than three years before playing them again.

nocturnal YL: This kind of reminds me of modern 3D printing, where the software needs to formulate the steps for replicating the object rather than just going in a simple 2D matrix manner as in inkjet printing. Nice video.

Evie the Mother Hen ❤✿: From the looks of it we could create a Pokémon Family ROM hack, FE Family, etc.; but if the number of stiching points was changed from the original design you'd need to fix that with more hacking.
