As we know, in a few years, Nintendo GameCube will be followed by Nintendo Revolution, and the Xbox 360 and the PS3 will come onto the scene, looking better than their ugly predecessors. Here's what might cause a shift in the two powers...
1. The MTV Launch...Xbox 360 took a wrong turn from the start and advertised with celebrities. Families ignored it. Those of us without extended cable or satelitte missed it. PS3 took advantage and made the PS3 more powerful than the Xbox 360.
2. PlayStation loses GTA exclusively...San Andreas is coming to Xbox.
Will these events propel Nintendo to the top it hasn't enjoyed since 1991, or will Nintendo go down faster than Atari?

Well, Nintendo's latest drive is to get third parties back on board - trying to convince all of their close friends (Namco, Capcom and the like) to release all of their games on the Revolution as well as rivals. They even went so far as to suggest they'd like a GTA on Revolution.
If it works then Nintendo could well be onto a winner. It's always been sad to read review after review in multiformat magazines that just say "PS2 XBOX PC" and leave out Gamecube. Sometimes it's just stupid... why weren't Kingdom Hearts and Lego Star Wars ported to Cube? Surely that's just stupid.

Playstation lost GTA exclusivety (doubt thats a word) and while ago, but Rockstar will still go for the consoles where the believe they will get the most sales - and, at this point, Nintendo still hasn't convinced them (or anyone) that the Rev will do any better than the Cube.
And, despite being handled terribly (apparently, I didn't see it), the MTV launch was actually a good idea, since it is helping it appeal to the "casual" teenage market who are most likely to buy their console because they were told to (whether thats by friends, ads, etc).
So, honestly, I don't think there are any signs Ninty will reach the top. Of course, it all depends on the Revolution - if it something truely awesome that we will all realise we can't live without, then it'll zoom to the top.... but if it isn't, then Ninty might even drop further.
Who knows?

Innovation have always been Nintendo strongest point, so there's nothing to worry about(maybe ).

Heres how I see it. XBox 360-There going to lose. Hands down. It is incrediply weak and has no good games. Also Microsoft thinks their going to get a billion gamers with X-Box live.(heres the funny part). They used the example of Valocity Girl. She hardly plays video games but "with X-Box live" she'll be able to design shirts, stickers, and courses to sell online. A billion games right .Once the Ps3 And revolution come out they'll take the market. PS3-They'll do much better then Microsoft but nintendo has the edge. Sony is just making it a multi-media platform and nothing else. It can holk to other electronics(Ipod for example). They focused a little on the games but its all about the system. If they think like that, they'll lose. Revolution-The winner. Its games that sell a consel but sony and Microsoft see it as the other way around and witch will kill them. At nintendo's press confence all they talked about was the games. The bigest kicker is the abillity to download Nes,SNES and N64 games. This will be the reason why people buy it. Also with the gamecube it didn't have a traditional Mario ga,e at Launch witch hurt it. But now, Mario,Metroid,Super Smash Bros.FF:CC,WarioWare,Kid Icuras,Golden Sun. All of which will be launch titles ,if not close after. Theres are all big selllers and very anticipated. These will sell more them some stupid racing game on the PS3. And since its revolutionary, it adds a new level to game play(which is why WarioWare is there). Conclusion. Nintendo is going down the right path. Look at the DS vs The PSP. DS is more about games where the PSP is multimedia. Which one sells better. This is whats ging to happen to Sony and Microsoft. It will alienate the people who would buy the system as well as most people have played an old nintendo game and would want to download them on the Revolution.

The only problem is that Nintendo just doesn't have the casual appeal of others. Non-Geeks don't care about innovation, they'd be perfectly fine with playing the same games over and over again (that's why EA is popular), and they don't care about downloading older games. Nintendo also doesn't have the same kind of money to finance an absolute marketing blitz. Plus, most of Nintendo's games aren't very popular mainstream-wise, either (see the Paper Mario/Game Informer debacle). But Nintendo can't stop being Nintendo. They are going to need some serious 3rd-party assistance, but even if they get it I don't see them winning.

This concel generation 3rd party wont help. It takes 6 weeks to make a character modle so the smaller developers will be shuned. First party is needed, they have the resorses and staff to make the games. And since nintendo is a good first party devoloper they'll make alot fast. Also nintendo allready has Bandi,Namco,Capcom, and Sega on Board. Also Nintendo games are the kind of games that appel to casual gamers. Also Nintendo's system will be cheaper. So in the end I think Microsoft and Sony will alienate player. Also Sony and Microsoft have a budget for there game production and Nintendo is the most profitable company.

Woah. Take of those indigo-colour glasses for a minute... do you really think Joe Six-tooth (where'd you get another tooth?) is going to care about games that are "revolutionary", when the current games work fine? Hey, I know that if I wasn't such a Nintendo nerd I would think they were crazy for trying to change things (hell, I still do). I doubt it.
In conlcusion, it all depends on what the Revolution is. If its something great, then you may be right. If its not, then I doubt you will be.
(of course, we can all have our own opinion, I just think that you may be thinking less with your brain and more with gameboy.)

I think/hope Xbox 360 WILL fail and we could all giggle at the rise and fall of Xbox.

It may well be the opinion that Nintendo's innovative streak is odd to long-term gamers, but the DS has already taken off bigtime with non-gamers. Nintendo isn't trying to attract the same market as Sony and Microsoft any more... they're after everyone else... your parents, your girlfriend...
And that's one hell of a market opportunity.
Whether the plan will work in the long-term has yet to be seen... but Nintendo has also got us in mind... the Nintendo gamer. Oddly, we seem to be the most dedicated of all the other console maker fans. They keep us in the loop, recruit from the markets missed by Sony and Microsoft, and they could regain an impressive market share.
Gaming is about to become a lot more mainstream...

So Nintendo is trying to attract the very people who attempted to rip the NES controller out of our hands 17 years ago?

My girlfriend loves my DS... she wants Animal Crossing and Nintendogs... my family loves gaming as well - my sister and brother are huge Nintendo fans, and my NES was handed down from my NAN! My parents were just as eager to see my DS as I was

That's where I got Yoot Tower.

Fryguy... if only my family were into video games as well... Ah well. ;D And yeah, it looks like Nintendo is trying to draw in a chunk of the public who haven't looked at video games since they were a novelty back in the NES days - very good move IMO, and one that could increase their market share dramatically! ;D

Hello! New guy, here! Been lurking around the last few days. Hope you don't mind me joining the conversation. And yeah, it looks like Nintendo is trying to draw in a chunk of the public who haven't looked at video games since they were a novelty back in the NES days - very good move IMO, and one that could increase their market share dramatically! ;D I have to wonder if anyone really knows what casual or non-gamers really want. Just the other day, I was reading a mainstream news article slamming Nintendo's E3 showing and philosophy. The author basically said that casual gamers don't care about innovation, they only like pretty graphics and lots of power. On the other hand, I've also read articles that say people who don't usually play games at all have been picking up the DS. (Particularly in Japan with Nintendogs.) So maybe Nintendo's plan is working after all. As for people being drawn in by the novelty of gaming (as it was back in the late 80's), the purpose of the old NES ROB was to be a gimmick to draw people back to video games after the crash. Wouldn't it be funny if the hook for the Revolution was a ROB 2.0? I know. I'm just imagining things.
